im not saying replace showers with baths but ive been getting in the bath for the last few days after work and just chilling, smoking some weed and listening to podcasts or watching youtube. i wash myself as well and it feels way less rushed than when im showering. if you have a bath tub i recommend it. im in the tub as i type this

For at least 30 years, the National Weather Service, or NWS, had been providing time- and labor-intensive manual translations into Spanish. Researchers have found that even delayed translations have contributed to missed evacuations, injuries, and preventable deaths. These kinds of tragedies prompted efforts to improve the speed and scope of translating weather alerts at local, state, and national levels

. The AI translating company Lilt was behind one of them. By the end of 2023, the agency had rolled out a product using Lilt’s artificial intelligence software to automate translations of weather forecasts and warnings in Spanish and Chinese.

Since then, the service also added automatic translations into Vietnamese, French, and Samoan.

And now those alerts are gone. The NWS has indefinitely suspended its automated language translations because its contract with Lilt has lapsed, according to an April 1 administrative message issued by the agency. The sudden change has left experts concerned for the nearly 71 million people in the U.S. who speak a language other than English at home. As climate change supercharges calamities like hurricanes, heat waves, and floods, the stakes have never been higher — or deadlier.

“Because these translations are no longer available, communities who do not understand English are significantly less safe and less aware of the hazardous weather that might be happening in their area,” said a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration employee familiar with the translation project, whom Grist granted anonymity to protect them from retaliation.

Man I love being forced into technology that isn't better than the old thing and solves no problem (rather creating new ones) for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses because everyone was told this is the cool new thing so eat up piggies or FOMO.

Call me old (I'm not), call me a Luddite (I'm not), I don't care. You're wrong.

Sometimes new things being pushed by the market aren't the next leap in technology. Sometimes they are shit or pointless and should be abandoned, like 3D TVs. NEW DOESN'T ALWAYS EQUAL PROGRESS.

I feel the same about AI or touch screens being bundled into everything. Instead of the products they infect becoming better, they simply waste processing power that could have make the product perform better at the job it was originally designed to do.

A good example of this is when I once house sitted for a wealthy person. Their stovetop was all touch controlled. You want to know what doesn't work well with touch controls? Heat and water. What do kitchens and cooking on stove tops involve a lot of? FUCKING HEAT AND WATER.

So here I am cooking, shit, waters coming to boil. Shit, a tiny droplet of boiling landed on the touch controls and it thinks it's a finger. Shit, it thinks the finger is turning the temperature to max. Shit, it's not responding to my actual finger now until I wipe the water off. Shit, the pasta is now starting to overcook. I could just turn the element off, but shit, the off button is also touch operated. I how have remove the pot off the element. Wipe the control. Wait for it to cool. Hold my finger on the touch controls to readjust it to how I want. And turn this fucking thing off. It's all so slow. Why do this when a physical dial is so much cheaper and gives you instant control over the temperature with none of these problems?

Fuck it. Roast me for complaining about this. You know I'm right.

The annoying thing is there is a lot of cool things we could be developing, I actually like the progress of technology when it's done right. But the problem is it's all being developed with impressing the market in mind, not for actually making things better.

something i see often (not on hexbear mashallah) is people accusing trump of being a “fake billionaire”, then creating this mythical “good billionaire” in their head. these people say all these rich pieces of shit we see flaunting their wealth are actually “fake rich people” and that “REAL rich people” are humble, don’t buy overly luxurious brands, etc etc. and im not even sorry saying this but how fucking stupid do you have to be to believe that? yeah its actually fake rich people buying all the mansions and yachts and gucci and they’re the ones going to epstein island. real rich people live in modest houses and wear brandless clothes from a cheap department store.

people are so brainwashed to worship wealth that they cant put two and two together in their head that the majority of rich people are subhuman freaks who do nothing but exploit and enact violence against the rest of us so they make up these fake “good billionaires” that dont exist and act like those made up people are gonna save us from the orange man and from elon, who these same people were saying was one of the “good billionaires” less than 5 years ago
