There is a well-known internet proverb, the bullshit assymetry principle:

"The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it."

Anyone who has been in a few software chatrooms, a political communities, or any hobby groups has probably seen the eternal fountain of people asking really obvious questions, all the time, forever. No amount of patience and free time would allow a community to give quality answers by hand to each and every one of them, and gradually the originally-helpful people answering get sick of dealing with this constantly, then newcomers will often get treated with annoyance and hostility for their ignorant laziness. That's one way how communities get a reputation for being 'toxic' or 'elitist'. I've occasionally seen this first hand even on Lemmy, and obviously telling people to go away until they've figured out the answer themselves isn't a useful way to build a mass movement.

This is a reason why efficient communication matters.

Efficient teaching isn't a new idea, so we have plenty of techniques to draw from. One of the most famous texts in the world is a pamphlet, the Manifesto of the Communist Party, a way for the Communist League to share the idea of historical materialism to many thousands using a couple of dozen pages. Pamphlets and fliers are still used today at protests and rallies and for general promotion, and in the real world are often used as a resource when someone asks for a basic introduction to an ideology.

However, online, we have increased access to existing resources and linking people to information is easier than ever. I've seen some great examples of this on Lemmy with Dessalines often integrating pages of their FAQ/resources list into short to-the-point replies, and Cowbee linking their introductory reading list. So instead of burning out rewriting detailed replies to each and every beginner question from a propagandised liberal, or just banning/kicking people who don't even understand what they said wrong (propaganda is a hell of a drug), these users can pack a lot of information into their posts using effective links. Using existing resources counters the bullshit assymetry principle. There's a far lower risk of burnout and hostility when you can simply copy a bookmarked page, paste it, and write a short sentence to contextualize it. No 5 minute mini-essay in your reply to get the message across properly, finding sources each time, getting it nitpicked by trolls, and all that. Just link to an already-polished answer one click away!

There are many FAQ sites for different topics and ideological schools of thought (e.g. here's a well-designed anarchist FAQ I've been linked to years ago). There are also plenty of wikis, like ProleWiki and Leftypedia, which I think are seriously underused (I'm surprised Lemmygrad staff and users haven't built a culture of constantly linking common silly takes to their wiki's articles. What's the point of the wiki if it's not being used much by its host community?).

Notice that an FAQ is often able to link to specific common questions, and is very different from the classic "read this entire book" reply some of you may have seen before - unfortunately when a post says "how can value com from labor and not supply nd demand?", they're probably not in the mood to read Capital Vol. I-III to answer their question no matter how you ask them, but they might skim a wiki page on LTV and maybe then read further.

(Honestly, I think there's a missed opportunity for integrating information resources into ban messages and/or the global rules pages, because I guarantee more than half the people getting banned for sinophobia/xenophobia/orientalism sincerely don't think anything they said was racist or chauvanistic - it's often reiterating normal rhetoric and ""established facts"" in mass media; not a sign of reactionary attitude. The least we can do is give them a learning opportunity instead of simply pushing them further from the labour movement)

tl;dr I believe we are failing to "bridge the gap" between disaffected libs and baby leftists. I want to help fix this.

I want to focus my efforts next year on creating effective propaganda, learning how to make better propaganda, and sharing this with comrades as much as possible.

The Comfortable Class

I live what American politicians would call a "middle class" lifestyle. I live in a suburban area surrounded by other people who seem to have the same broad level of comfort to me. While in Marxist terms we would all be Proletarians or "working class", I'd prefer to add a sub-class to this that I'm calling the "comfortable class". We're not owners of Capital nor small business owners so Bourgeois or Petit-Bourgeois doesn't apply here. However, we're also not a paycheck away from homelessness, nor are we reliant on food stamps or other direct aid to live. We're probably working one main full-time job with a steady schedule. Maybe we have a "side hustle" but it's not necessary to keep it going to pay bills. I think you get the point.

Life may be somewhat comfortable, but it is not good. It's not good for anyone. Maybe I'm just projecting here, but I don't see anyone around me that's actually happy. Everyone seems pissed off, more aggressive, and on shorter tempers than I've seen ever before.

How I joined the Left

Without doxxing myself too much... Based on my identity and class position I should be a Republican. Or at least a centrist Democrat. But I'm not. I am part of the LGBT community, have a diagnosis for Autism, and never quite fit in with "normal" people.

I started my political life phonebanking for Obama, then did some Democratic Party politics for a while, fell in love with Bernie Sanders and resonated with everything he was saying, fell out of love with Democrats, and slowly drifted farther left until I became who I am today.

I believe I got here because of my non-typical identity plus a lot of patient reading, listening, and debating politics. Politics is one of my "hyper focus" subjects, which means I tend to consume way too much of it as I get fixated on learning as much as I can. I can't expect others like me to follow this path.

I feel like a lot of us have similar backgrounds or similar back stories. A lot of us are neurodiverse, disabled, or some form of queer. I'm glad we're able to come together and help each other under this banner of Marxism.

We can't wait for material conditions to get worse

It's something I see a lot as I try to reason with what to do as a Leftist. I've been told several times that we have to wait until the material conditions deteriorate enough for people to see our side of things. I don't want to wait... A lot of people are suffering NOW! And I'm not just talking about the peripheral nations; life sucks in the U.S. too! It's just easier to ignore than in a place like the Philippines.

Reaching the frustrated "normies"

We can't build a revolution with the numbers we have. We must grow!

There has to be a way to reach people who are beginning to see the cracks in the current system, but are struggling to find real solutions. People who are disenfranchised by our current electoral system, that don't vote because they see no point, that are checked out of following which person is President because nothing ever changes. People that aren't going to naturally drift towards the left because of their life circumstances. "Normies"

Read this post from a non-voter in NC. There are a lot more potential revolutionaries from this group than from the place I came from!

How do people become leftists today?

There's a common Marketing concept known as a "engagement funnel" or "sales funnel". What this funnel model shows is the path a potential buyer of a product or service falls through to get from zero ("I don't even know you exist") to a sale ("I bought your thing and am becoming an evangelist for your brand").

What does the Left "funnel" look like?

You start with the general public. Take out everyone who is a committed Fascist, Conservative, and die-hard Democrat. That's one part of the funnel.

The people who get to the next stage are potential Leftists, but now they need to know that Marxism exists. That takes another huge chunk of people out of the equation. With the sorry state of education in the U.S. this is a huge gap we have to overcome. How can someone become a Socialist if they've never even heard of that word?

Next we have people who have at least heard the S-word, but now they are turned away for some reason. Maybe it's propaganda claiming we killed 100 million people with a giant spoon, or Uyghurs, iPhone vuvuzela, or one of a hundred other talking points that keeps people from looking at what we have to offer. Lots of people fall out of the funnel here. I believe there's enough material out there to debunk all of these tired attacks at this point. Maybe they're not in the most accessible format but the content is definitely out there for people to find.

What's left? We are now looking at people who know Socialism exists and are curious enough to learn more about it beyond the mainstream smears. Great! This is our potential base of recruits! What do we have for these people? Maybe some of them are watching Second Thought or streaming Hasan, or maybe they're listening to Chapo (that's how I started)? If they're lucky, they know about these things and eventually want to learn more about this whole Socialism thing.

This is where the easiest-to-patch gap in our funnel is.

If people somehow get enough knowledge or inspiration to get past "I like the occasional LeftTok video" what do they have to welcome them? Read theory. Read Settlers. Read Marx. Read Lenin. Read Blackshirts and Reds. etc.

A lot of reading, and not easy reading either.

I believe everyone on this forum is at this point. We're all through the funnel. I have these books and more on my reading list, I'm doing study groups, etc. But most people, even those who would be comrades, aren't going to get to this step. They're going to fall out of the funnel because learning about Socialism is too hard! It's Hasan and then BAM here's a mountain of books to read!

Summary

In the marketing "funnel" that is converting people to leftism, we are falling short in two places:

• There's a major gap in the funnel where people would find out Socialism exists at all.

• Getting people from casual left "content consumer" to a true "revolutionary"

We need agit prop to cover both these gaps. What do you think?

This might be something we find useful. It looks at the 50 newest submissions, gathers all the users in the comments + the poster, and then scans their profiles for their other posts and comments, then tallies the Subreddits they're interacting with.

What you get out of it is a list of Subreddits and the number of interactions with that Subreddit, based on a given Subreddits userbase. You end up with a kind of web of interaction.

Here is a pie chart showing the subreddits that users of /r/somethingiswrong2024 who interact with the top 50 posts in the sub also interact with.

The percentages on this graph are not representative of the interactions across the whole of the data, but only representative of the percentage against the whole of the top 20 subreddits by interaction. So r/politics might say 28%, it doesn't represent 28% of ALL interactions, just 28% of the top 20 interactions.

If you ran this script, say, once a week, and logged the files, you could probably graph the changing interactions over time.

There is most likely a way you could collect this data that would result in a kind of interaction web.

I'm not sure that fetching New threads of Top threads would offer clearer results. I feel like New threads get you the most active people.

Likewise, I'm also interested in maybe cooking up a couple of scripts based on this code that could show you the Power Posters in a given sub (people with the most comments/posts with the highest engagement), generate a heat map of the active days of the week / active times of the day for a given sub.

Cultural imprinting is the mechanism whereby an ad, rather than trying to change our minds individually, instead changes the landscape of cultural meanings — which in turn changes how we are perceived by others when we use a product. Whether you drink Corona or Heineken or Budweiser "says" something about you. But you aren't in control of that message; it just sits there, out in the world, having been imprinted on the broader culture by an ad campaign.

This is an important read as we start producing our agitprop. There's a lot to think about as we try producing messages that will actually break through to the masses.

YOU are speaking!

As many are aware, there has been a lot of site drama in the past week or so. This is NOT a post to discuss that, and I ask that you keep all serious discussion about it on the pinned posts it belongs in. What I am looking to do here is ask the community what they would like to see from c/agitprop going forward.

There have been ongoing discussions on Hexbear regarding making more serious posts, having a place for effortposting to get noticed (and thus incentivizing more to be made, nobody likes spending hours working on en effortpost for 5 upbears), and having a more focused place for less casual/more academic discussion. The nature of this comm, or at least what the intended purpose was supposed to be upon its inception, was to give Hexbear users a place to produce and find agitprop for use in everyday discussions. Given these two statements, last week I made an impromptu U.S. Election response/commentary resource Megathread here on c/agitprop. I figured that perhaps this was the place to open up to users for less casual/more serious analysis and discussion regarding the U.S. election, like… for actual traditional agitprop purposes.

The post was a huge success, and the community received tons of high-effort posting from individuals into the Megathread posting their own takes on the U.S. election, many references and direct links to highlight other Hexbear user’s great effortposts elsewhere on this site, and good resources from outside of Hexbear. In my opinion, this post/style of post could be a useful and engaging format for effortpost generation/congregation of larger news events in the future.

Now finally for the purpose of this post: What would you like to see from c/agitprop going forward? Feedback on the U.S. Election response/commentary resource Megathread is of course appreciated, and I’d love to hear any ideas regarding how it went/if you (dis)liked it/holding a similar thread in the future, but please do not limit your input based only on what you have seen so far from this comm. This community is, of course, only what we make it, so any and all feedback is greatly appreciated and goes a long way towards improving everybody’s user experience.

Below I will list a few ideas I have seen floated by the community for c/agitprop in the past. Additionally, I will try to keep this list updated with any ideas that are provided in the comments of this post as well in order to highlight them for discussion.

•Effortpost Megathread for larger news events (frequency/guidelines for “larger” TBD here)

•Agitprop Megathread running parallel to the Weekly News Megathread for more nuanced discussion/analysis to be used both on Hexbear and elsewhere

•Ongoing Agitprop workshop/resource thread to organize the Hexbear community’s many skills and have relevant, ready-to-go agitprop for current events ready for dissemination outside of this site

•Reference guide for left/left-adjacent spaces to crosspost agitprop material to

•Agitprop field report for returning to Hexbear (potentially contest style) and seeing where agitprop is reaching the widest audience and receiving the most engagement

•”Quick Draw” style + up to date archive of good agitprop in order to quickly debunk common talking points

•Keeping on top of current events by preemptively posting Effortpost Megathreads for known upcoming events (Major elections, for example)

•Keeping a calendar of known upcoming events to help prepare agitprop ahead of time

•Highlighting past major events or public figures to conduct a postmortem effortpost analysis

But here’s the bigger play: we need someone with real media reach (a Hasan, Hakim, Second Thought type) to come out and say, *“I back this proposal for a national convention on December 20th, 2025, in New Orleans. That alone would spread like wildfire.

Right now, my reach is a few thousand people a week, but if you know any influencers or YouTubers, reach out. Show them the proposal. Just one big voice backing this would blow it up. And for the rest of us, keep the word going. Bring it up on Reddit, Discord, wherever, and say, “I read this blog about a national leftist convention on December 20th in New Orleans; it’s exactly what we need–spread it around!"

The more we get this circulating, the faster we build real momentum. Let’s make it happen.

My friends, brothers, sisters, comrades, today we face a moment that will test us all. It's the kind of moment that comes once in a generation. As you know, Donald Trump has won the presidency again, and there's no sugarcoating it—things are about to get harder for working people, for women, for our LGBTQ comrades, and for every community that's been pushed to the margins of this country.

And what have we seen from the so-called opposition? The Democratic Party—the party that was supposed to be for the people—has shifted so far right that they're promising walls and advancing genocide. They've got no vision, no courage, and no heart for the people. They don't want to fight for you; they want to fight over who gets to hold the reins of power. But let me tell you, folks: the people who hold that power don't care about you or me. They don't care about us any more than they care about the grass they step on or the wind that blows.

Now, I know that many of you—especially those who are young and facing this for the first time—might feel like the ground has been ripped out from under you. You're worried, maybe even scared about what the future holds. Some of you may even be wondering if you'll be safe here, wondering if you need to leave this country just to find security and a fair shot at life. But let me tell you this: you are not alone. You are not alone. There is an entire generation of people who have been where you are, who have felt that same fear, and they're still here. And I'm telling you, the sun will rise tomorrow.

Let me tell you, my friends, DIY networks exist. Real, true communities exist—communities that don't rely on politicians and their empty promises. You don't have to depend on the person on your TV screen. You can depend on each other. And I'm asking you right now: reach out. Look to your left, look to your right. Connect with your neighbors, your friends, your comrades, because now is the time to build, and build strong.

In the words of the great revolutionary Thomas Sankara: “There is no true social revolution without the liberation of women. May my eyes never see and my feet never take me to a society where half the people are held in silence. I hear the roar of women's silence. I sense the rumble of their storm and feel the fury of their revolt.”

And we're going to take that message and put it at the heart of our movement. Because, folks, there is no liberation if women aren't free. There is no justice if women's rights, including the right to choose, aren't protected. This is not a side issue—this is the issue. Women's rights are human rights. And we're going to make that clear in every corner of this nation.

We're still in the first half of this new American century, and what we build now will set the course. Let's remind ourselves of those words held by Lady Liberty herself:

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

That's the America we could be. And in that struggle for a better, freer future, women have always been the ones pushing forward. They're not just part of this movement—they've been leading it, keeping it strong, giving it life. Women are the backbone of every fight for real change. And we're here to say that if we want freedom, if we want equality, we have to start with them.

Because, let's be real: what kind of country are we building if we don't guarantee the basic rights of women? What future are we heading toward if half our population has to fight to be seen, to be heard, to be free? Fighting for women's rights isn't just the right thing to do—it's how we build a country where everyone can live with dignity.

So let me put it plain: if we're going to face these next two years with courage and strength, we need each other. We need connections that go deeper than the political rallies, that go beyond isolated protests on college campuses. We need a robust national network, built by us, for us. Not from the top down, but from the ground up, with every voice, every hand, every heart pulling together. I'm talking about a coalition that spans this whole country—local organizations, radical youth, labor unions, mutual aid groups—all of us together.

I believe it's time to think big. It's time to organize at a scale we haven't seen in decades, a century even. So here's what I'm proposing: December 20th, 2025, New Orleans. I want a national convention, a place where every corner of this movement can come together. I want to see communists, anarchists, democratic socialists, labor union leaders, Indigenous leaders, prison abolitionists, climate activists, creators, content makers, and organizers from all walks of life come together to build a plan, a strategy, a path forward.

This convention isn't just some meeting on a calendar. It's a starting line—a launch toward a future we choose, a future we build together. Because we're already 25 years into this century, and we've seen where the current leadership has taken us. The crises of our time—climate change, economic injustice, systemic racism, the oppression of women, the attack on LGBTQ+ rights—are too critical, too urgent to be left to the whims of the powerful. This convention is where we draw the line and start shaping a new way forward.

Folks, this convention is where we're getting down to the brass tacks. We're not just looking to fill up seats; we're looking to make real changes, to organize and strategize for a future we actually want to live in. If you want to help make this convention a reality, here's what you can start doing right now:

1. Join a Group—Just Pick One and Start Showing Up

Look, it doesn’t matter if it’s Freedom Road Socialist Organization, PSL, the Green Party, the Socialist Alternative, Food Not Bombs, or a mutual aid group in your area. Just pick a group and start showing up. Get into their meetings, meet people, understand their goals, and make connections. Our aim is to have people embedded in all these organizations, and we need them all talking to each other. If there’s a meeting or event coming up, go. Bring up this convention. Even if they aren’t officially involved, open up the conversation.

2. Educate Yourself—and Pass That Knowledge Along

Not everyone has the time to sit down with a stack of books, and that's fine. But if you do have that privilege, use it. Educate yourself, but don't stop there. Bring that knowledge to others. Be a resource for your friends, family, and neighbors. Don't talk down to them; we're not here to preach from some high horse. We're here to learn and build together. Remember, we are the masses. Share what you know in a way that's practical, that connects with people where they're at. If we want to see change, we have to make education and dialogue something real, something people can understand and see in their own lives.

3. Start the Conversations Where You Are

This is where it starts—right where you live, work, and spend your time. Talk to your friends and family, your coworkers, the people you already know. Bring up what's happening around us, what we're working toward. If you're a community leader, even if it's not a political setting, make space for these discussions. If we're going to change anything, it has to start by opening up these conversations in our everyday lives. Get people talking, thinking, and, more than anything, ready to take action.

Now, why New Orleans? Why December 20th, 2025? New Orleans has faced it all—storms, floods, and years of being neglected by those in power. It's a city that embodies resilience. But with climate change pressing down harder every year, there's a real risk that it won't be here in another 100 years. That's why we're gathering there: to make a promise, to take a stand, and to ensure that we don't let this moment slip away.

I'm not alone in this vision. None of us are. This is something so many of us feel in our gut—that together, we can do something different, something real. And I want to make something clear before we close: the attacks on women's rights in this country are attacks on all of us. We cannot build a free, just future if women are held back, silenced, denied their basic rights. Women hold up half the sky, and we will not stand by while they are pushed down. We need every voice, every hand, every heart in this fight.

So let's take this energy forward. Let's walk out of here knowing that we're not alone, that this movement is growing every day.

This is our moment in history. I know we will rise to meet the occasion.

This guide will go over the basics of how to circumvent reddit's ban system in order to bring more transgender and leftist people to the fediverse (which will be much safer for them). This guide is largely useful for other websites too, though the fediverse is more resilient to these methods due to the manual entry process on most sites.

Things you'll need to download:

• Tor Browser

• Mullvad Browser

• ProtonVPN (or a VPN of your choice, Proton is the best free VPN/email, the best paid VPN is probably Mullvad and can be hyper anonymous if you need it). It is suggested that you use a separate Proton account for your VPN than for your anonymous email. If you're super paranoid and breaking a lot of laws, you can have your TOR connection end with a VPN in order to mask your TOR traffic to reddit, but that is outside the scope of this guide.

What to think on to be effective:

• A target. Certain subreddits and communities may house more leftists and trans people.

• Contradictions. What are differences between the base of the community and the moderators? What are differences between the base of the community and the content on reddit?

What not to do:

• Do not change the base configuration of any of the browsers (besides a fully local editor such as Dark Reader), they're perfect as they are 💖

• Do not ever turn off the VPN while conducting activities.

• Do not ever access your Proton anonymous email without TOR Browser.

Steps:

1. You need an anonymous Proton mail account.

2. Open up Tor Browser.

3. Go to YOPmail. This is a temporary email site with new domains every day. Proton is vigilant about these services, so you may need to try different domains for your temp mail, such as in this table.

4. Go to proton.me in Tor Browser and sign up using the temp mail. If they block you, try a different domain until it sends an email to the temp mail.

5. Now that you have a Proton account, go to Proton Pass. As always, only access the Proton account with Tor Browser. Create a new email alias, you will be using aliases for any new reddit account you make.

• Caveat: Proton may ask for further verification by detecting that you used a temp mail after signup. Go to emailnator.com in TOR and get a temporary gmail address to use for receiving verification, then turn off the recovery option.

6. Open up Mullvad Browser and be sure your VPN is turned on. You can check if your IP is leaking on sites like ipleak.net.

• Q: Why Mullvad Browser? Its base configuration is good, and if you use private browsing, reddit will be incapable of building a fingerprint on you, which is the second way it can ban people via tracking. Be sure to save passwords in KeepassXC or a password manager of your choice. Reddit also blocks sign-ins from TOR Browser (due to its superior anonymity), but do not block VPNs, and Mullvad Browser is best used with VPNs.

7. Make a reddit account with your proton email alias. This should be fairly straightforward, sometimes reddit will ask for a lot of captchas. Do them, it'll work eventually. Go to your main proton inbox (in TOR browser) and handle the verification email.

8. Done! You are now ready to agitate for a leftist cause. Reddit communities and reddit itself often have a ban on participation until you reach a certain karma level or account age. The easiest way to bypass this is to go to a meme subreddit, find an old meme, and (lmao) repost it. You'll get thousands of upvotes immediately and easily bypass the spam filter. You can also make accounts in bulk in order to accrue time.

With good knowledge of macros, its even possible to set it up so that you can make accounts with one press of a button.

I think I like Soviet space propaganda the most. I have others, but I think this one is my favorite. Its over my PC.
