Delayed a bit to let the new seasonals start.

Manga:

I started Five Star Stories (1987) and Kowloon Generic Romance, but have not gone far into them. Good to see some quality world building though. Something often missing these days.

Anime:

Super Robot Wars W is excellent, and it convinced me to watch Tekkaman Blade. A good early 90s sci-fi mechanime. So far it's pretty lean in story, but what's there is good. B+

I've been continuing shows I've been watching with comrades, and Full Metal Panic is still peak.

Not much of a status update, but I figured to make this month's thread, because nobody else did.

seeing this made me just break down crying. if you'd asked me yesterday what i thought of akira toriyama i would have probably said i respected him immensely, but his work didn't hold a special place in my heart. but realizing that he's gone is just devastating. such an iconic, important artist. the world is worse without him

I'm in dire need of some new entertainment to read and I've been on a comic kick recently. I've read some manga and I'd like to get some more, rather than just stumble into things once in a while.

I think I enjoy action manga, though I get bored with the fights pretty quick. I'm interested in every genre I suppose, as long as it's interesting. I'll list what I've read and enjoyed here, moreso you'll have an idea of what I'd be into, not to tie me down to that genre. Really I'd love to broaden my horizon, but this is slop I'm looking for - easy reading.

  • Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Mieruko
  • Berserk
  • Detective Conan
  • One Piece (though since dressrosa I've not been as into it. Mainly reading out of habit these days)
  • Early Naruto (In general I feel like Shonen start off with an interesting premise and then it does a timeskip and it becomes all about power levels. I don't understand why they do that.)
  • Yu-Gi-Oh!
  • Shaman King
  • Junji Itos stuff
  • Dragon Ball (should have stopped after the cell games tbh)
  • Delicious in Dungeon
  • Death note
  • solo levelling.

And recently I read solo leveling which was some nice enough isekai slop. I wouldn't mind getting a good isekai recommended.
I dislike fanservice though, so that eliminates all isekai more or less.

Rejoice comrades, february's thread is here

Manga

I returned and picked up Ah! My Goddess and Oresama Teacher again. They're both still fun manga. I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class made a positive first impression on me; as far as kinda generic romcoms can be. Unique in that regard was the manhwa Skill of Lure, which does have a really eyebrow-raising premise, and was somehow shockingly well written (and short) for what it was. Less r/incel and more r/relationshipadvice kind of stuff, I suppose. It not being in the dreaded long strip format made it easier to read.

Anime

I finished Season 1 of Full Metal Panic! (2002) and it's fun in how it merges end of history era brainwormed action movie tropes and a romantic comedy with the most unhinged male and arguably female leads in anime (Chidori Kaname is a total girlboss). A ...which leads into Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (2003), a slice of life spinoff set between S1 and S2 and animated by KyoAni, which two episodes in is already one of the funniest anime I have seen. How did this show fade into relative obscurity?

Speaking of hilarity, Cautious Hero (2019) is an isekai so similar in spirit to Konosuba that it feels like a spin-off of that show. I did not go in expecting actual quality, but the show does have it. Ristarte does have some great facial expressions in the show. I have not finished it yet.

Instead of sharing the comedic aspects of FMP (well... usually), New Mobile Report Gundam Wing (1995) shares an oddly similar main character. The show is better and less so-bad-it's-good as the initial impression left on me, even if it does heavily borrow from the entire UC Gundam universe to the point of feeling a bit like a recap of 0079 to CCA. Definitely worth checking out, even if imo not as good as either G Gundam or After War X Gundam. B+

The Apothecary Diaries S2 (2025) Maoism is back, and is the same quality it was in Season 1. Hell yeah, A

Midnight Eye: Goku (1989) is not about Son Goku, but a 60 minute cyberpunk OVA. For what it was, pretty good, even if it had some B movie qualities. B

From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated! (2025) is fun, and, even though it has a neat twist, fairly generic. For what it is, it's decent. B

directly related Games

Super Robot W is one of the best written games in the franchise I have played so far, but much like other games in the series, the further you go into the game, the longer the missions get. Beyond an exciting boss fight, the difficulty is medium to easy. A

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re returning to the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 25 through 30 of the fifth part, Golden Wind. Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is Luca (2021), Pixar’s story of two boys in the Italian Riviera who are human while on land, but sea monsters in water. They try to ingratiate themselves with the people on land while concealing the vast undersea world from them. Good reviews for this one. Apparently, it is influenced by Ponyo (2008) and other Studio Ghibli movies. This is the only film to date of director Enrico Casarosa.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

Araki set aside his career in traditional anime to explore new opportunities in the h3ntai industry. Seeking greater creative freedom, he now takes on roles such as director, character designer, storyboard artist, and animation director in adult anime productions

It may seem surprising that an animator who contributed to the first Urusei Yatsura film and multiple episodes of Toei Animation’s globally hit One Piece is now producing h3ntai. However, one cannot overlook the significant demand for such content, which also offers more creative flexibility.

Going from a hectic weekly schedule to a monthly/seasonal schedule is the kind of retirement job a long serving animator would want.

Surprisingly, we have never watched any Korean animation on Hextube; that changes tonight. This is the only notable work to date of director Lee Dae-hee.
