I don't know about USA. I have seen free range chicken farms in Europe and there was nothing "horror" about them - but than animal welfare standards are much higher in Europe than in the US in general.

During sex determination, male chicks are thrown into an industrial blender.

And we've genetically modified chickens to lay eggs at a rate which regularly cause them inflammation so severe they end up getting fevers and dying.

Sounds like a horror show to me.
