I think it's more likely used to prevent reverse-image-search or break repost detection.

its very easy for a screenshot of a tumblr post to blend in with the rest of post and appear as if the screenshot is your own opinion. we drown posts to make it clear that it is not written by the author of the main post (and that its bullshit)
