Didn't the Hui Aloha ʻĀina become part of the republican party? I remember reading that that is in part why the remnants of the hawaiian royal family are involved with the republican party.
I'm not sure what happened to the historical party, but this Hui Aloha Aina is a new organization.
Figured as much. Checked their website and they do claim to be a reconstitution of the organisation as of 2016... including seemingly being monarchists? At least they make a couple of references to specifically bringing back the kingdom of hawaii
Restoring the monarchy is a crucial component of the Hawaiian independence movement because it was a key social and cultural institution that was obliterated by American colonialism. The right of national self-determination includes the right to determine your nation's form of governance, and we really shouldn't waste any of our breath criticizing it when our energy should go towards supporting the removal of United States from Hawaii.
According to Wikipedia the original one back in 1890s became the Home Rule Party in 1900, which would then merge into the Republican party in 1912
Yeah that's basically how I remember it. I also remember a Russian revolutionary being involved at one point.
