Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

eyyy there goes $140 million dollars just so the chuds could take their chud-to-be tax burden kids to gawk at the military propaganda while saying "whooooa look at da airpwane"

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

I hate this take. Air shows are awesome, they fascinate children and adults alike. Seeing these machines first hand is inspiring...

There's little enough in this world that I would describe as "inspiring", so I'll take what I can get.

[–] hoch@lemmy.world 25 points 10 hours ago (5 children)

Stfu, airshows and jets are fun to watch

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

See also: monster trucks, demolition derbies, fireworks, contact sports, and so much more. Wasteful and dangerous? Yep. Fun? Also yep.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 16 minutes ago* (last edited 16 minutes ago)

In fairness to contact sports / martial arts, when done properly, they can be significantly less dangerous, teach discipline and respect, instill a sense of realism and proportionality regarding the application of violence, keep you in decent physical shape, provide your life with a routine structure, and provide some real world socializing/social group.

Many also come with some kind of a philosophy that stresses self defense and essentially a 'duty to retreat' mentality: violence is always the last resort.

They're fun as fuck. Some of the best pics I have are from an air show! f35

^f35 doing a zooom!

Air shows appeal to the male fantasy of being Tom Cruise / go really fast

Kickstart My Heart but you're avoiding Air Defense in WW3

[–] tgcoldrockn@lemmy.world 6 points 9 hours ago

Saw the RedBull Air Race in NYC. Amazing stuff.

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml -1 points 7 hours ago

there are plenty of things which are fun to watch which didn't involve spending billions of tax dollars on killing machines

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Perfect example of the kind of comment that makes social media so toxic to everyone.

[–] Riverside@reddthat.com 2 points 5 hours ago

Actually, celebrating child-bombing devices crashing is not toxic!

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 18 points 12 hours ago (4 children)

So are drag races and monster truck rallies. Big and fast machines attract and fascinate mostly men.

[–] kahjtheundedicated@lemmy.world 30 points 12 hours ago (4 children)

..which aren’t (usually) paid for with taxpayer dollars

But I’m guessing doing air shows counts towards training hours, so they’re going to be flying those planes regardless. Still feels like a massive waste when two of them crash and burn in a show though

[–] klugerama@lemmy.world 19 points 12 hours ago

It happens during training, too,so I don't really see a distinction.

[–] xylol@leminal.space 3 points 9 hours ago

Most airshows I've been aren't put on by the military, they are usually just invited to a segment but often times they don't even show up.

Most planes are privately owned like old planes or stunt pilots.

The military jets definitely cost money to move around so it is an extra expense

[–] Dultas@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

I'm pretty sure it does. Flyovers at ballgames etc do so I don't see why airshows wouldn't.

[–] thisorthatorwhatever@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

There should be an option of going to a simpler airshow. Planes takes off, circle the airfield and land, one after the other.

[–] xylol@leminal.space 2 points 9 hours ago

Most airshows have this, usually with historic planes and such. Similar with the air taxis they were showing off recently for the Olympics

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Like, i know im a little odd, but i would for sure attend this if it was affordable

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

You can just go sit outside the airport and watch for free

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 1 points 1 hour ago

As someone who doesn't attend them anymore, I think most of the fun in an air show ALSO involves the ground stuff. As a kid I actually touched and sat in a few planes.

[–] xylol@leminal.space 1 points 9 hours ago

Air shows are pretty far reaching, you don't have to be in the paid box seating to watch generally. For example in San Francisco you just have to be anywhere with view to the water, in Salinas its a pretty small airport so you can be anywhere around it but tickets to get in are like $30 so its worth it to me to go in and be able to climb around helicopters and stuff, see the robotics and other stuff people bring and the play area for our kid to socialize a bit with kids

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

That's definitely not true. Maybe it is in the US, but seeing machines go fast or tackle complex challenges isn't a gender-specific thing. For example, 42% of Formula 1 fans are female. Plenty of women spectating and competing at drag strips, land speed, rally, etc.

The old conservative culture of assuming things of people or pigeonholing them based on gender—like, "attract and fascinate mostly men"—is not as relevant as it used to be back in the old days, nor should it be preserved.

Those arent used to bomb innocent civilians... Wtf are you talking about?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 0 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

also racecar/nascar, its so mind-numbing boring, but conservative seems to love any kind of sports.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Only if it's young dudes playing. Conservative men also love movies where it's mostly just young dudes (like that 300 movie where the cast is all handsome young dudes in leather panties being led by an older middle aged dude) They really seem to prefer young dudes in general I guess.
