Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Even with the two suspended sentences they're letting her off the hook quite lightly if you ask me.

Sure, teenage boys are horny all the time, but this is a clear case of a power imbalance and an adult abusing it/them for their own gratification.

Funny how a scenario like this was nearly verbatim part of the "boys get raped too" course that was a mandatory part of my curriculum 26 years ago, and we're still treating this differently as a society.

I think the age difference is what really sells it. No one seems to care about the power imbalance. Look at Monica Lewinsky. She was an intern to the most powerful man in the country and still to this day people make jokes about her like she was a harlot gold digger and it was consensual so it's ok.

https://newuniversity.org/2018/10/29/power-and-consent-the-clinton-lewinsky-affair-was-not-inherently-abusive/

The rapists own wife even insists that since she consented it wasn't power imbalance.

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/clinton-lewinsky-affair-abuse-power-no-says-hillary-yes-say-experts-211422910.html

She was Jay Leno's favorite target for a year after the assault and the media constantly painted the victim as the bad guy.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/feb/27/monica-lewinsky-says-bill-clinton-affair-was-gross-abuse-of-power

In the end, the kid was underage and legally couldn't give consent. So rape is rape simply because of the age. In power dynamics though, the victim can end up being the butt of the joke for the rest of their lives. The culture behind supporting rapists and not holding them accountable perpetuates this no matter the sex of the victim. Here's a perfect example from SNL

Yup, if you do the gender swap test on this case, it doesn't pass merit.

[–] Beth@piefed.social 12 points 3 days ago

You should really see the light sentences rapists often get.

Are we treating it differently? Male rapists don’t typically get very long sentences either.

Rape should be punished harsher for all perpetrators. Including this case. It’s enraging.

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Depends on the amount of money they have. Studies have shown that women tend to get much lighter sentences. And you got to consider how unoften they get reported.

[–] velma@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago

True, wealth and social status affect sentences quite a bit.

And you got to consider how unoften they get reported.

That's for all sexual assaults and rapes honestly.

Rapists and pedophiles should be getting harsher sentences regardless.

I still think sentences for rape are too short regardless of the perpetrator’s gender.

These kinds of studies also don’t take into account the amount of perpetrators that are never reported or caught. Which we all know is a pretty large number.

Why would stats on jail time include unconvicted and unaccused? That doesnt make any sense. Also, accused doesn't mean guilty.

It was treated as a neat little bit of trivia in my sociology class.
