Interesting. I dropped Ryza but I liked the general gameplay. My issue was a sudden difficulty spike, which required me to go back and do lots of alchemy (requiring me to collect lots of stuff). Wasn't in mood for that at the time. I wonder if I should try Yumia instead.
"Collecting lots stuff and doing lots of alchemy" is part of the core gameplay of this series, so if you didn't enjoy that in Ryza you may have similar issues with the rest of the series.
That being said, Yumia is a rare game in the series with an open world map and a lot more focus on exploration, so it might work better for you.
It isn't that I didn't enjoyed that part, its just I didn't realise how much I had to do that and then hit a wall, and didn't want to do too much of that at once. I think starting with the right mindset wouldn't cause the problem, but I'll only know after trying.
Ah, I see. The solution for almost everything in Atelier is crafting, so you should be doing that constantly. I usually take a break every time I drop by the home base to see if I managed to unlock new recipes, and stop to create new gear whenever I get a new ingot or cloth.
I've saved these two images from Ryza 3 as a "why you should craft stuff" example. It shows a late-game character with their initial gear and with some reasonably optimized gear I made. It's a returning character from Ryza 1 so I shouldn't be a significant spoiler for you.
Wow, that's some difference!
