Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

There is no organized left in the US to disrupt, so I'm curious who the target is going to end up being. I guess its anyone deemed "anti-fascist" for whatever reason. So what, is this intending to give cops free reign to attack whoever by claiming they were terrorists? Is that different than what is already the case?

Is it a go ahead to start cracking heads if they see anarchists passing out flyers?

[–] dead@hexbear.net 52 points 4 months ago (2 children)

They're definitely targetting the anti-ICE and anti-Israel protests. Many of the anti-ICE protests were organized by PSL.

There's a line that Trump keeps saying that the anti-ICE protestors all have matching printed signs and that this is evidence that they are being payed to protests. This is likely referring to PSL protestors having matching PSL signs. Lib protestors all have non-matching harry potter back-to-brunch written with marker protest signs.

They might target the No Kings protestors as well. Trump says that Jasmine Crockett is a Radical Leftist. There is no limit on who gets targeted.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago

I was curious about that with No Kings coming back again. Last time it was a lot of nothing, the vibe has shifted since

[–] sudoer777@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 months ago

My local PSL chapter was using Google Forms to survey prospective members, which I thought was sketchy when I was trying to meet them (making identifying information accessible by the feds), and the implications surrounding this executive order is why

[–] LangleyDominos@hexbear.net 30 points 4 months ago

Liberal billionaires, liberal NGOs, liberal charities (remember Trump got his charity taken away by NY libs), and DNC funding. Those will be the targets. Maybe they can catch DSA through Mamdani. Maybe PSL.

so I'm curious who the target is going to end up being.

Oh yeah, such a mystery, who could it be?

Chuds only care about abortion amirite, they would never target someone only based on their skin color

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 13 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

They already do that. I'm saying what's the intent with this order?

[–] jack@hexbear.net 31 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

The call for Lutnick to investigate and restrict the finances of these groups is pulling directly from some crank congresspeople who sent Lutnick a letter last week to investigate PSL, PYM, Codepink, the People's Forum, Breakthrough News, etc using these same tactics. That's the organized left being targeted here.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

PSL

The only third-party left you can vote for now is libertarian, great country.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 20 points 4 months ago (1 children)

think about this: the Abundance libs are basically libertarians. they want to get rid of the "groups". trump is going to go after these "groups". the neolib/libertarians will be pleased and help

this solves the dems problem too. the tech right is already pivoting to the dems. any future cultural civil war will be between christian nationalists (maga) and the tech right (abundance, thiel, etc).

our two choices will be Yarvinists salivating at the thought of turning our bodies into diesel fuel and christian nationalists who want to turn the entire U.S. (except their tiny enclaves) into Gaza

[–] 666@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

my two cents is ultimately the christian nationalists are likely the ones going to win, if not pyrrhic. So much of the U.S is brain-washed Christian propaganda down to the very foundations of it's creation.

You can only appeal to and give zealots power for so long until they demand everything.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

i think the same. or the Yarvinists may hold onto some network states/cities on the coasts (cali, around D.C., etc) and just make a truce if it actually went to a hot war.

basically how effective AI in warfare becomes determines whether the tech right can hold their own. or if they can get their surveillance tech up enough to continuously weaken christian nationalists by neutralizing leadership and disrupting their ability to organize. but in the end it's a numbers game and you are right.

unfortunately non-religious types may be driven into the arms of the tech right for protection because the christian nationalists are truly barbaric in what they want to do

[–] 666@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

barbarism and insidiousness. There's a certain projection in the christian nationalist mind of their ideal of "Jews" in of this secretive religious cabal that inflitrates ideology and subsumes people to their "apocalyptic" will, or in some cases, supremacy.

Ironically, my entire life, I have only seen christian nationalists inflitrate ideology, subsume people to a self-destructive or globally destructive world-view or a value of christian/white supremacy. Never known a Jew like that and I consider Zionists nearly separate.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 15 points 4 months ago

Yeah shit alright. We're at zero tolerance real fast then

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

They already do that.

No, actually.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'm not being dismissive of that aspect. I was curious about if additional factors are propelling this due to some of the language used within this order

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That’s fair, I’m just being reactive

There is no organized left in the US to disrupt

Not true, obviously

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 25 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Not in a way that matters, no. The shit they're responding to was in no way part of an organized left resistance. There's like protests sometimes, usually 90% libs

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 18 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Nah, things like the Palestinian protests, the encampments in the universities, the push back against ICE in places like LA, those have all been spear headed by the organized left in this country. They're small, but they exist, and they've been growing as the Dems let people down and the number of crises continue to exist. Which means they need to be stomped out so no one can join them as they ramp up the fascism and liberalism let's people down.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

The interesting thing to see is if it will actually work. In my experience, any chilling effect is nullified by the fact that we were correct and the libs that care are not trained to ever shut the hell up about anything. It will take a serious, dedicated, crackdown to actually stomp out these kinds of radicalized libs from joining these organizations, if anything this gives them more national prominence than they ever had before.

That said, these people also are not trained cadres, and likely just add more chaos into the mix, plus fed infiltration. Curse of interesting times indeed.

At least the Dems are proving their fecklessness at every turn here.

[–] regul@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

It would be very funny if they started rolling out the stormtroopers for the "No Kings" libfests.
