Unrelated, I also hate fake phonetic transcription. It's [fɹ̥ɛnd̥] on Wiktionary. [frend] would be pronounced with a rolled (trilled) r like in Spanish. The /e/ is closer to the ay of may

Yeah, this says nothing about how to pronounce it unless you already speak English and know how those letters are pronounced, which defeats the whole purpose.
