long and full history of Nintendo fans writing better stories than Nintendo
Not to make this too off-topic, but the fact that really good stories can easily be made by casual fans just goes to show the difference between a hired writer and an unemployed one is nepotism.
Make your bad art, make your fanfic. Before you know it you’ll be outperforming the “professionals”.
From what I understand, the Nintendo old-guard are very precious about IP. A Zelda game has to check all the same boxes as the previous Zelda games, a Mario must look like previous Marios, ect. As they've died or become distracted by Illumination movies, it's eased up somewhat. The early pitch for what would become BotW was for a far future sci-fi Link fighting an alien invasion rather than Gannon. You can kinda see the bones of that idea [tablet, motorcycle], but it was still largely rejected by the old heads.
