{打工+人|hit work + person} > 打工人> worker
{打+工人|hit + work person} > 打工人 > beat up the worker
打工人打工人
So true 😢
Is it pronounced differently? How do you distinguish?
Very slightly differently, depending on dialect the latter 打+{工人|gongren} could be gōngrén or gōngren (i.e. toneless for the rén).
Only for the dialects that pronounce it gōngren would the two meanings be also pronounced slightly differently.
Otherwise, both are pronounced the same, so the distinction would be a mental word break
In written Chinese would there be a spacing difference?
Nope, just written with all characters written without spaves until a ,or 。marks a clause or sentence break
