I grew up around them, so my brain tuned ticking clocks out. Certainly I've lost that ability since then but I haven't encountered a bedroom with a ticking clock in a long time.

Would the sound of a dripping tap be innocuous?

The clock works as intended and ticks in predictable intervals. It's much the same as rain whipping against a window or a old house groaning during storm.

The faucet dripping means something is wrong and will annoy me to no end. It's much the same as a buzzing fly or screaming/panicking children.

In other words: you can't really compare those two.

Interesting.

I can tolerate non repetitive sounds, like rain, or wind, or the house settling.

Reliably consistent sounds do my head in.

Clocks, dripping taps, fan clicks - all invented by the devil
