Surprised nintendo is doing this, I thought a part of their "non-controversial" "family" image would mean they wouldn't want to include things like this or gay marriage in a game. Though they probably recognise that approximately 0% of the CHUDs complaining about this were ever going to buy the game.

It’s a bit the other way around. There was complaints from players of the prior Tomodachi game about the lack of same-sex relationships (I think it might have been possible in an early version of the game but got patched out). People were like “I want to put my gay friends on my island but then they end up in heterosexual relationships.” So Nintendo promised to make the next game more inclusive in order to satisfy the players.

As far as I know Nintendo tend to be very progressive in these cases, to this day it recognizes gay marriage, even if Japan doesn't.
