Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Specifically Russian leadership. Without a doubt. Try this: "Putin is bad for Russia"

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 11 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (3 children)

Man, sometimes I hate internet discourse, everything is hyperbole all the time and the only recognized positions are extremes.

"maybe next time dont listen to russian propaganda." - "You think [...] Brexit only exists because of Russia?"
"Russia is bad for this world" - "Are you suggesting Russia should be destroyed?"

It's so draining.

[–] _Nico198X_@piefed.europe.pub 4 points 21 hours ago

totally agree. they're bad faith actors. said my piece, but not for his benefit. now i block him.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today -2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, almost as draining as hearing idiots claim that everything is part of a huge Russian plot, so they don't have to actually change their failing strategies.

It's been 10 years now and you chuckleheads are still doing it.

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 5 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

And again jumping on shit nobody here said or even insinuated.

Someone just mentions that Brits should not have listened to Russian propaganda concerning Brexit and you immediately start this entire script fighting one strawman after another, somehow ending up in american politics for fucks sake.

Nobody said it was only due to propaganda, nobody even said it was mainly due to propaganda, nobody said that Russia should be destroyed.

Calm down mate, take a breather and stop fighting things you just imagine that other people are saying, because they're not.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today -5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not your mate - she left a long time ago, my little chickenhawk.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

not your mate

You certainly won't make any, or make anyone listen to you, by name calling and declaring people idiots like this. That's not how you make people listen to you. "Hey, idiots/chuckleheads/etc!"

🙄 You are only yelling into the void... Just a quick personality check for you, dear. It could be healthy to do one every now and then. ❤️👍

~~This 'I’m so tired of internet discourse' act is a classic move to shut down a conversation you're losing. You’re conflating a critique of a toxic leadership with a call for destruction because you can’t actually defend Putin’s record. Russia’s military is an international embarrassment and its leadership is a global parasite; those aren't 'extreme positions,' they’re the consensus of anyone not on the Kremlin's payroll. You aren't 'drained'—you're just out of arguments.~~

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Dude, I'm not the person you were responding to and I'm on your side in this?

[–] CovfefeKills@lemmy.world -3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

My bad I am not being thoughtful about this, I am responding to russian shills with AI responses I truly am putting in the minimal amount of effort. Sorry!

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

with AI responses

Oh come on!

[–] CovfefeKills@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

That is the point!

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today -1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

having listened to enough NAFO chickenhawks talk about how Russia is "orcs" who have no respect for human life while they celebrate the deaths of conscripts from their couch, you might want to be specific about that in the future

[–] CovfefeKills@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Well I never mentioned destroying anyone so I didn't think I needed to specify what needed to be destroyed until that was brought up.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today 0 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Try this: "Russia is bad for this world"

is what I was responding to

[–] CovfefeKills@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I was actually going to say more horrid shit instead of just that but I remembered I have Russian friends and didn't actually feel that way I am just angry.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today 2 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Sure, and I get that.

But demonizing entire peoples is part of how warmongers get us to support this awful shit to begin with. It's one reason why my take is no war but class war, personally.

[–] cmhe@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

TBH, Russia is a country and does not equal Russians citizen. Saying that a country or its existence is bad, doesn't mean all people with citizenship of that county are bad. People will still be there when a country is dissolved.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

OK, so you're calling for Russia to be dissolved?

[–] cmhe@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

IDK, I couldn't think of what kind of repercussions that would have... That would really depend on how it is dissolved and what would come after it, I suppose.

But TBH, with the right handling, organization and proper new structure, every nation should be dissolved... Cosmopolitanism would have its perks.

[–] mattyroses@lemmy.today 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Or maybe a worldwide workers' state? Think we're getting there now . . .

[–] cmhe@lemmy.world 1 points 20 minutes ago* (last edited 18 minutes ago)

Maybe. Als long as it isn't authoritarian, protects the weak from the strong and provides the people with the most personal positive freedom, security and safety, without infringing on the personal freedom of others, it should be fine. On the specifics we will have to work together on.

But we are leading off track. Currently I would say that the machinations of Russia, China, the U.S, Israel, and Iran are not good for the world. And in case authoritarian regimes, this can be traced back to the leaders of these countries, not the population. The fish stinks from the head. So saying this or that country is bad, doesn't mean the population should suffer.

[–] CovfefeKills@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Yes. There is a great point a Greenlander made during that recent thing it was something about "hey americans don't say sorry for trump we are judging you as a whole the same way you judge russia as a whole" and I didn't like that so I should have been more careful with my wording.
