Cute Russian comic. The home of the official English version is here if anyone wants to skip ahead (or support them): https://boosty.to/gabiconomics-en

Nepotism is a type of favoritism where people in power give special advantages - such as jobs or other privileges - to their relatives or friends simply because of their personal connection, not based on any merit.

I’ve always thought of nepotism more as being favoring family than friends, and more about favoritism in a hiring/promotion/appointment context than contracts, though I suppose it probably does extend to that. With the Snow White references, they might consider each other family, but either that got lost in translation or it’d be closer to cronyism IMO.

If it's family it's nepotism, if it's friends it's networking

I knew I still got the word wrong! gabi-exasperated

In modern day, it seems nepotism does extend to friends at this point.

Nepotism = favoritism to family members, regardless of merit

Cronyism = favoritism to friends, regardless of merit

"Crony" has kinda fallen out of use, especially when "Nepo Baby" is so popular right now.

This is why I originally deleted my comment, cronyism is a better word, but I wonder if there is a better word to combine nepotism and cronyism.

Language is a social construct, so words mean whatever we agree they do, but it feels like we already had a separate word for that baker-had-one-day-good-pay

Imnecomrade has left the chat

well now I don’t know what to think gabi-grief

Sorry, I deleted my response (which I undeleted now for the sake of reference since you responded) because I realized cronyism is a better word for nepotism when it comes to giving favors to friends, though I wonder if there is a better and more general word to combine nepotism and cronyism because I find them to be the same at this point.
