I find America today to be very relevant to the whole problem surrounding the Ring from LOTR.
The Ring gives a very particular variant of superpower. While it does enhance what you already have, it also gives you power over others. It's a very useful power - rather than convince someone to do what you want, you can use the Ring to make them do it. And they'll love it! This power is so useful, in fact, that it's hard to give up. Someone else could use it for evil, so you obviously need to keep the Ring on your finger, right? Only YOU know how to fix the country, because everyone else would be a moron or evil otherwise.
If the Ring existed in real life, someone could use it to raise an army, overthrow Citizens United, and institute true democracy. Or a dictatorship, because idiots caused Citizens United to be formed in the first place, and they can't be allowed to do that again. Right?
Trump looks like a Ringbearer who let the power go to his head. And the lesser Rings are held by the people in Congress and the SCOTUS.
I mean, Trump is known for a love of gold objects, maybe he bought some old antique ring at some point? And it is a miracle that he's lived for long as he has, considering his diet and lifestyle...
Well he sure looks like fucking Gollum, so...
[REDACTED] is Golum now in my head and there is no way back. He's a murderous weasel that should have stayed in a cave.
