Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

We all know the hypocrisies of the pro- Israel stances, I’m not going into specific arguments but it’s just everywhere. Normal people seem to have bought in even quicker than they did with supporting Ukraine. it’s awful. Free Palestine.

this is why i don't go outside and i'm only engaging with the topic here and by watching hasan do coverage

I tried to broach the topic with a friend. They immediately cited someone in their professional group on Facebook who lives in Israel and gave the line about beheaded babies. I said it was completely unfounded and no evidence and they responded with “people didn’t believe the holocaust at first, either”. I tried explaining more but when you’re dealing with someone who really has no understanding at all, all that explaining you have to do, to them it sounds like you’re out of your mind or something. So that was fun.

Edit: I feel like this gave me an insight to how a lot of Americans see this. They just passively hear “terrorists”, “killing concertgoers”, “babies”, etc and they just clutch at their pearls and then go back to whatever they were doing. Anyone who actually understands the issue is suspect.

Edit 2: I hate Facebook with every fibre of my being. So many people I know will literally believe anything they see there if it’s from some group they’re in. I mean Iove you all but I still try and fact check things here.

beheaded babies.

dude the fucking beheaded babies discourse. That bit came from an unverified report from some random unnamed IOF soldiers, and every fucking liberal is weaponizing it to justify the continued onslaught on Gaza

[–] star_wraith@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s out of control how this is becoming the narrative

[–] very_poggers_gay@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago

i'm seeing lib/left-leaning friends of mine sharing posts on Instagram essentially saying that defending violence of Palestinians towards Jewish Israelis is how we get the next holocaust, of parroting the beheaded babies bullshit to justify this argument... But they ignore the openly fascist rhetoric of Israel officials and the decades of state violence committed by Israel on the +2 mil Palestinians entrapped in Gaza, which arguably meets the definition of fucking a concentration camp.

guts-rage.

Liberals: They killed babies! Now please ignore the fact the IDF has also killed babies in the past and right now with carpet bombing!!!

[–] yoink@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

whataboutism, just cos the IDF did it doesn't make it ok, silly tankie don't you know the difference between when good guys do things and when bad guys do things /s

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago

This has been my line.

First of all all the reports of this kind of thing are coming from sources like "the Jewish chronicle" whose entire website is full of articles about how great Netanyahu is, but setting that aside even if the absolute worst reports are true until Hamas gets custom t shirts designed and printed bragging about killing Israeli babies Hamas still has the moral high ground.

[–] LeZero@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago

:yeonmi-park: In Israel, Hamas is killing babies by destroying their incubators

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 19 points 2 years ago

yeah, the amerikkkan coverage of this has been somehow more full-throatedly pro-Israel than Israeli media's own coverage. it's incredibly disturbing

I feel like people hesitate to even think socially unacceptable thoughts in the privacy of their own head, which is why atrocity propaganda works so well. it shuts down people's brains, because questioning a narrative that terrible is socially unconscionable.

*if they're not too racist, then it sometimes works to say something like "yeah, it's horrible, but rage like this is inevitable when [describe conditions in Palestine]" because then you are countering one atrocity with another and it gets the brain working again
