Corals.

Specifically reef keeping. I will spend hours browsing coral on aquarium sites, looking to find the perfect one for my tank.

Do you have a favorite site to suggest how to get started?

[-] DragonAce@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Sorry, I do not.

I've been reefkeeping for over 20 years, I learned by working in a tropical fish store for years.

Thanks for inspiring me to take a crack at it myself! If I actually wind up starting a tank, I'll try to remember to send you a message

Are you on the aquariums sub here? :)

I want to get a saltwater tanks someday. It looks a bit intimidating to see people putting in chemicals every 6 hours on YT channels, but I want to try it. Already have a small freshwater tank here!

I am not, I will have to go join.

If you're just looking to get a salt water fish only tank, then there is no need to add anything once your tank is cycled and you've got fish in it. Just like freshwater, the types of fish you have dictate the level of difficulty in care. Just do some searches on beginner salt water aquarium guides and you should find a lot of results with walkthrus.

Oh yeah! I think I'd want to try corals, too. I love planted tanks, and miss the vibrant reefs of my childhood, which humanity has since wrecked pretty bad. Even if its just a small tank, it would be nice to have a small sliver of the natural world with me. :)

As they said, you can go really simple, but I wanted to chip in as a chemicals every 6 hours person, I've got a machine that does it, I never have to think about it.

Good to know! Do things go bad really quick if the machine goes bad or the power goes out on vacation? Or can it coast off what it has for a week or so?

Same. I go in phases on what I'm into, I've had an acan phase, a clove phase, a euphylia phase, and a mushroom phase, all this year.

[-] DragonAce@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

I've been on an acan, zoa, acro phase this year. Last year it was cyphastreas, montis, pretty much any encrusting.

[-] Devi@kbin.social 1 points 8 months ago

I've never had an encrusting phase, I'm not a fan of them, I'm guessing thats coming!
