It's so funny because before the lib invasion of july/august lemmy.ml was the biggest instance and guess what? It was and still is mostly populated by libs (although the situation is still better than on .world) i actually signed up here on accident, before even knowing what federation meant, I actually wanted to register on lemmygrad (TBF not many people knew what federation was 2 years ago, lemmy was even more niche and unknown than it is now) it's so funny to see these omega-libs whine about "those communists from lemmy.ml" lmao, before July I fondly remember all the lib trolls that populated /c/worldnews here on the .ml

Edit: take this gem:

Asking for proof of what is an open secret on lemmy seems disingenuous.

I think that instances like hexbear, lemmygrad, and lemmy.ml are very bad advocates for Lemmy and will most likely end up damaging it more than anything else, keeping the “normies” out.

They argue in Bad faith, say the most radical stuff they can think of, and purge anything bad said about totalitarian regimes they idolize. China, Russia, Iran, all considered victims of the evil west…

Uyghur camps > not happening Tiannamen square > Just some peaceful protests invasion of Ukraine > NATO forced Russia to do it

Libs absolutely can't stand us and can only ever perceive us being normal as a ruthless attack on their very core identity. Their view of reality is so warped they see standard commie posting as deranged illness

I do find it kind of interesting how every single one of these people complaining about us or hexbear has very clearly never actually listened to anything we actually say. They talk about us in the abstract, as cartoon villains because they can't handle the idea of someone else having a different opinion, or, even scarier, a different body of knowledge, to them.

What's funny is that, never mind "keeping the normies out", libs going on and on about "lemmy tankies" is definitely gonna attract more comrades here, at least that's how I got here, I saw someone on reddit complaining about lemmy being run by tankies and that's what made me decide to check it out whatabout deez

Their constant badmouthing of us and hexbear doesn't really work, because they want to insist we're all awful 4chan trolls and shills, but when they come here and actually look at our posts they see people who actually support each other and try to be genuinely nice to each other, instead of that liberal "civility" where they hate each other's guts and are really condescending, but act "nice" in a really disingenuous way that I see a lot on other instances. (And when two people here pop off and start shouting at each other, they usually actually try to convince the other of a point instead of just winning an argument, and here, people actually change their minds when presented with new information, other instances just try to "win debates" at each other. Pure redditor.)

You know someone who uses gmail.com can email someone who uses aol.com? That works because email isn’t a service that exists on a single server somewhere. Instead, email uses a protocol, a way that computers have agreed to talk to each other. This works because both servers have their own copies of the email, which they do their best to keep in sync with one another.

Lemmy, Mastodon, Peertube, etc are all pieces of software that do the same thing (keeping multiple copies of something in sync) except instead of message threads, the thing it’s keeping in sync is social media posts.

You don’t need to know the specifics of how federation works because that’s getting into the specifics of how the servers have agreed to talk to each other. You don’t have to understand SMTP to use gmail. You just use it. Similarly, you don’t need to understand ActivityPub to use Lemmy (thank god). It just works.

Of course, by “just works”, I mean thousands if not millions of human hours have gone into making it work.
