The crazy thing is that if they had the copyright rules of today, they likely wouldn't have been able to used "The Turkey in the Straw" as they did here. The song was published in 1834 by George Washington Dixon, who died in 1861. This would means his song wouldn't have entered the public domain until 1931 by modern rules, however at the time copyright only lasted 28 years so the song entered the public domain in 1862. Disney took much public domain material to turn into their films and then extened copyright so that nobody could take from their stories. Cinderella, Snow White, and Pinocchio, song of their first popular movies, were based on public domain works. It's crazy to think what kind of stories and material we may have gotten if copyright law wasn't so long these days.

Ironically, if you need an example of the creativity that results from being able to liberally borrow from other creators, Disney is a great example.

"We got the approval, the Shakespeare estate is gonna let us do a single performance of The Taming of the Shrew ! You know the drill, start rehearsing and don't stop; we can't afford another 'damage to IP' lawsuit for flubbing a line."
