Can we please stop censoring words on the internet.

[-] brygphilomena@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

I kind of understand content creators doing it because they want that sweet, sweet money. But when I see people who are not getting paid ad revenue censor themselves so whatever social media platform they are on can make more money something is very wrong.

Of f**king course no.

[-] Electricblush@lemmy.world 49 points 1 year ago

It has its own terms for a very good reason.

It's relative to the boat, so that if you are standing on deck and looking back everyone knows what you mean and not if you are talking about your reative left or the boats.

[-] Ultraviolet@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Port was also initially Larboard, but it turns out when shouting a direction from the other side of a boat, having two similar sounding terms for opposite directions often results in crashing said boat, so it was changed in the mid 1800s.

[-] ThatWeirdGuy1001@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 year ago

So you just collectively agree that left is the ships left while you're on the ship.

Problem solved.

[-] Nougat@kbin.social 16 points 1 year ago

The left is always the ship's left, just like the left side of a car is always the left side of a car.

[-] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Except we say drivers/passengers side when referring to the side of a car. People dislike port because they can't remember it from lack of use. Insecurities cause this whole discussion.

I don't use it often at all, but when I was 6, I just remembered left/port had 4 letters and haven't forgotten yet. Some day I might, but me forgetting doesn't mean I should ask everyone else to stop using language.

E.g. I have a plethora of grapes. We should stop using the term plethora because they could just say "a lot."

[-] dufkm@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

E.g. I have a plethora of grapes. We should stop using the term plethora because they could just say “a lot.”

That reminds me of the old joke:

A widow was holding a funeral for her husband, when a man asked if he could say a word. "Of course" said the widow, so he stood up and exclaimed "plethora!". The widow replied "thanks, that means a lot".

[-] Rusty@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

Does drivers/passenger side work when you don't know if you are speaking with British or American people?

The way I taught myself to remember is "starboard" has more "R"s in it, so that means "right".

[-] Afrazzle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Also if you always say "left and right" instead of "right and left" (which must english speakers probably do) you can remember that port and starboard are the same order.

Theaters just call it stage right and stage left

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Ok so are we settling on bow left and bow right then?

[-] blanketswithsmallpox@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, the enemies gate is always down. My body's left is always my body's left. Just like the ships left is always left from the front lol.

Ain't nobody riding around in a intertube ship lol.

[-] dx1@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Let's name them something edgy and disruptive. How about calling all four sides "X".

[-] TimeNaan@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

All sides should be called Alladeen.

[-] danhab99@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

"attention all hands, pirates off the aladeen"

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

Rename all 4 points

Triangle Circle X Square

[-] Nougat@kbin.social 18 points 1 year ago

And what the fuck kind of speed measurement is "knots"?

[-] rooster_butt@lemm.ee 26 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It's based on nautical miles which are in turn 1/60th of a latitude degree. It's meant for easy conversions when navigating using map coordinates.

[-] Kichae@kbin.social 15 points 1 year ago
[-] pontata@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I'm knot so sure about that

You know what they say... If you don't know how to tie a word, tie many.

[-] portside@monyet.cc 15 points 1 year ago

Hey watch your mouth, you can't just erase me!

[-] Imgonnatrythis@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

As. Long as no one fucks with poop deck. Don't you take my poop deck away.

Yeah, the theater gets stage left and stage right, so why not.

[-] PeterPoopshit@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Port has the same number of letters in it as "left". Starboard does not have the same number of letters in it as the word left.

I can never remember which is which. Is there some easy way to recall which is left and which is right?

(Same goes for red and green light on the sides.)

[-] sbv@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago

"left" and "port" have the same number of letters. Conveniently, they're also the same direction (while facing forward on the boat).

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago
[-] livus@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

"Is there any red port left?" - helps remember red light is left and green light is right, as well.

Probably only works if you know port wine is a thing though.

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

That's pretty cool.

“Red Right Returning”

When two ships approach each other bow-on (that’s the front of the ship), each will see the red running light to their right. Which if my spatial reasoning hasn’t failed me, means that they’re on the left (port) side of the ship.

[-] HaywardT 1 points 1 year ago

Red right returning is for channel markers.

Red is on the left(red, left, port all have fewer letters.)

[-] Pretzilla@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Red Right Return actually refers to returning to harbor or marina. The red channel navigation markers and lights will be on your right.

And not quite; the boat mounted lights indicate to the other boat who has right of way.

For two powerboats crossing, the one on the right has right of way, and they will see (are given) a green light on the other boat.

While the other sees red, like a matador's cape, which tells it to yield. (which doesn't work for bulls and just makes them angry because they are color blind)

Port ----- starboard

Left ----- right

I always remember that port is short, left is short, in terms of letter length.

[-] Pretzilla@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Red ----- green

Also!

Which side would we tie up to the dock?

[-] holycrap@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Both.

[-] tehevilone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

As long as no one brings up "larboard", it's fine!

[-] ShizuoLamperouge@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Well, you Left the Port to sail...
