Show is Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai - Jellyfish can't swim in the night

Probably spoilers. Last warning.

spoilerHere: https://yorukura.fandom.com/wiki/Kiui_Watase

I did this based on this scene from episode 11: https://streamable.com/oq226r

Comrade Kiui is FtM.

Not only that but his name "Watase" splits into "Wata" which means "crossing" or "ferry," often used in Japanese names to imply traversing a river or similar feature, hinting at transitions or change. While "se" meaning "rapids" or "change" is also another blatantly huge clue.

I haven't worked out what Kiui might reference, it's written in Katakana and some think it's the Kiwi bird. I don't know if this is related or not, someone else might.

and she's always willing to help his dear friend.

she displays as a VTuber are his own.

This edit warring is turning the page weird.

It's because the transphobic douchebag that keeps editing is only changing the "HE" to "she" and missing the "his/her" ones.

Mahiru is the only person with whom Kiui feels comfortable discussing the past without reservation, and (s)he's always willing to help her/his dear friend.

I'm too autistic to figure out if the last line is referring to Mahiru or Kiui?

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 9 points 4 weeks ago

Ahh hmm. That's probably referring to Mahiru? I think.

[-] Edie@hexbear.net 10 points 4 weeks ago

That's also what I was thinking, in which case it should be she/her.

Damn I almost called that out in my post after episode 7 telling people to watch Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, because Kiui so clearly had top dysphoria in the scenes at the motorcycle school, but I genuinely didn't expect the show to follow through with that like it did so I second guessed myself and cut it before posting.

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night has been consistently so good overall and I hate that I keep feeling the need to temper expectations that it will keep being good.

I think it will keep being good if the official art is anything to go by

I swear if they manage to make Kano calling up Mahiru in the middle of the night "just to hear her voice" and breaking down sobbing reminiscing about the time she kissed her after they had a pointless fight not gay I'm going to scream.

Which is an unhealthy level of emotional investment in a cartoon, hence the existing in a superimposed state of foolishly getting my hopes up and cynically not getting my hopes up.

It's like you can't even kiss your really good friend and tell them they're what gives your life meaning anymore without people saying it's romantic. Smh.

Based on the fact that the Nox vtuber character still wears a skirt and stuff I think it's pretty reasonable to just go with 'non binary' for now but yeah o7

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 12 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Maybe! I get the impression that they're in some sort of stage of figuring themselves out. The thing is that as Kiui they clearly hate themselves to the point of literally hiding their face from other people on the street, they don't want other people to even perceive them, they don't feel right in their own skin and the "your body just keeps growing on its own" is obviously referring to boobs growing. So if it does end up being non-binary the obvious take is that they would present as masc.

[-] milistanaccount09@hexbear.net 8 points 4 weeks ago

yeah the gender dysphoria thing is very clear! i dont exactly wanna go back & look at the episode rn but I'm pretty sure they do also say during the confrontation at the arcade that they were basically building their vtuber avatar as an idealised self. ofc it's left ambiguous exactly how kiui wishes to be referred to so i'm sure they'll clarify it a bit more later (or maybe not since queer shit tends to just get twelve episodes :P)

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 7 points 4 weeks ago

I'm hoping that going forwards they end up dropping Kiui as a name and switch to Nox fulltime.

Lol I won the edit war, page locked after reverting to my changes.

Gender identity {{#switch:{{lc:{{{gender_identity}}}}} |Lesbian |Non-binary |Transgender = [[File:{{{gender_identity}}}.png|15px|link=Category:{{{gender_identity}}} Characters]] }}{{{gender_identity}}}

"gender_identity".. That's now how it works PolaX3.

"Lesbian". . . THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS PolaX3

Yeah I messaged Polax about that. They were good intentioned I think but didn't really know what was right.
