The Congo Civil War, or Congo Crisis, was a complex political tumult that began just days following Belgium’s granting of Congolese independence in 1960. Lasting four years, the associated violence claimed an estimated 100,000 lives including the nation’s first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba, and UN Secretary Dag Hammarskjöld, who was killed in a plane crash as he attempted to mediate the crisis. Escalating with the secession of the southernmost province of Katanga, the conflict concluded five years later with a united Congo emerging under the dictatorship of Joseph-Désiré Mobutu.

On June 30, 1960, Belgium negotiated post-colonial mining rights in declaring an independent Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Yet within days, soldiers of the Congolese army mutinied, demanding increased pay and the removal of white officers from their ranks. When Belgium intervened militarily, more soldiers rebelled. Many of these soldiers gravitated toward the radical nationalist Prime Minister Patrice Emery Lumumba.

Then, dominated by Belgian business interests, the mineral-rich Katanga province under the leadership of Moïse Kapenda Tshombe seceded from the DRC with Belgian support. Congolese President Joseph Kasavubu and Prime Minister Lumumba asked and received a peacekeeping force from the United Nations (UN).

The conflict also became the site of a dangerous Cold War “proxy” contest between western powers led by the United States and the Soviet Union-led Communist bloc. Under pressure from western nations and in exchange for UN support, President Kasavubu purged his government of radical elements including Prime Minister Lumumba. The ultra-nationalist Lumumba, though supported by the Congolese, was viewed by Western business leaders as an obstacle to their continued investments in Congolese diamond mines. Fearing Lumumba was secretly a Communist, the United States was particularly adamant about his removal from power.

Lumumba responded by firing Kasavubu as both leaders claimed control over the country, and Army Chief of Staff Joseph Mobutu in turn orchestrated a military coup d’état which ousted the two leaders. Mobutu’s government was supported by western governments. The Soviet Union and other Communist nations supported Lumumba who ultimately was killed by Katangan rebels.

With his chief rival removed, Mobutu pledged nominal support to President Kasavubu and the two led the successful effort to end the Katanga secession. UN forces eventually recaptured all of Katanga province. In 1964, a new rebellion began in the Eastern Congo when armed fighters (“Simbas”) began to spread across the region. Ironically, Moïse Tshombe, who had led the secessionist Katanga province, was made prime minister with the mandate to defeat these rebels and end other regional revolts. The Simbas were defeated in November 1964.

One year later, Mobutu seized power from President Kasavubu after having persuaded Western leaders that he was the most effective leader in the fight against communism. Kasavubu and Tshombe were exiled as Mobutu set up a one-party dictatorship, controlling the nation until 1997. Nonetheless, for the first time since independence, all of the country was ruled by one government.

My boss was commenting that I never join staff (work) socials. My workmates are fine. I just don't want to spend an extra second with people who don't mask, haven't done a single thing about Palestine, and are all eating their dead animals and getting absolutely pissed. I'm not difficult, if they did just one of those three things differently, my feelings would be very different.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD' reportedly has a budget of $350M-$375M

What are we expecting nerds? , Biggest office bomb of the year/decade? To put this in context this is double the budget of Furiosa a good movie that bombed

Also this movie had around 4 massive rewrites and like 1 year of reshots, and the mcu fatigue, and you need to watch an online show (maybe more) in order to get the plot, and will feature a zionist hero that shares a name with a massacre

This could kill the MCU

Taking care of the outside cat that seems to be sick or dying. Gave it a bath and fed it some treats. It's sleeping on the floor of my bedroom right now beside some towels. It yelps whenever it wakes up and I pet it since I'm not sure what it wants exactly. Hind legs seem extremely weak and its eyes were closed shut until I cleaned the gunk out of them.

Hope it's OK for awhile at least. It's a really gentle cat. Just appeared here one day, not sure where from. I think it's at least 15-16 years old.

Is there a good way to dispose of plastic? This shit thoroughly radicalizes me, especially the carbon footprint angle of it all

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

I think there are some organisms that can eat some plastics and poop out less toxic stuff. I think there's research doing on how to make use of them. The situation isn't good but it's not hopeless.

Plus, theres are least some work being done in truly biodegradable plastic materials that aren't made from oil.

When I was young, someone informed me that words can be printed on a page and form sentences, then paragraphs, then a story. Unbeknownst to them, this was an apocalyptic mistake and contributed to my extremely normal interactions with literature now

The outdoor cat has died and while I am sad all day there are likely wicked sickos doing various kinds of latin dance because of it. And the mods won't offer me condolences in the form of letting me get any post of my choosing removed from the site.

I got a bag of sumac flakes and the Middle Eats guy is correct, it does indeed make a tasty drink. It also elevated my poppyseed dressing/pumpkin seed/pine nut salad to the next astral level. Bought it on amazon (it was "the spice way" brand if anyone cares) but I'm gonna try to find it for cheaper somewhere local because i wanna use this stuff all the time. Next time I'm gonna sprinkle some coarsely chopped lemon balm from the garden on it too and it's going to be fr*ggin' insane.

The feeling of combat in newer Soulsborne games has never felt quite right to me.

Take a look at weapon animation in DS1 vs Elden Ring. In DS1, the vast majority of the weapons had realistic animations. Only 2-3 weapons had you performing acrobatics beyond what a normal human could do. Sure there was magic and giant swords, but it felt grounded within a low-fantasy setting.

In Elden Ring, the majority of weapons feel straight out of an anime. You zip around doing flashy moves as a standard attack. Spells also got significantly more flashy and absurd. The Tarnished feels closer to a demigod in their abilities than they do a human. I feel like this shift in feeling has kinda destroyed the whole "overcoming these challenges as a small insignificant dude" vibe because your guy is able to swing their sword like a shonen protagonist.

I feel like the emotional heart of dark souls has been lost in order to create cool looking combat.

holy shit i’m still on one, spent the entire day yesterday doing chores and shit, once i couldn’t do that anymore i just paced around, once i ran out of energy and couldn’t do that i just sat down and rocked back and forth. i just kept going to the point of exhaustion

got up at 4am and am still wired, feel wide awake despite getting like 4ish hours of sleep. i’m not taking any more meds, i don’t care what potential side effects of stopping there’ll be but it’s got to be better than this

Corporate social media is so vile. We have to go see FB once in two weeks unfortunately to take part in buying local produce that only posts there. So today I decided to do a minute or so long peek at the actual timeline it gives you now, this is my partnets account as I have deleted my own long ago. He only logs into it to do this act of eggs and potato buying.

It made me feel sort of physically ill. In this short time I was shown a body shaming pic of Kim Jong Un. A few public posts about war and some sort of weapon systems. A few neoliberal self-gratulatory posts. Several ads with zero relevance and the ongoing circle jerk of people posting "look at how great my life is" pictures from travels or whatever. And incredibly it's like the same five boomer posters doing all the posting there, literally to the void. I bet they don't even realize that nobody is there reading the things amymore, apart from those few people.

This stuff can't be good for anyone. It's working as intended though, incredible brainworms from for example a guy who used to frequently visit Russia and be sad about the misconceptions people had and is now posting russophobic stuff nonstop.

just gonna vent about my dad again on here like always, cw: alcoholism, suicidemy dad was showing me these bruises that look more like purpura on his arms or at the very least just blood splotches under his skin, and he told me how he wonders where it came from. and like. it's from his drinking pretty sure, esp regarding liver cirrhosis. and I told him that it's likely from his drinking and he should see a doctor about those blood splotches. but he ignores me. he just gonna drink himself to death and no amount of anything, anyone does, will stop him. especially when he still refuses to get professional help. I think he stopped going to that church recovery group again to, but that church recovery group is not enough. considering he will drink right after going to it....

this reminded me but a few years ago when his doctor told him he needs to stop drinking. he got really mad, talking to me how like. "how it's his choice. it affects no one!" and "how can a doctor lecture me!" and like. It's. I don't know the words to express my thoughts right now regarding that

anyways like. speaking of doctors, he told me how he his last doctor visit went a few weeks ago, and of course they told him that his liver wasn't doing well. but he just ignored it like it was nothing.

I don't know why this bothering me now late past midnight. but it is, so im just venting it on here because it is genuinely upsetting in so many ways.

sometimes I think that suicidal part of me has the right idea that I need to die and get it over with. because I don't know what I'm gonna do if my dad died. especially with my mom having died last year.
