Go ahead and shadowdrop this you COWARDS.

Map and stat screens down the right side of the gameplay window. Thumbstick inputs for the touchscreen gimmick stuff in Dawn of Sorrow.

There's almost nothing in this that you can't get out of just plugging these roms into MelonDS. Hell, the Definitive Edition patch for Dawn of Sorrow is better, removing the touchscreen elements and anime portraits.

Another Konami L, smh.

I fully support games companies taking down rom sites so they can sell us the very same roms back but in HD for $69.99.

[-] magi@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

That's why I have most romsets backed up to our nas no-copyright along with the romhacks backup

It doesn't even look integer scaled cruelty-desolate but Digital F*undry will still sing its praises lmao

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 months ago

John from DF is very anal about that though

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

Nah he's fuckin' not, he gave the Castlevania Requiem on PS4 a positive review despite it being an utter botch job.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago

That port has an integer scaling option though

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

? That's the PSP game run through the PS4's internal emulator, none of the settings scale quite right because it's a pair of 256×224 games running in a 480×272 viewport, the Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles on PSP itself has no integer scale to begin with.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 months ago

Pretty sure they run at native res with 4x upscaling, but I'm often wrong

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

This MLIG video at 29:20, interpolation on all video modes lel. They did not even try, it's also a mess in many other ways which is sad.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago

Forget the interpolation, the "scanline" filter not matching the actual pixels is the greatest sin what the fuck

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

Yeah it's a butchery, ideally they would have used the PSP source code to port it to PS4 natively but effort lol. Criminal shit.

Is it time for me to become Castlevania treatbrained now? Will see makima-think

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

No, absolutely fucking not. Not these ones anyway.

retvrn

[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

Oh, gotcha. Any advice on where to start if I did?

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

Castlevania 1. There is no other correct way ✨

Other cool and good games are III, Rondo of Blood, Belmont's Revenge and Bloodlines.

[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

Will do! Guess this means I might finally install EmuDeck, once I clear the next few games from my backlog. Thanks!

[-] graymess@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

This is the first time I've seen the NES games recommended ahead of Symphony of the Night.

[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

Ashinadash and Magi usually have great gaming opinions, and when their takes go against the grain they usually align with my against the grain takes, so I trust it. Will find out either way!

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

I am on castlevania 1 team as well. All 3 NES castlevania games slap.

[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago
[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

I like the metroidvania ones, Aria of Sorrow is probably the best of that bunch

[-] magi@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago
[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Gotcha, EmuDeck it is! Thanks!

[-] magi@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

ClassicVania > IgaVania any day, but I know people like the metroidvanias, I like circle of the moon on gba too but I prefer the classic style more because of the difficulty, IgaVanias lack that imo

[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Unfortunately I am mega Metroidvania brained, but I won't knock the classics until I try them. Thanks!

[-] magi@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Understandable, I just prefer how tight the games played originally but I did give them all a chance, and I've beaten every IgaVania, have fun when you play them ^^

[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Thanks, will do! kirby-wave

[-] graymess@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

Wow, what a lazy port. See, I'd love to play a remaster of these games that actually re-evaluates the functions of the second screen, working those features into a single 16x9 screen experience. Nope, they'll just awkwardly squish the second screen in there like how every DS game is emulated. How hard would it have been to put a semi-transparent minimap over a corner of gameplay like a bunch of Metroidvanias do?

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

It was my desperate hope that M2 would have the time money and source code required to do that, but yeah nah it's just Desmume pretty much, lmao.

[-] magi@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

I beat all of these on an emulator last year, and being able to use romhacks to tweak the art was part of the experience. This doesn't seem really worth it if you have a means to emulate already comrade-raccoon

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Fr fr, I played Dawn on my DSi but used the Definitive hack with an ace3ds+ clone, lmao.
