I don't know if you have heard, but Loops.video is a Reels/Tiktok like app from the creator of Pixelfed. I recall it being announced, and checked just now on a whim. All of a sudden, it appears pretty close to ready to launch!

I choose Skynet. Can I choose Skynet?

[-] catloaf@lemm.ee 17 points 2 months ago

Do we get a choice? Because I also vote for Skynet.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

I also vote for Skynet and the inevitable nuclear Armageddon.

May the atomic spark be struck, and spears of purifying nuclear flame rain from above.

I’ll be passing on that.

I don’t enjoy my content being the same format as advertising.

Glad to hear of any federated internet updates though.

Do you feel the same way about Mastadon? Twitter was the "look at me" social media. I feel like you just shout things into the void and people give you points for agreeing with you. Its impossible to carry on a real conversation on Twitter (a proper threaded message board like Lemmy excels at this). It seems tied in with the cult of personality whereas we need to shift to a culture of ideas.

I'm probably just a stupid millennial who doesn't get it, but Lemmy seems like the only really good fediverse structure.

[-] MimicJar@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

Do you feel the same way about Mastadon?

Yes.

I'm not sure that's my reason, but I've never understood Twitter/Mastodon. It's just shouting into a void.

[-] ilhamagh@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Fully agree, I have masto/pixelfed client on my phone but Lemmy is the the one I used most by a long shot.

Idk why it is but on other platforms I feel like I'm intruding on someone else's conversation, but I can freely reply here no problem (to some extent).

[-] njordomir@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Right. And if you say something constructive, we can respond, and if you don't, the conversation branch dies.

Twitter/Mastadon do feel weird in that way, but I am thankful for Mastadon's success even if it's not really for me.

[-] thanks_shakey_snake@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

I feel like you just shout things into the void and people give you points for agreeing with you.

Lol at first I thought this was a direct criticism of the person you were replying to.

[-] njordomir@lemmy.world 36 points 2 months ago

Good luck to the creator. Pixelfed works well for me, despite being a bit empty, both on my instance and globally. The bones are there though and I personally prefer the way it works over Mastadon's Twitterish format. I wish I could use Mastadon more because that's where the mist fediverse users seem to be, but even decades later, Twitter style interfaces do not make sense to me. I'm a smart, nerdy, millennial, who grew up with computers. I can make sense of the IRS's 1040 form without using turbo tax, but for some reason I can't make sense of this horrible illogical interface that millions of people love.

In regards to the tiktok tok style app, I think it'll have a good chance of success simply because it is TikTok's less assholey cousin and even though many people will trade privacy for functionality, tiktok is about due to become a lame, cringe app for old folks.

[-] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 13 points 2 months ago

but even decades later, Twitter style interfaces do not make sense to me

Oh I feel the pain

[-] neblem@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I haven't used Pixelfed, but does it fail to work with with microblogging fedi platform content so bad that you feel you'd have to use Mastodon? Outside of the group/community/threadiverse federation issues in Masto and Lemmy not letting you follow accounts, I my understanding was everything worked pretty well talking to eachoter.

[-] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 months ago

I've never cared much about TikTok but old Vine memes make me wish I had been more involved with that platform. If Loops ends up being cool, it might be neat to help pioneer something for once.

[-] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 19 points 2 months ago

release it or dont. i hate this spamvertisement/countdown bullshit

[-] catloaf@lemm.ee 30 points 2 months ago

It's marketing. People do it because it works.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

We dont need more tiktok like sites.

We need to kill the ones that already exist.

They are social cancer.

[-] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 months ago

isn't it mostly because of their overly addictive recommendation algorithms? taking away infinite scrolling would also help a lot to make it more healthy.

I know people, 40+ in age, who just want to see some fun videos in their work breaks, when nobody's around to talk with

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

People were able to watch funny videos long before tiktok. Tiktok is cancer.

[-] qaz@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

Dansup (the creator of mentioned site) runs several projects including Pixelfed (federated Instagram) but also an AP messenger (which doesn't seem very useful to me imo).

God, I hope so.

AI apocalypse sounds much better than anything the current timeline can offer.

[-] Caligvla@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

Certainly better than more TikTok...

[-] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

I'm predicting stupid skynet. It will want to kill humanity but by making stupid suggestions.

"Hey maybe try drinking poison today?"

No.

"Please?"

No.

"What if I gave you a recipe for poison cookies? You like cookies. Will you please eat poison cookies?"

No.

"Can you build a robot for me if I send you clips from a Terminator movie?"

Which one?

"Terminator Genysys"

NO.

[-] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 14 points 2 months ago

I'd prefer Skynet if I'm gonna be honest.

[-] affiliate@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

my money is on it being skynet

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 8 points 2 months ago

FederatedTok seems like it could be a good idea, depending on what kind of algorithm they come up with, or if each server creates their own.

Will be an interesting experiment to say the least.

[-] abbenm@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 months ago

I think this one is especially tricky because it seems to be all about The Algorithm (I hate that "the algorithm" has become a thing people say, but you probably know what I mean when I say it). The secret sauce that makes it work is the algo, which is very data driven, and how that works on a federated platform I'm not sure.

I desperately want something like this to succeed though, it's exciting seeing major projects taking off. I've been on Lemmy since the beginning, and it is quite big now. Mastodon had a surge, probably the surge that federation needed. But I think Loops could potentially prove to be the most significant one yet. I can't say this model of content consuming is ideal, necessarily, but I think the important thing is showing that it can be federated.

I don't know who remembers the dog days of friendica and diaspora being our only hopes. Those were dark times, and now things are really taking off.

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 2 points 2 months ago

Despite your (and my) personal feelings about this type of media consumption, it's the current mainstream thing and could be a driving force into making federated platforms more visible. There's a million FakeTok apps out there, it'll be interesting to see what happens when a decentralized competitor hits the market.

As much as I hate it, I feel like I need to participate to make sure it gains enough traction to matter...

FOR SCIENCE!

[-] abbenm@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

That was actually why I was initially so active on Lemmy as well. I have been a bit dispirited by pro-Russian trolls arguing in bad faith and ingratiating themselves with frequent article posting, getting a pass from Lemmy admins. So I've been a bit disappointed lately. And I expect they will push into federated short form video. I'm not sure what the solution is other than to hope for better admins.

But that said, it's all in the backdrop, and in the foreground is the fact that the fediverse can be built out over the internet to handle social media and rebalance it away from all-or-nothing death star level control of individual companies. That, to me, is a win. And the only way it wouldn't be a win is if, I think, companies show they are up to the task of containing trolls, and that a fediverse wild west is exposed to coordinated inauthetic activity in a way that can't be controlled.

I really hope to see more queer centric content, and less hate generally.
