Hmm, seems like my definition of "secret" is way different than Bill Gates'.

Glad he donated it.. but it shouldn't be legal in the first place to anonymously donate large sums of money to political campaigns.

[-] EleventhHour@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago

Donating large sums, itself, should not be legal.

[-] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

I feel like a cap on how much campaigns are allowed to spend would be easier to enforce

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Damn could you imagine if the budget was like, $15k?

And like, everyone had a shot?

[-] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Not with the current Supreme Court 😡

[-] PortoPeople@lemm.ee 49 points 2 days ago

We need public funding of elections.

[-] lurch@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago

we have this in my region and it's good, but sometimes weirdos creep in just to exploit the funding or troll on tv when their advertising spot has to be aired mandatorily. it's not perfect, but works.

[-] BlemboTheThird@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 days ago

Sounds objectively better than the current system where the weirdos get funded by billionaires and legitimized far more than the litany of normal candidates

How courageous of him…

[-] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 7 points 2 days ago

Doesn't sound very secret

[-] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 7 points 2 days ago

Shhh, no one tell, ok?

Huh, does this RBC Ukraine publication have any connection to RBC.ru? My disinformation senses are starting to tingle (although it seems like basically all the factual claims they're making have been backed up by other reporting).

e; turns out they broke away over a decade ago and had to fight their former owners in court, so they seem pretty independent of RBC .ru

Founded in 2006 as a division of the Russian media holding RBC Group (abbreviation for "RosBusinessConsulting"), but in 2010, the agency "RBC-Ukraine" left the composition of the Russian holding, and in 2015, it completely came under the control of Ukrainian media businessman Yosyp Pintus. On January 29, 2016, the Russian holding "RBC" tried to challenge the use of the "RBC" brand in court, but lost the case

Good to know, thank you! Relatedly, I feel like a dummy for not thinking to check Wikipedia first

[-] leanleft@lemmy.ml -2 points 2 days ago

it's not impossible to imagine that he donated in both directions.

[-] yeahiknow3@lemmings.world 10 points 2 days ago

Given everything we know about Bill Gates, his support of Trump would be extraordinarily unlikely.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

They were both friends of Epstein weren’t they?
