Whoever the hell was responsible for deciding that Ge and Gi are a completely fucking different consonant sound from Ga Go Gu, my sincerest fuck you. You fucked up big time

Note: I'm aware that this is a problem more closely related to latin languages, where the sound of je/ge and ji/gi is interchangeable (except for Spanish, who decided that J = throaty R), so I really wonder if, in ye olde times, the symbol was similar looking enough or what.

G in Spanish is also throaty R before E and I... Unless succeeded by U (ga gue gui go gu, vs ge gi)

Soooo we kinda fucked up too

(if you're wondering, what if you wanna say gue and pronounce the U? Then we use a "diéresis", like cigüeña)

It's a joke from another meme. There was much debate about how to pronounce gif. Is it like the beginning of give or more like jiffy.

This is a level 2 meme, you have to know a level 1 meme to understand this one.

*rubs forehead*

There . . . is. NO. DEBATE. GRAPHICS Interchange Format. GIF.

[-] Sporkbomber@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

And how would you pronounce jpeg? J-PEG?

Or j-feg?Joint PHOTOGRAPHIC experts group. There... Is NO. DEBATE.

...so tired...

Also laser would like to speak with you. And oddly enough a giraffe.

[-] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I've got a gift for that giraffe. It's a jay-pedge.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

J-PEG

And it's Giraffe and Laser in german, so whatever.

[-] Mango@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's an initialism, not an acronym.

[-] Mango@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Ty for the winning statement!

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

let's check in with the inventor...

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

The inventor of the common pronunciation of GIF? That'd be like, 20 million people wouldn't it?

[-] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

The man who invented the format/word. He gave his input as well.

[-] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Just because someone made it doesn't mean they understand it.

I could draw a picture of a purple dragon fucking a monkey but couldn't tell you why.

[-] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

But I feel they have more legitimacy and say than you or I. That being said, language is a fluid thing and influenced by the masses.

[-] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

You can't argue with these folks. Reminds of when Andy and Erin write the song about Sabre but thought it was pounced SAB-REE so everything rhymed with that.

[-] HaveYouPaidYourDues@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I offer a thrid option, silent g

[-] DahGangalang@infosec.pub 7 points 2 weeks ago
