Basically you want what came before supermarkets
Regular markets
I miss those, when I was small we had a local store that did that for all meat products. You just said X amount of bacon. Instead of buying a million separately packaged packs that barely last 1 family breakfast. Or well, going out of my way to hit up lidl, because they're like the only ones selling bigger packs.
Now don't get me wrong, butcher counters still exist, but they're rare and many are expensive hipster shit.
In the Germanland many if not most supermarkets have counter for meat, fish and cheese
Same in the US... Unless you're in a food desert where the "supermarket" is a Dollar Tree or Dollar General.
Regular markets
You could really order just like 3 stalks of celery? They didn't force you to buy the whole bunch?
Many markets used a barter system, some even used Silent bartering so it was pretty easy to purchase only what you wanted
Half a loaf of bread. And a carton of ramens.
They do sell half loaves.
You can put bread in the freezer and it will keep extremely well. Absolutely avoid putting it in the fridge though.
You can then let it defrost naturally, or, if you slice it before freezing it, take out a couple of slices and put them in the toaster, after a couple of minutes is done, warm, and slightly toasted.
I defrost wrapped in a tea towel on the bench. If you defrost it in open air, I find it goes a little stale.
I'm not single, and I've never in my life finished an entire pack of grocery store grapes. And they are NOT fucking cheap. I haven't bought them in fuckin' years...
Edit: Oh... Wow. I now remember watching a weird movie about Jack the Ripper and thinking "how is he luring these girls with grapes?!" I guess we're back to the 1800's now...
Holy shit, I love grapes. I usually snip off part of a bunch, rinse it, and have it with my lunch. Nice way to finish the meal and cleanse the palate with something sweet.
I think that movie is 'From Hell'
That was a super fucked up movie.
I've got two kids, the grapes dissappear within the week.
Because they are basically candy. The sugar content of grapes is similar to candy.
A half loaf of bread, please.
That is a thing already.
I haven't seen it in my area. I very rarely eat bread, but now and then I just want a couple slices.
Freeze it. I grew up upper middle class, so the idea of freezing bread was mildly repugnant. Now I'm poor as fuck, and I can promise it doesn't make the slightest difference. Thaws quickly too.
I got a standup freezer and it saves me so much money in wasted food and store trips. I buy like six loafs of bread at a time, split them up and freeze them. I just put a loaf in my kitchen cabinet before bed if I use the last slice of bread that day. Maybe my taste buds aren’t refined but I can’t tell the difference. I buy a lot of sliced turkey when it’s on sale also and just put them in the freezer. If I use it up I put another bag in the fridge and it’s ready the next day and tastes completely normal. I ended up getting a really nice chamber vacuum sealer from money I saved in groceries a couple months after the freeze paid for itself. Ended up getting a Sam’s membership and do the same with steak, hamburger, and all kinds of stuff really. It’s just me and my two boys full time but I cut my grocery bill from $1k+ a month to $600-$700 a month, making breakfast and dinner every day (they eat lunch at school). I know not everyone has the space and deep freezers are more efficient. I use the standup freezer daily and I always dreaded digging in the deep freeze I had before. It’s been a huge life improvement for us.
Maybe my taste buds aren’t refined but I can’t tell the difference
There is practically no difference unless you fully defreeze it in a microwave which will usually make it feel soggy. However you can get it mostly defrosted in the microwave, and finish the job in an oven, and it will basically feel like fresh bread
Oh man, I thought it was middle class to freeze bread!
We'd buy nice bread from the store, organic/no preservatives, so it starts to told mold in 3-5 days unless you freeze it.
I do the same thing when I want bread I just throw it in the air fryer for a couple of minutes and it is good to go
My freezer is tiny, only enough for some frozen veg. I don't wanna take up space with bread.
You can ask for this in every supermarket or bakery in Austria.
While this is a thing (I'm from the US), the one I found COSTS MORE THAN A WHOLE LOAF. Can't win 😔
Do they sell love at this grocery store?
Only self loathing.
A half of self loafing.
Half-loathing
Nice. That's a staple in this household.
I make my own though
Great. Another thing I can't do. Thanks.
Samesies. My recipe makes 2.
Round back.
For grapes, since they're sold by the pound you can just take some of the grapes from the bag and place them into another bag of the same veriety if it's too many
I’ve had this idea before. I named the fictional business “Spoiled Bachelor”
A colmado on every street, please.
