Bluesky ain't perfect by any stretch of the imagination... But I'm happy there are more alternatives. Despite some weirdness with moderation I have enjoyed my time in Bluesky so far. And the fact that more apps can be made on the AT protocol definitely makes it seem more legitimate in my eyes. Cool project imo

I was part of the beta testing team. I enjoy it immensely and hope to see more and more of my friends and family use it.

Something tells me that with a name like Flashes, there's going to be a lot of flashing on it

Flashes itself is based on Berlin developer Sebastian Vogelsang’s earlier app, Skeets, his initial foray into creating consumer-facing apps for the growing social network, Bluesky, which now tops 27.5 million users.

While Bluesky offers its own official mobile client, Skeets differentiated itself by focusing on the needs of iPad users as well as customized accessibility features for blind and low-vision users, as that’s one of Vogelsang’s areas of expertise.

Okay so this is coming from someone other than Bluesky the company, which is very promising for Bluesky's ongoing decentralization.

I was a Bluesky fan, until it was announced they took money from Bain Capital last week. They'll quickly be forced into monetization, and enshitification, thanks to their new corporate overlords. Who just happen to be one of the greasiest PE firms in existence.

Don't put your blinders on folks.

@GrindingGears @remington There are several attempts to get independent of Bluesky PBLLC. There is this initiative to raise money for an independent infrastructure and people are coding new implementations for the infrastructure that are less resource hungry.

Do you have any source regarding this? I'd love to read more about it and share it with my colleagues.

EDIT: Is this "Free Our Feeds"?

[–] heluecht@pirati.ca 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

@remington Yes, that one. And concerning the less resource hungry implementations I meant this: github.com/alnkesq/AppViewLite

[–] remington@beehaw.org 1 points 6 months ago

Thank you for that...I'll pass AppViewLite around. Take care.

I am glad they are bringing more competition and I have recently made an account on bluesky around new years, But flashes is not a name I would have chosen as that name sounds indecent though I am sure the app itself will be pretty decent.

Hopefully the first photo uploaded is one of Quincy Jones so we can have Flashes of Quincy

Is something finally going to federate with bluesky?
