Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

While James Ritts, the district attorney of Ontario County, New York, referred to Nordquist's death as "beyond depraved," investigators have since suggested that it likely was not a hate crime.

Oh come the fuck on. He was tortured and sexually assaulted for a month.

Naaahh, they just really cared for him, that's why they kept him alive for so long!

I'm seriously assuming that something this is is the excuse they'll come up with

It's about motive.

Officials then revealed in the statement, obtained Monday by USA TODAY, that the relationship between the suspects and Nordquist suggests it was not a hate crime.

Nordquist and those suspected in his death were known to each other, and all identified as LGBTQ+, authorities said. At least one of the suspects lived with Nordquist before his death, the statement added.

A "hate crime" by most definitions is motivated purely by a prejudice against someone because of their race/gender/sexuality. If the culprits were just doing this because they're psychotic, it wouldn't be pursued as a "hate crime".

"We are still in the early stages of this investigation," according to a statement. "We urge the community not to speculate into the motive behind the murder as we work to find justice for Sam."

It sounds like it's still possible it'll be tried as a hate crime, but the revelation that the culprits were known to the victim and also identified as LGBTQ+ means there's likely more to the motive.

LGB drop the T people hate trans people . A cis gay person can totally commit a hate crime against a transgender person.

In theory sure. Is it statistically likely?

[–] thatgirlwasfire@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes? That’s like saying Black people cant be racist against other ethnic groups because they are both minorities (in USA at least).

[–] nightofmichelinstars@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I didn't say anyone "can't" anything, I'm asking for data. I want to know the statistical likelihood of this crime being hate- motivated, seeing as we may never know for sure if it is or not.

[–] thatgirlwasfire@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Oh ok, i thought you were asking a rhetorical questionquestion.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a hate crime.

The first 5 people arrested were reportedly part of the LGBTQI+ community.

Well that fucking sucks. :/

They can be very exclusive. I've seen first hand many gay men absolutely hate on people in the trans community. In my experience if you don't fit into one of their pre-assigned roles then you aren't welcome. Also, those of us that don't make our sexuality a primary part of our personality are often dismissed as 'others'.

Tribalism comes in many forms.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 year ago

4 out of 7 of those arrested so far have been reported to be women.

My experience as a gay trans dude has been that cis gay men are about as exclusive and transphobic as any other cis segment of the community ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Like the highly niche, and still very real, group of "Super gays" that were born via C-section so they have never touched a vagina. There will always be people who want to take purity tests to an extreme.

I think there's still one that deserves punishment. Didn't act in violence, but acted as bait... Unless that was one of the new ones, bet they were assistants and the bait is still wandering free. Throw them into solitary and leave them until their term is up. I'm not trans, but I don't need to be to see I don't want people that are willing to do what they did, just running around society. Who the hell is next? They already went after a trans person that wasn't harming anyone. Maybe they go after nuns next because they don't like their vow to god... Idk just saying.

this one gave me the creeps
