The latest version of Sync for Lemmy (released March 2024) has a bug where attempts to report Private Messages create reports for random comments instead - it creates a report for whatever comment has the same database ID as the private message you're trying to report (which on most instances will be a very old comment, since there are many more comments than private messages).

So: if you're using Sync for Lemmy, unless/until there is a new release of it, please refrain from reporting PMs while using it, to avoid filling instance admins' report queues with spurious reports.

There has been a bit of PM spam lately; please do report PM spam using other clients, so that admins can ban those accounts asap.

If you're interested in trying other Lemmy apps which hopefully get updates more frequently, there is a list of them here: https://join-lemmy.org/apps/

The fact this is not coming from @ljdawson@lemmy.world themselves is another big piece of evidence of their inability to maintain a good relationship or even just a good line of communication with the community and people who pay/paid for the app/subscription.

I've defended them in the past for falling short of this sort of thing in the past, but at this point it's inexcusable.

In my opinion, I think they need to hang it up and move on from Sync. They need to stop stringing people along. Or at least bring on another developer that can help move things along faster and maintain communication and expectations with the community.

I remember them disappearing for long periods during the reddit days. Was it ever a full year between updates though? I don't pretend to know ljdawson, but they've got a goose laying golden eggs here and they're keeping it locked in the basement.

I love Sync but I'm thinking about switching.

I've spent 50/50 on Voyager now. But my muscle memory still opens Sync by default. It's tough to break what's probably 10 year old habit.

[โ€“] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 3 points 4 weeks ago

I was the same, I ended up deleting Sync to force myself to use Voyager.

I hate to say it, but I've been using a replacement for the last month now and it's the only app that has truly been as good as Sync - Summit

It's almost a 1:1 copy. It will seem very very familiar to you right out of the box.

And yes - frequent updates and it's free

Does it have multi window support like Sync?

[โ€“] Skanky@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't know - I've never used this feature on Sync. Not familiar with it

[โ€“] limerod@reddthat.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Basically long pressing a post, or feed opens it as its own seperate windowed app. So, there would be two or more syncs in recents menu.

I genuinely can't imagine being this hostile to users. If you're not making enough money, charge, or charge more. If you're spread too thin, give up the ego and hire someone to help. If you just don't care any more, let us know and shut it down! Simply checking in on your app's community once every year or so and saying "not going to happen", etc to feature requests, would help everyone. As it is, your app is broken and becoming a security risk.

I switched to Summit for Lemmy it's honestly better in every way imo

[โ€“] heleos@lemm.ee 5 points 4 weeks ago

I just tried out summit a couple days ago, emailed the creator about a feature request, and like 2 days later it was added

[โ€“] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I've been trying out Voyager for a little while and it seemed pretty good overall, but I found a few small things with the UX that made it annoying.

I downloaded Summit after this comment and it really is almost exactly what I needed. Thanks!

I do wish you could customize the colors, though. The few presets just don't really fit my tastes.

[โ€“] dditty@lemm.ee 1 points 4 weeks ago

I agree, Summit has ~99% of what i'd want in a Lemmy client (including a responsive dev). Reach out to the dev and they'll get back to you lickety-split.

[โ€“] plumbercraic 2 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah OK this is way better. I was just being stubborn stuck in my Sync ways.

Good to know, thanks! I definitely reported some of the "Nicole" spam, but I had no idea it was causing trouble!

[โ€“] Cabslock@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh shit!! I just tried to report a Nicole spam message an hour ago! Got a network error message though, so not sure if I caused any trouble...

[โ€“] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Yeah I reported one of those and the mod/admin asked me if I meant to report a comment from over a year ago. It's broken and they know it.

Shoutout to Thunder for Lemmy. That app is legendary and the developer is actually passionate about the space from a non-monetary stand point.

[โ€“] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

While thunder is good - I'm using it right now - it's ironic because it doesn't yet support interacting with direct messages, lol. Always have to login to the instance web UI. I can read them, but that's it.

[โ€“] clove@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 month ago

Ah, haven't used DMs! Still, the UI is my favorite so far.
