From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Hector and others were really bad losses for the Rust kernel devs but Lina? That's catastrophic. She was a figurehead in getting apple silicon working so well on Linux that even Linus moved his development machine to an M1 Macbook.

Linus has royally fucked it with how long he sat on the side of this. Im so sorry to Lina and others who have been burned by this community.

Damn, marcan and asahi lina...

asahi project might be dead in the water now, that blows.

Yea, they'd been making huge progress. Doubtful it'll continue, certainly not at the same pace if it does.

I imagine Ted T'so and dis stupid 'thin blue line' comment as well as him yelling at previous rust devs during in person meet ups was not happening in a vacuum.

Linus has really failed at punishing these characters before toxcitiy killed any rust momentum at all.

I hadn't heard of that comment, which wasn't as dumb as it sounds, though some obvious solutions were overlooked and the phrasing wasn't great.

For personal reasons, I no longer feel safe working on Linux GPU drivers or the Linux graphics ecosystem. I've paused work on Apple GPU drivers indefinitely.

If you think you know what happened or the context, you probably don't. Please don't make assumptions. Thank you.

I'm safe physically, but I'll be taking some time off in general to focus on my health.

i know it's wrong to make assumptions, but it seems that, on top of all that rust/c war, her partner was undergoing some serious problems. it seems that she chose to prioritize her personal life and assessed that developing those drivers wasn't worth all the harassment in this situation.

Who's cyan? What's going on?

[–] GnuLinuxDude@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Cyan is Lina's partner. Cyan is the vtuber name but apparently they met IRL about a year ago.

Aw man :( Asahi Lina and her GPU project has been an inspiration for me. Hope she is alright.

[–] doomsdayrs@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 month ago

I find comments questioning Lina to be incredibly sus in origin and intention.

I hope Lina & Cyan are safe.

"Please don’t make assumptions"

Lemmy people continuing to make the wildest assumptions.

sigh

We're not assuming, we're speculating.

Is this related to the kernel/rust drama, or the political situation in the US. Sure, the drama could have been handled better by the maintainers, but would that make Asahi lina feel unsafe?

I guess all sort of neckbeards are feeling empowered to spew hatred on the internet right now.

There's also Kiwi Farms targeted harassment involved as well

[–] wax@feddit.nu 1 points 1 month ago

Hadn't heard of that, but can't say I'm surprised.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

I left this post intentionally vague and scary so everyone speculates on why

[–] deathbird@mander.xyz 0 points 1 month ago

Sounds like interpersonal conflict. Always sucks to see a productive dev quit though.

I wasn't sure if Hector was gonna quit vtubing too after the Rust thing. Kind of a delayed response as his alter ego but it makes sense.
