RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

I'm so allergic I only experience the smooth bliss of a clear nose when I get out of a steaming hot shower

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Somehow mine always seems to be when I'm trying to fall asleep...

May your kleenex always be nearby

You have my sympathies. It’s kind of wild how we have so many advances in medicine and technology, yet a cold can still knock you on your ass for a week and all anyone can do is some half assed symptom management with Tylenol and Sudafed

[–] Contemporarium@lemm.ee 7 points 3 days ago

Isn’t it weird how once we are relieved from some crazy amount of pain (like I’ve had a few shoulder abscesses from drug use that made it hurt SO bad just to reach my hand in my pocket) but once you get it taken care of or if goes away or whatever it’s like the feeling of being back to normal’s relief fades so quickly. I always wanted to enjoy it more lol. Don’t gotta deal with those specific issues tho :D

I take a moment to appreciate medical science for bringing us H1 antagonists (2nd generation anti-histamines.)

[–] Sickos@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

Oh wow you're right I never stop to appreciate basic breathing when it's all working fine

I'm a big advocate of sinus irrigation. Neilmed has a little squirt bottle that rinses the nose with 8oz of saline.

It really helps with allergies.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Irrigation i think you mean

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

You're correct lol.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

When I was younger I used to snort water to unblock my nose. It worked for a few minutes.

[–] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

If you use 2 packets of salt with the irrigation bottle it will help draw fluid from your swollen sinus tissues.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Insanely, cocaine will unblock your nose instantly

[–] inlandempire@jlai.lu 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's my right ear for some reason

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Have you tried swallowing? Maybe chew some gum? Change your elevation rapidly?

IDK why these help for plugged ears, but they do 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] Wanpieserino@lemm.ee 3 points 3 days ago (3 children)

My nose is lifelong blocked at one side. It switches every few hours. Too lazy to get it fixed because it's a minor inconvenience that I'm used to

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

This is completely normal.

Our nose switches sides to push air in or out of every couple hours. It’s called the Nasal Cycle. Here’s the wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_cycle

[–] Wanpieserino@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago

Specialised doctor ran some tests, showed that my ability to breathe through my nose is limited. Would have done surgery but it wasn't the right time.

Went to him to look at my sore throat, he just noticed that my nose was a bit off. Did some tests.

Had some damage at the entrance of my stomach which caused the sore throat, so I went to a different specialist for that issue and ignored the nose stuff.

[–] wischi@programming.dev 2 points 3 days ago

First, FundMECFS is right, sounds like nasal cycle. Second: A natural way to have a completely free nose for about a minute is probably an orgasm 🤣 not kidding, try to take deep breaths through your nose next time.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago

Think of how good it would feel to get it fixed though.

[–] InfiniteHench@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Well you’d better catch it before it gets away!

I’m sorry

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago

too late, it's blocked ;-;

[–] 01011@monero.town 1 points 3 days ago

You can't use a nasal inhaler to clear your passages alongside some menthol ointment?

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

I love how modern humanity spent decades of research to develop pseudo-ephedrine sulfate to completely cure people of severe sinus swelling and congestion, but you prefer to remain steadfast in disregarding that effort and proudly post here complaining how long a duration you have needlessly suffered, even while knowing you could simply travel to the nearest drug store and easily purchase this from behind the counter with less effort than it took to post here about it.

I am truly proud of you, OP. Keep updating us on your status.

[–] seang96@spgrn.com 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wouldn't say easily... I tried to buy 2 boxes last time and wasn't allowed to so hopefully when I go to pharmacy today I can buy more and not get raided under suspicion that I amanufacturing drugs to provide relief for a dang cold.

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

How many pills did you attempt to buy? Because one of the Claritin boxes has enough doses to last two weeks.

[–] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Claritin is not pseudoephedrine. And while both drugs are helpful, neither will magically make your sinuses 100% clear if you have a bad cold. And actually, IDK if Claritin will help at all with a cold since it is an antihistamine. The stuffy nose from a cold isn’t a histamine response, right?

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

You need to edit/delete your comment, because it's spreading misinformation and it sounds like you don't know what you're talking about in the slightest.

[–] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Claritin is Loratadine

Claritin-D is Loratadine with added pseudoephedrine. People can buy all the non-D Claritin they want with no restrictions.

If anyone here had any reading comprehension, they would see that i specifically mentioned "behind the counter" not the fucking shelf

[–] Smokeydope@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh Ive got enough reading comprehension to take away the key detail that you're a smug asshole who talks down to people with colds and then writes paragraph essay tantrums at anyone who dares talk back clarifying a mistake on your part . how did you even come to the conclusion this person didn't know what psudo was or take anything similar? You know what- doesnt matter. Another day, another condensending ass added to the block list.

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

You build that echo chamber solid, no worries and apologies for the hurt feelings, but it sounds like you will eventually need to get over it or the world is going to roll you.

[–] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There’s no need to be so aggressive. And the important thing isn’t a mis communication over Claritin vs Claritin-D. The important point is that Loratadine will do fuck all for the common cold. So unless you are also having allergies, you’re taking a medication that isn’t going to help and overpaying. Just get stand alone pseudoephedrine.

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 1 points 3 days ago

Sounds like I'm dumb, appreciate the info!

[–] seang96@spgrn.com 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

2 large mucinexs. It was also for 2 people, so if I can't get any this time, I'll have to have my SO get them. It would have been nice though having some left from last time.

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Mucinex has pseudo ephedrine? I thought it was only guaifenesin in there, which is actually and literally not even close to the same thing as pseudo ephedrine, like at all...

[–] seang96@spgrn.com 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Mucinex-D is a combined product that contains both guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine. It also has the side effect of making you so thirsty that you think you might have rabbies.

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Fuck, nice. I should buy those next time instead of Claritin-D

Appreciate your clarification!

[–] seang96@spgrn.com 1 points 3 days ago

No problem! The symtoms were light with it but beware of the thirst. They also have a max version that's more hardcore. I couldn't imagine what it'd do lol

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I can breath through my nose, its just hard.

[–] BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Nice i hope you get well soon.

Nothing is stopping you from taking it anyways to help fully clear the sinus congestion.
