Love how we went from “Socialism is horrible because no iPhone” to “Capitalism taking away your iPhone is a good thing you spoiled peasants” in the space of less than a year.

Capitalists love to unironically call for the same thing that they use to smear communists. Saw a ‘debate’ on morning tv at work about that food prices spiking. The libertarian used the argument that you shouldn’t be able to get bananas or other exotic fruit in Sweden which pulled me back in a reverie to all the stories they used to run about how people from the DDR weren’t able to get bananas meaning that communism was bad. Now they want people to live like they did in their imaginary DDR but with none of the perks.

We give up treats in the short term so future generations may enjoy them in the long term think-about-it

We must secure the existence of our people and a future for iPad kids

I mean, the first paragraph isnt wrong. I don't need a new phone, tablet or PS7.

But the work i do relies on copper from China, porcelain from Mexico, brass parts from China/India, plastic parts from the US but also from Canadia, plumbing fixtures/repair parts from the UK, Germany, Italy and France.

The shop i work at we all pulled 45 hours a week with a couple of us pulling 50-60 hours weekly when on call. Two weeks ago thereabouts, the bottom dropped out of my work. I pulled 20 hours this past week on service calls, 11 hours cleaning the shop, and layoffs are coming the next week or two. This is the first week ive been on call and not had to actually go out on emergency calls. Ive got enough seniority and endorsements that ill survive the first round of layoffs but i am redundant as i have all the same endorsements as the company owner, minus actually owning the company myself.

Here, it hasnt reached buying all the toilet paper levels of panic but its certainly fucking with things already. A friend of mine manages a small pizza shop im a regular at, and they are down to one driver all weekend, down from 3-4.

Its not just ipads and iphones you fucking dingus.

🚨 Treatlerite coup incoming! 🚨

For real, the fuck are americans going to do when the only source of joy in their lives (treats from the global south) gets violently yanked away?

There is a reason whenever I remembered about Roman empire, I think of bread and circus. Remove circus, well I guess we'll see but most likely something bad.

JDPON Don waging a protracted porky's war on the treatlerite petite bourgeoisie.

HAHAHAHAHAHA oh shit

[–] fakeplastic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 2 weeks ago

Well it is true that we overconsume and should rein that in, but taking this position now purely as Trump dickriding is hardly a good faith way to start that conversation.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago

ok but the industries making tablets and cell phones and cars are all predicated on someone buying the latest model every year. so much so there's whole byzantine payment systems designed to entice people who otherwise wouldn't

Guessing this guy has multiple of all 3

i just had a flash of a bizzare timeline where that one ML billionaire somehow turns his 1 billion into 500 billion and just pumps money into the dirtbag left.

he helps fund an underground leftist media ecosystem more powerful then the current right one and some cringe demsoc president is elected and his legions of very online Matt Christman cultists post this exact shit

I milk about 7 years out of my phone. I guess I can save up for the 2027 model by 2028 when the planned obsolescence retires my old one.

Ofc, I may not be allowed a communication device by then. We’ll have to see

[–] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

when the planned obsolescence retires my old one.

Bold of you to assume it'll last that long. Designed to break before you can save up enough for the next one.

Always in debt... Something something company store...

Yep. I'd love to keep a phone for more than 7 years - I consider myself pretty handy with electronics repair, but they're built so deliberately obtusely that you frequently just can't. Parts are often just not available, and even when they are, it involves gambling on buying a part that's like 1/3 the cost of a new phone.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's more so that a majority of apps will straight stop working on older models. I bought a new iPad for a grand parent because their healthcare app stopped supporting the old one and they were struggling to use it through a browser.

[–] SootySootySoot@hexbear.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

Well, given I LineageOS all my devices, this one actually isn't an issue for me.
