While Trump was off in the Middle East in an incompetent attempt to solve a geopolitical and humanitarian crisis, China has been doing something much more productive.

Chinese officials, including Xi Jinping, had a summit with CELAC (a community of 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries). There, he promised investment, various declarations of friendship, and visa-free entry for 30 days for citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. Lula signed over 30 agreements with China. Colombia is joining the New Development Bank and hopes to gain the money for a 120-kilometer railway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as an alternative route to the Panama Canal. Even Argentina, ruled by arch-libertarian and arch-dipshit (but I repeat myself) Milei, was uncharacteristically polite with China as he secured a currency swap renewal to shore up their international reserves.

It wouldn't really be correct to say that Latin America is "siding with China over the US" - leaders in the region will continue to make many deals with America for the foreseeable future, and even Trump's bizarre economic strongman routine won't make them break off economic and diplomatic relations. What's significant here is that despite increasing American pressure for those leaders to break off all ties with China, few appear to be listening - and given that China is perhaps the most important economy on the planet right now, that is a very predictable outcome.

As the current American empire takes actions to try and avoid their doom, those very actions only guarantee it. As Latin America grows ever more interconnected with China and continues to develop, America will grow ever more panicked and demanding, and this feedback loop will - eventually - result in the death of the Monroe Doctrine.

How long before the US is going to use AI to run its economy?

I feel like this is now a very distinct possibility and will certainly have a disastrous outcome. Maybe the empire is really going to collapse under its own weight by chasing the AI crap lol.

It probably already is behind the scenes. Every CEO and CFO and all the other chief officers are certainly just asking ChatGPT to do their jobs so they can focus on important things like doing drugs and posting.

'Recovered' Assange promotes Cannes documentary wearing Gaza T-shirt (WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange appears at the Cannes Film Festival wearing a t-shirt listing the names of 4,986 children killed by Israel.)

Article

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has recovered well after his release from jail last year, his wife told AFP ahead of the premiere of a documentary Wednesday that includes never-seen-before footage of the whistleblower.

Assange is at the Cannes Festival to promote the documentary by American filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, wearing a T-shirt with the names of killed Gaza children at a photo session on Tuesday. The 53-year-old former hacker is not talking to the media, however, with his wife Stella Assange saying, "He'll speak when he's ready."

"We live with incredible nature at our doorstep (in Australia). Julian's very outdoorsy. He always has been. He's really recovered physically and mentally," Stella, a Spanish-Swedish lawyer, told AFP.

Assange was released from a high-security British prison last June after a plea bargain with the US government over Wikileaks's work publishing top-secret military and diplomatic information.

He had spent five years behind bars fighting extradition from Britain and another seven holed up in the Ecuador embassy in London where he claimed political asylum.

Award-winning director Jarecki said his film, "The Six Billion Dollar Man", aimed to correct the record about Assange, whose methods and personality still make him a divisive figure.

"I think Julian Assange put himself in harm's way for the principle of informing the public about what corporations and governments around the world are doing in secret," Jarecki told AFP.

Anyone willing to trade years of their life for their principles, "I think you'd have to look at that person as having heroic qualities," he added.

The film includes personal videos handed over by Stella, who initially joined Wikileaks as a legal advisor and went on to have two children with Assange while he was living in the Ecuadorian embassy.

It also features testimony from people who helped spy on Assange, including a private security agent who said he installed bugs accessed by the American security services in the Ecuadorian embassy.

Former "Baywatch" actress and Assange's friend Pamela Anderson, fellow whistleblower Edward Snowden, and Australian human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson also appear.

Jarecki pushed back on some of the criticism of Assange, notably that he endangered lives by publishing unredacted US documents with the names of people who spoke to American diplomats, including informants or human rights campaigners.

He also dismissed any links between Wikileaks and Russian intelligence services over the leak of Democratic Party emails ahead of the 2016 US presidential election which embarrassed Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton.

An investigation by US special counsel Robert Mueller, who probed alleged Russian interference in the 2016 vote, found evidence Russian military intelligence hacked the Democratic Party and passed the information to Wikileaks.

"Other than from the mouths of people in the Democratic Party, we've never found any evidence of any linkages between WikiLeaks and Russia," Jarecki claimed.

Ecuador's left-wing former president Rafael Correa, who offered Assange asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, was to attend the film's red carpet premiere on Wednesday evening.

Jarecki was awarded the first ever Golden Globe for documentary at Cannes on Monday for his previous work, including his 2018 film about Elvis, "The King".

This year's festival is one of the most political for years, with hundreds of film industry figures including Hollywood heavyweights signing a letter condemning what they called "genocide" in Gaza.

It also denounced Israel's killing of Fatima Hassouna, a young Gaza photojournalist featured in the documentary "Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk", which premiered at Cannes last week.

Khaled Barakat (his organization Samidoun was repressed out of the North American continent last year) had this to say about the denazification in the American capitol:

Palestinian writer Khaled Barakat, a member of the Executive Committee of the Masar Badil, the Palestinian Alternative Revolutionary Path Movement, stated that “the shooting incident that occurred in the U.S. capital, Washington, targeting employees of the “Israeli” embassy, is a natural consequence of the Zionist entity’s crimes in the Gaza Strip.”

Barakat added: “It is impossible to separate the reaction from the broader political and humanitarian context, by which we mean the ongoing Zionist massacre in Gaza for over twenty months — one of the most heinous genocidal crimes of the twenty-first century. It is a massacre that continues to this moment and will lead to further anger and violence toward the Zionist presence as a whole, and toward all those who support this entity in occupied Palestine and across the world.”

He continued: “‘Israel,’ with the support and complicity of Western governments — foremost among them the United States — has committed a series of crimes that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinians, including thousands of children and women, through bombing, siege, and starvation, all amid a disgraceful international silence. Why do some express surprise at the human reactions to these horrific massacres? It is only inevitable that those who sow fire in Gaza should expect to reap a harvest of fire, in Gaza and in cities and capitals around the world.”

He concluded by saying: “This explosion of anger in the heart of the U.S. capital is neither isolated nor random, but one of the manifestations of pain and deep rage stemming from the international community’s disregard for the suffering of Palestinians, and its complicity in shielding the killers and granting them impunity. We affirm that the occupation is the original crime, and that those who seek to criminalize the reactions while remaining silent on the massacre are complicit in the ongoing crime.”

Some positive US news… SCOTUS delivered a split 4-4 decision on whether or not state funds can be used to support religious charter schools. The split decision means the lower court’s decision to not allow this will stand.

Charter schools are private schools within the public schools system. They tend to be for-profit secular schools that sidestep unionized teachers and pay less in order to profit. And this drains resources from public schools. Religious nuts have long targeted public schools because they think it’s “unfair” to have to pay taxes for schools and then pay tuition at their little religious indoctrination schools.

So with China apparently experiencing the greatest surge in household consumption the world has ever seen over the last 1-2 decades and being the biggest consumer market in the world for most goods, already outperforming in per capita sales of goods any other remotely comperable in income level country, how much faster should consumption be growing for China to solve all those oh so terminal weak consumption problems? Should consumption have been growning at double the rate of gdp somehow? Should they, on a per capita basis, already be consuming near level of the average american somehow instead of idk 60% as much? Should they be eating more , buying more cars and smartphones? They are already the largest market by far of just about any product (cars, phones, appliances, furniture, luxury etc) so should they be that by multipliers of 2-3 or 5 already?

Or should they aspire to spend similar amount of money on rent and healthcare on average to catch up ?After all Chinese household consumption numbers usualy come in at levels similar to retail sales, while household consumption in the US is ~2-3x retail sales. Thats because not only ar services (largely rent, healthcare and education) a much larger burden for the american and western consumer but they are also (mis)calculated completely differenty in the chinese national accounting system which is still of leninist origin leading to these numbers above been undercounts funnily enough for china, as are ultimetaly the usualy circulated very low numbers of consumption as a % of GDP. For that and other factors uniqe to China, apples-to-apples, China’s household consumption share is probably 50-55% of GDP, only a bit lower than world average.

Even so ,Is the CPC neoliberaly holding down Chinese household consumption by having it grow only 2+ times as fast as any other country over the years instead of uhhh 4 times ? Where should and would those numbers in those graphs be if not for the missmanagement of Chinas consumer economy by the CPC? At 300% ? At what level should and chinese HH consumption be for it to become a "consumer country" or whatever ?

Interesting interview with a Russian drone developer

Guy's got a particular perspective (small Russian military drone manufacturer who wants to be better integrated into the Russian MIC) but very interesting overall. He talks about tactics such as using a fiber optic drone to hit the jamming source of an incursion, be it a backpack kit or vehicle with the EW hardware, then using cheaper radio drones to begin picking apart the rest of the force. He also talks about downsides of fiber optics - in particular light you can see the cables and track them to their source from a recon drone. You can also put a laser into a terminated optical drone's cable and use that to track it back to the source on the ground. Lots of interesting stuff.

Last night, a third ballistic missile over a 24 hour period was launched from Yemen towards Israel. The missile was likely intercepted outside of Israel by the Arrow 3 midcourse interception system, given there was no footage of a missile or interception over Israel. Today, Israeli authorities issued a displacement order covering 40 neighbourhoods in Khan Younis — an area encompassing most of the governorate, or about 23 per cent of the whole of the Gaza Strip. It is affecting thousands of people and hundreds of humanitarian facilities, including wells, including pumping stations, including health facilities and including schools. Overall, almost half a million people have been displaced across the Gaza Strip since mid-March.

CNN and BBC Team up to Help Bolsonaro - Telesur/Brian Mier

0 fact checking on gossip spread by Eduardo Bolsonaro on visit by US delegation fools Brazilian public into thinking David Gamble had arrived to sanction Brazilian officials

Article

On May 3, a rumor spread by Eduardo Bolsonaro—son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and the family's primary liaison to the international far-right—was treated as news by Brazilian, U.S., and British-affiliated outlets in Brazil. These outlets amplified an unfounded claim that Trump administration officials were arriving in Brazil to sanction Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for allegedly violating U.S. free speech principles.

In a May 3 article in CNN Brasil, titled "Trump Administration Representative is Coming to Brazil to Discuss Sanctions Against Moraes" (translated from Portuguese), journalist Leandro Magalhães asserted that David Gamble, the Trump administration's Acting Coordinator for Sanctions, would fly to Brasília on May 5 to "listen to right-wing parliamentarians and former President Jair Bolsonaro."

CNN further speculated that the meetings would address "not only Justice Moraes' actions but also those of other Brazilian authorities, such as Attorney General Paulo Gonet."

The story first appeared in Metrópoles, a formerly progressive outlet now accused of ideological entryism, before spreading to mainstream platforms like Veja—Brazil's most widely read news magazine. Veja has a 40-year history of smear campaigns against the Workers' Party and was once branded "a toxic rag with an agenda that goes far beyond journalism" by New Yorker veteran Jon Lee Anderson.

Veja quoted Eduardo Bolsonaro—the ex-congressman who fled to the U.S. last month—who said, "when I say Alexandre de Moraes' potato is heating up here in the U.S., you can be sure it's really happening."

While Eduardo's potato metaphor might seem inappropriate, it fits his family's years-long hybrid warfare against Brazil's judiciary, including their false narrative of a "dictatorship of the toga"—a framing normalized by outlets like the New York Times. Yet no major outlet bothered to seek State Department confirmation before publishing.

The U.S. Embassy in Brasília debunked the rumors in a May 4 press release, stating:

"The U.S. Department of State will send a delegation to Brasília, led by David Gamble, Acting Head of the Sanctions Coordination Office. He will participate in bilateral meetings on transnational criminal organizations and discuss U.S. sanctions programs targeting terrorism and drug trafficking."

Notably absent: Any mention of Moraes or Gonet.

Veja buried this detail three paragraphs deep in its vaguely titled piece, "Who Is Trump's Sanctions Advisor and What Is He Doing in Brazil?" Journalist Bruno Caniato conceded:

"The embassy's release does not cite Justice Alexandre de Moraes... contrary to Eduardo Bolsonaro's claims."

Rather than clarify what was now confirmed as a false narrative, BBC Brasil doubled down with "Trump Sends Sanctions Director to Brazil: Could the Target Be Moraes?"—illustrated with a slant-shot, unflattering photo of the Supreme Court Justice who has become the primary Brazilian target of the international far right. The article insinuated "chilly relations" between Trump and Lula's administration, only acknowledging the embassy's actual agenda in the penultimate paragraph—and even then, casting doubt by claiming that BBC "could not confirm meetings with relevant agencies."

As of May 8, Gamble has not met with anyone to discuss sanctions against Brazilian officials.

Perhaps scrambling to save face, CNN and others inflated a courtesy visit by Ricardo Pita—a 5th-echelon State Department official (Senior Advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs)—to Jair Bolsonaro. The ex-president later clarified the conversation was general, focused on U.S. interests in Latin America, with no mention of Moraes.

A May 7th Reuters article published in the Guardian made the purpose of Gamble's delegation visit clear. It was to convince Brazilian authorities to designate Brazil's two largest drug trafficking organizations, the PCC and the Comando Vermelho, as terrorist groups, to help facilitate the Trump administration's deportation program for Brazilians. Unlike CNN Brasil, Veja and BBC Brasil, Reuters' journalist took the time to speak to someone in the Brazilian government, quoting Security Minister Mario Sarrubo explaining why Brazil rejected Gamble's request.

“'We don’t have terrorist organizations here, we have criminal organizations that have infiltrated society,' said Sarrubo. But Brazilian law, he added, only considers organizations that violently clash with the government for religious or racial reasons to be terrorists."

As shown by Reuters, it's not that hard for a journalist to get a quote from a government official. Why would CNN, Veja, and BBC Brasil skip fact-checking to amplify a rumor spread by a known liar like Eduardo Bolsonaro? The most logical conclusion aside from pure laziness is editorial bias in favor of the Bolsonaros.

The Wire (India): CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Nambala Keshava Rao Killed In Encounter in Chhattisgarh

CPI(ML) statementCPI(ML) strongly condemns the cold-blooded extra-judicial killing of the General Secretary of CPI(Maoist) Comrade Keshav Rao and other Maoist activists and Adivasis in Narayanpur-Bijapur.

From the celebratory post of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, it is clear that the state is spearheading Operation Kagar as an extra-judicial extermination campaign and taking credit for killing citizens and suppressing Adivasi protests against corporate plunder and militarisation in the name of combating Maoism.

We appeal to all justice-loving Indians to insist on a judicial probe into the massacre and demand an immediate end to the military operation, especially when the Maoists have declared a unilateral ceasefire.

In Finland news: A stabbing in a school. The 16 year old who did it apparently used chatgpt to plan his violence.

There have been widespread reports that the suspect, who Yle understands is a 16-year-old boy, published a manifesto saying he planned to use a knife in the attack and that his intended targets would be female pupils.

According to the manifesto, he wanted to do something "significant" and "exciting", with the stated aim of going to prison for two to four years.

The manifesto also claims he had no friends and did not want any. He reportedly planned the act for about six months, allegedly using ChatGPT as an aid.

‘Dilbert’ creator Scott Adams reveals same cancer diagnosis as Biden, says he has months to live - The Hill

Article

(NEXSTAR) – Scott Adams, the creator of the ‘Dilbert’ comic strip, has revealed he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. Adams, 67, brought up the diagnosis Monday during a stream on his Rumble account, while discussing former President Joe Biden’s similar prostate cancer diagnosis.

“I’ve decided that today’s the day that I’m going to take the opportunity, since a lot of you are here, to make an announcement of my own,” Adams said during his podcast. “Some of you have already guessed, so this won’t surprise you all. But I have the same cancer that Joe Biden has.”

“But I’ve had it longer than he’s had it. Well, longer than he’s admitted having it,” Adams added. “So my life expectancy is maybe this summer. I expect to be checking out from this domain sometime this summer.”

Adams told viewers that he had been using a walker for months due to a tumor near his spine and was in near-constant pain, describing the condition as “intolerable.”

“Every day is a nightmare, and evening is even worse,” he said. Adams said he wasn’t going to delve into the treatments he had undergone, but mentioned that he did try using anti-parasitic medications including ivermectin and fenbendazole, to no effect.

He also indicated that since he lives in California, he plans to take advantage of aid-in-dying drugs after he settles his affairs.

Adams, 67, has made headlines for his political views and controversial statements in the past, including his support and defense of President Trump. His comic strip “Dilbert” was also dropped by hundreds of newspapers in 2023 after he said in a YouTube post that he didn’t feel it “makes any sense as a white citizen of America to try to help Black citizens anymore,” and called Black Americans a “hate group.” His comments came in response to a Rasmussen poll that said 26% of Black respondents felt it wasn’t “OK to be white,” but Adams later claimed his statements were taken out of context, and that he was “intentionally” trying to be controversial.

Adams, in his post on Rumble, shared words of support for former President Biden.

“I’d like to extend my respect and compassion and sympathy for the ex-president and his family, because they’re going to be going through an especially tough time,” he said.

Adams also said it was “hard to watch” Biden’s online critics show him no sympathy, and suggested he expected to face the same treatment from his own critics.

“All of my enemies — in other words, people who are Democrats, mostly — are going to come after me pretty hard,” he claimed.

Biden, 82, was diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer on Friday, his office revealed over the weekend. One of the most common forms of cancer to afflict men in the U.S., prostate cancer is treatable, but survival rates fall dramatically if the cancer has metastasized, according to the American Cancer Society.

Ok I need to know, why does pretty much every country go out their way to kiss zionist ass? From the gulf states to Vietnam and China, why is international politics so weak to try to do anything to barely slap "Israel"s hand? Serious, not shitposts.

Its mind baffling, it goes outside any logic or reason and I would even consider it against materialism. It's like giving reason to all right wing talks about zionist control over the world lmfao.

As Trump had a press conference about the "Golden Dome", the US Military received it's first radar for the Golden Dome project a few days ago: an upgraded AN/TPY-2 radar with a Gallium Nitride (GaN) front-end. Radars, unlike logical processors in consumer electronics, are one of the areas where GaN is actually highly useful

US takes delivery of first upgraded AN/TPY-2 radar

The new version of AN/TPY-2 has a longer range and can provide targeting coordinates to other missile defense interceptors beyond just the Army’s THAAD batteries, Jon Norman, Raytheon’s vice president for Air and Space Defense Systems Requirements and Capabilities, told Breaking Defense.

“What the TPY-2 does now, with the Gallium Nitride front-end in it, is it can see things twice as far, so we can make that command and control decision a lot earlier on which effector to use, whether it’s an SM series or it’s a Patriot, or it’s a THAAD,” he said.

The radar can be deployed as a standalone, mobile unit rather than being directly wired into a THAAD battery, Norman explained, which positions it as a potential contribution to President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome plan to create a comprehensive missile shield for the US homeland.

Double the range means a 6000km range, and given the inverse square law, much more power and target tracking capabilities at closer ranges, differentiating the target from decoys much sooner.

“If they have anything else falling off, you can discriminate very accurately and say, ‘This is the warhead. This is what we need to shoot. All the other stuff is just junk. It’s like litter on the road, so don’t waste the missile on the junk. Hit the thing that we want to hit,” he said.

The upgraded AN/TPY-2 can now “detect these very, very small targets, and you can detect them at the separation when the booster separates from the warhead,” he said, adding that with the longer range “we can shoot sooner, and we can hit it before it starts maneuvering.”

That last paragraph is what the US Navy was doing to ballistic missiles launched from Yemen towards Israel when they had the opportunity and SM-3s to spare. Early midcourse phase or late boost phase intercepts. A recent Senate meeting revealed that the US had fired "dozens" of SM-3s at missiles from Yemen. I came to this conclusion very early on in the US bombing campaign against Yemen. Now imagine the US doing the same thing, but to hypothetical Chinese or Russian ICBMs that would fly over the Pacific towards the USA... Place a GaN front-end AN/TPY-2 radar in East Asia, and some US Navy missile destroyers armed with SM-3s in the West Pacific, or an AEGIS Ashore facility in Guam, and this is possible with the massive increase in range and power of the upgraded AN/TPY-2.

China and Russia have said as much in a joint statement, that this aspect of the "Golden Dome" undermines deterrence and makes arms control and treaties like the previous INF treaty impossible:

Deeply destabilizing in nature is also the recently announced “Golden (Iron) Dome for America”, a large-scale program designed to establish unconstrained, global, deeply layered and multi-domain missile defense system to protect against any missile threats, including all types of missiles from “peer and near-peer adversaries”. First of all, this means a complete and ultimate rejection to recognize the existence of the inseparable interrelationship between strategic offensive arms and strategic defensive arms, which is one of the central and fundamental principles of maintaining global strategic stability. The project also provides additional impetus to the further development of kinetic and non-kinetic means providing for the left-of-launch defeat of missile weapons and the infrastructure that supports their employment.

i will break fedcobin in half i swear to god:

https://jacobin.com/2025/05/materialism-socialism-democracy-left-wing

like largely, on concrete paragraphs, the article is more good than bad (the author is dodgy in other ways, but not here), yet manages to completely substitute social materialism for economic agents framework in marxism.
