I got called from a cold caller related to a Costco compo I entered, fair enough, I've set myself up this.

But they call me on a Friday an hour before lunch (AKA everyone offloading responsibility before the weekend mode a bank holiday one at that :/ ) and when I explained this and suggested sending an email they just carried on as if it didn't matter.

I don't do well with cold callers. You're already getting my manager tone, but to further disrespect my time rather than asking when would be a good time to call back or using something less invasive seems baffling to me if you want a sale.

Canadian response, "I'm not interested." Hangs up.

The vindictive American in me always feigns interest to try and waste as much of their time as possible. When they inevitably hang up, I call them back and ask to be connected to Fatima (there is always a Fatima).

I take the view of the social contract: if they won't respect the rules and are impolite to you, they forfeit their right to politeness back. You're perfectly justified in hanging up on someone if they're so rude as that.

It's also true they're just doing their job, but that just makes it more okay to hang up on them. If anything, you're helping them hit quota by letting them move on quickly. It's a service!

Good way of looking at it

Yea, I don't understand this answering unknown callers.

At work any cold-call number isn't someone I would talk to anyway.

My personal phone blocks all unknown numbers.

Blacklist or SpamBlocker work well.

rather than asking when would be a good time to call back

This is the most British response ever...

Please call me back and harass me later when it's slightly less inconvenient

Yeah, He got my manager mode which was so effective at shutting him down he sounded really defeated, and now I feel bad I'm debating sending him some Guylian chocolates a moon pig card or something

You've said that about your manager mode twice now. It must be really important for you that you are a manager or maybe have a manager mode. Yet you seem to struggle with basic communication and letting people know what you want and why.

"This is a bad time for me, can you give me a number that I can call back later?" If they don't respect that, hang up and let them try again later

I wouldn't even consider that rude on either side of the call really - just business

We have an automated sin bin extension that we transfer these calls to as soon as we ID them as crap. It's usually shipping accounts, Chinese factories and forex these days.

It goes to a voicemail that politely tells them why they are there, to remove us from lists & to leave a message/email if they think we've mishandled them.

Repeat offenders have their numbers filtered to only ever go to that extension. We don't get much trouble on the phone these days, and nobody has to waste their time with niceties when we do get unwanted calls.

Thinking about spinning up another that just repeatedly hurls abuse in Hindi for the scam energy calls, which all tend to have geographically similar origins.

They don't necessarily want sales, they want call numbers. These poor dipshits sit next to a phone with an auto-dialer and just talk to whoever is on the line. They probably get paid by the number of calls they can make in an hour.

My cell phone doesn’t even ring if you’re not already in my contacts.
