Holy war between the US and the Vatican was not on my bingo card, but I'll take it.

Good. Do it. Revoke American citizenship for all Catholic clergy. Fuckem.

Trump doesn't need to do anything, US citizenship is automatically revoked when a person becomes an employee or official of another state.

Even so, the person in question needs to submit the paperwork and pay the $2300 fee for loss of citizenship.

I'm confused, what are they gonna do if you don't pay? Deport you to your current country?

[–] knfrmity@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 3 weeks ago

They'll just keep expecing you to pay US taxes on your non-US income and assets, but if it comes down to it withhold privileges only afforded to citizens.

Those laws are not for the ruling class. It'll be treated as an exception.

Ok but could Leo turn around and just say that at Church property is effectively like a consulate of the Vatican? Like, U.S. law wouldn’t apply anywhere owned by a diocese.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

that would be unspeakably terrible

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

It’d be funny though

[–] theturtlemoves@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

Lol no. But he could, for example, declare it a sin to not help migrants. He can't enforce it, but it would be funny.

No, the land they own still has to comply with domestic law in whatever country it’s in, but they are very large landowners and could do quite a lot with the power that comes with that, and he could also do a lot in the way of “instructing Catholic Churches to hide people from ICE, excommunicating Catholics who collaborate with ICE, etc.” if he wanted to

The irs gonna deploy their special operations units to the Vatican in order to seize papal assets to motivate the former American citizen turned pope of the catholic church to begin paying the 100000% Daily Percentage Rate interest fees for choosing to stop being a responsible tax paying rock for the u.s capital state to squeeze blood out of.

lathe-of-heaven They steal the wrong boxes and end up with a bunch of the secret files that the Vatican has hoarded over the centuries. By 2029 Leo XIV is still intransigent, uses only his Peruvian citizenship (is this decolonization?), and Trump is sitting on the files at Marl Agoe.
