The features of an effective American war (proxy or otherwise) is that it is a) against opponents with much less military power than you; b) with very low American losses; c) with victories you can visibly show off from time to time to justify involvement, and d) with a profit margin beyond merely giving money to military corporations. The war against Yemen was none of those; airplanes tumbled off aircraft carriers, and the navy complained of the hardest fighting conditions in decades. Conquering Yemen for its resources was inconceivable given the terrain, lack of good intelligence, and the strength of Ansarallah, and all that seemed to be visibly harmed were empty patches of desert and civilians.

Apparently, the ceasefire last month merely stipulated that they stop attacking merchant vessels in the Red Sea; it said nothing about attacking Israel. Therefore, Yemen is absolutely free to create a new blockade of Israel by just striking their airports and seaports, and all Israel can seem to do is try and bomb them in retaliation, a futile strategy which has failed to produce a military or political change in Yemen for the last decade when many other countries have tried it. And if America directly attacks them in response to attacks on Israel, the ceasefire is off, and expensive equipment will continue to be lost.

Across the strait from Yemen is an interesting array of countries. Egypt's position in this war is well-known, and Somalia is under a kind of US occupation under the guise of fighting terrorism (Trump withdrew most troops, but they were then sent back under Biden). The other three are Sudan, Djibouti, and Eritrea. All three are increasingly being drawn into the anti-imperialist camp, as they cooperate with Iran, Russia, and/or China. Sudan is undergoing a civil war, but the rebels fighting the government are famously backed by the UAE. Djibouti has refused to allow themselves to be a launchpad for US strikes on Yemen.

Eritrea has a fascinating history of flip-flopping between West and East over the past few decades, but has, since 2020, sided with the East. It was one of the five countries to oppose the 2022 UN resolution condemning Russia's war with Ukraine. Eritrea sends two thirds of its exports to China, and Iran has reportedly supplied them with military equipment. If a stronger link could be reforged, then Iran would have significantly less trouble sending military technology to Ansarallah, and to other friendly groups throughout the region.

Naturally, the lidless eye of the imperial core is shifting its gaze onto Eritrea. Meanwhile, Ethiopia - a country that has experienced frequent conflict with Eritrea - is part of BRICS+ and their economy is increasingly reliant on China (as is most countries' economies nowadays). If a permanent resolution between the two could be created, it would be a victory for themselves and the Resistance, and a defeat for America, which thrives on conflict and destabilization.

Bit late, but did ya hear that the modern Ukrainian nazi government was mad at Poland for publically remembering how their people were genocided by ww2 Ukrainian nazis? They decided to say no Ukrainians did a genocide against their silly Polish neighbors and the Ukrainian national heroes that are celebrated by the Ukrainian government has had their honor tarnished by the Perfidious Polish Sejm, and that the Poles need to remember the true enemy - who didn't genocide them with impunity for their nazi German masters - the Russians

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine considers the decision of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland to establish 11 July as a Day of Remembrance for the victims of the so-called “genocide committed by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic” to fly in the face of the spirit of good neighbourly relations between Ukraine and Poland.

Such unilateral steps do not contribute to achieving mutual understanding and reconciliation, which our countries have been working on for a long time, particularly in the format of the Joint Ukrainian-Polish Working Group on Historical Issues, which operates with the participation of the ministries of culture and national memory institutions from both countries.

Ukraine consistently advocates for a scientific and unbiased study of the complex pages of our shared history. We are convinced that the path to true reconciliation lies through dialogue, mutual respect and joint work by historians, rather than through unilateral political assessments.

We urge the Polish side to refrain from steps that could lead to increased tension in bilateral relations and undermine the achievements gained through constructive dialogue and cooperation between Ukraine and Poland.

Despite the bias and political context of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland's decision, we continue to conduct search and exhumation work in Ukraine and Poland, respectively. We have already achieved practical results in this area, which should be developed further in the future.

Once again, we remind you that Poles should not look for enemies among Ukrainians, and Ukrainians should not look for enemies among Poles. We have a common enemy – Russia.

For the sake of the common strength, freedom and security of our two friendly countries, we must resolve problematic issues together, rather than exacerbating them.

'Time to drop the bomb': Elon Musk claims Trump named in Epstein Files - Business Standard

Article

In a dramatic escalation of their ongoing feud, Elon Musk has in his latest public attack claimed that US President Donald Trump “is in the Epstein files” and that’s “the real reason” they have not been released in his latest public attack.

“Time to drop the really big bomb,” Musk posted on X. “@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

For the unversed, Jeffrey Epstein was a millionaire known for associating with celebrities, politicians, billionaires and academic stars. He was initially arrested in Palm Beach, Florida, in 2005 after he was accused of paying a 14-year-old girl for sex. Dozens of other underage girls described similar sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, the US President has threatened to cut billions of dollars in federal contracts and tax subsidies for Elon Musk’s companies. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote, "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!"

In another post, he wrote, "Elon was “wearing thin,” I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!"

Trump, Musk air dirty laundary in public

Earlier in the day, Trump said that he’s unsure whether their “good relationship” will continue, following disagreements over a key tax bill and electric vehicle (EV) mandates.

"I'm very disappointed with Elon. I've helped him a lot," Trump said. “He knew the inner workings of the bill better than anybody sitting here. He had no problem with it—until he found out we’re going to cut the EV mandate.”

The remarks come days after Musk vocally opposed Trump’s flagship tax legislation — dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill” — urging lawmakers via social media to reject what he described as a “megabill” that would increase the national deficit and place a heavy debt burden on Americans.

In response, Elon Musk claimed that Trump would have lost the 2024 election “without me”. The Tesla chief also accused Trump of showing “such ingratitude”.

Apologies, I forgot it was new thread time. I've been asked to repost this, so I will:

Confirmed Russian losses due to Ukraine's "Spiderweb" attack on Russian tactical and strategic bombers.

Part 1, Olenya Airbase:

  • 4x Tu-95 burning, severely damaged or destroyed:
  • 1x An-12 transport plane burning, severely damaged or destroyed:
  • In this photo, you can see that the 1st and 4th Tu-95s got consumed by flames, along with the suspected An-12 on the left

Belaya Airbase:

  • 3x Tu-95s and 4x Tu-22M3s severely damaged or destroyed, 1x Tu-95 with some minor damage.
  • UNCONFIRMED: Fire near or at the parking sites of Tu-160 strategic bombers:

Total so far:

  • 7x Tu-95 severely damaged or destroyed.
  • 4x Tu-22M3 severely damaged or destroyed.
  • 1x An-12 severely damaged or destroyed.
  • 1x Tu-95 with minor damage.

For a total of 13 aircraft confirmed damaged or destroyed, with 12 of them showing signs of severe damage. Ukraine initially claimed 40, but a success rate of 32.5%, or around 1/3, is nothing to scoff at for an attack like this. There is still potential for more damage to be discovered as more satellite imagery gets released.

I'll discuss the impact on the Tu-95 strategic bomber fleet below in a reply.

Jonathan Joss, 'King of the Hill' voice actor, killed in San Antonio shooting - NBC NEWS

The 59-year-old actor, best known as the voice of John Redcorn in the hit animated series, died Sunday, police said. Jonathan Joss, the voice actor best known as John Redcorn from "King of the Hill," was killed in a San Antonio shooting on Sunday, police said.

A suspect, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, was taken into custody and booked on a murder charge, the San Antonio Police Department said.

Officers were dispatched to Dorsey Drive around 7 p.m. Sunday for a shooting and arrived to find the actor, whose legal name is Jonathan Joss Gonzales, near the roadway after he was shot, police said. Authorities attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived and pronounced Joss, 59, dead.

Joss was the voice of John Redcorn in the Fox animated series from seasons 2 through 13. John Redcorn was a “New Age healer” and masseur, who was always addressed by his full name or "Mr. Redcorn."

A new season of "King of the Hill" revival is set to debut on Hulu in August. In a credit sequence shared Friday, John Redcorn is seen driving by in his classic tan Jeep.

Joss also played Ken Hotate in "Parks and Recreation" and had roles in "Tulsa King" and the 2016 remake of "The Magnificent Seven." His most recent acting credit was in 2023 for voicing a character in the "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty" video game.

Joss' family home in San Antonio was destroyed in a fire in January. An online fundraiser stated three of his dogs had been killed in the fire and raised more than $10,000. Joss told local reporters then that he did not have a job. Representatives and family of Joss could not immediately be reached for comment

As per his husband on facebook:

Statement from Tristan Kern de Gonzales

Husband of Jonathan Joss

My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done.

Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic.

When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw.

While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired.

Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.

Jonathan is my husband. He gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get. We were newlyweds. We picked Valentines Day. We were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future.

He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other.

I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved.

To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family.

My focus now is on protecting Jonathan’s legacy and honoring the life we built together.

If your concern is how someone coped with trauma or how loudly they speak when recounting injustice and being ignored by authorities then you never truly cared about my husband.

Jonathan saved my life. I will carry that forward. I will protect what he built.

-- Tristan Kern de Gonzales

New Musk tweet:

Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?

Would he himself do it and if so would it actually break the 2 party system this time like Reform (but less successful)? Obviously you can't expect Mr "big things coming" to follow through on anything though.

Competitive 3 way races where democrats get 3rd place are probably easier for a socialist party to surpass them though.

Russia is in the process of launching potentially the biggest Geran/Shahed one way attack drone attack of the entire war so far. There are currently around 100 Geran/Shahed drones in Ukrainian airspace, according to posts over the last 45 minutes. Long night of attacks incoming, anyone in the area and vicinity of Ukraine should be prepared to seek shelter. 600 Shahed/Geran drones are expected to be launched over the entire night and early morning.

Ukraine air raids altert telegram channel

AMK mapping telegram channel, provides English translation of Russian and Ukrainian sources

Russian strategic bombers are now airborne, 5 Tu-95MS and 4 Tu-22M3. Each Tu-95 can carry a maximum of 8 Kh-101 subsonic low observable low altitude cruise missiles, and each Tu-22M3 can carry 3 supersonic Kh-32/22 supersonic high altitude cruise missiles. 3 Russian guided missile frigates are also present in the Black Sea, each can carry 8 3M14T Kalibr subsonic low altitude cruise missiles. This means that a maximum volley of 76 cruise missiles (40 Kh-101, 12 Kh-32/22, 24 3M14T Kalibr) is possible, although this is highly unlikely. More Geran/Shahed launches hsve also taken place.

Russia just lobbed 4 Kh-32/22 supersonic cruise missiles at Snake island. The Tu-22M3s are now going back to their bases, Kh-32/22 attacks over for the night, it was one missile per plane. As expected, aircraft are not carrying maximum loads. Don't know exactly why Snake island was hit by these missiles again, Russia did the exact same thing about a year ago. This was followed up by 2 Kh-31P anti radiation missiles targeting Teplodar, Odesa. So by best guess is that this was a preliminary strike to take out air defence systems and radars stationed at Snake Island and Teplodar before an attack on Odesa, which may come in the next few hours. Another guess is that the Kh-32/22s hit the oil facilities/platforms near Snake Island.

All 5 Tu-95MS bombers just conducted launch maneuvers for launching Kh-101 cruise missiles. Unknown if real or simulated launches at this time.

Second launch maneuver by the Tu-95s, and around 20 ballistic missiles were just launched at Ukraine over the last half hour, including Kinzhal air launched ballistic missiles from MiG-31K aircraft, and Iskander-M ground launched ballistic missiles. The first Kh-101 missiles are currently flying over Belarus to avoid Ukrainian airspace.

Yemen’s Armed Forces have again targeted the Israeli regime’s busiest airport in continuation of Sana’a’s aerial blockade against the regime, this time striking the facility with two armed drones.

The servicemen announced the development through a statement on Wednesday, identifying the target in question as the Ben Gurion airport, and the unmanned aerial vehicles used to strike it as “Yaffa” drones.

The operation, the statement added, “successfully achieved its objective.”

Israel raises record $5bn in bond sales to US investors as Gaza genocide strains economy

Israel has raised a record $5 billion through Israel Bonds, a US-based broker-dealer, to help finance its ongoing war on Palestinians in Gaza, marking a surge in foreign support for the country’s economy despite mounting concerns over domestic fiscal sustainability.

Since the start of the war, Israel has spent some $67 billion to destroy Gaza and slaughter some 110,000 Palestinians, an estimated 80 percent civilians. US taxpayers provided Israel with nearly $18 billion in military aid during the first year of the war alone, according to the Costs of War Project at Brown University.

Israel’s war-related spending has ballooned, leading to a record government borrowing of nearly $76 billion last year. While most of Israel’s debt is raised in the local bond market, international placements and Israel Bonds play a vital supplementary role. US states such as New York, Texas, Ohio, and Florida, particularly Palm Beach County, its largest single investor at $700 million, are among the most prominent backers.

But even as capital flows in, experts have warned about the war’s long-term economic toll. Karnit Flug, a former Governor of the Bank of Israel and a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute, stated this week that increased war spending threatens to collapse essential public services, including hospitals, schools, and public transportation. Speaking ahead of the Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economy and Society, Flug cautioned that the current path is unsustainable. “Without changes in the government’s course of budget policy and without internalizing the potential snowball effect of sanctions and restrictions, Israel will find itself on a very risky path,” she said.

As taxes rise and public services deteriorate, she warned that the burden is falling disproportionately on high-productivity, tax-paying Israelis—many of whom are the most mobile and capable of leaving the country. Flug urged the government to reassess its budget priorities and reduce dependence on wartime borrowing, citing Israel’s heavy reliance on human capital and infrastructure for future growth.

Netanyahu’s ultra-Orthodox partners move ahead with Knesset dissolution plan

Ultra-Orthodox (Haredim) Israeli parties in Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition said on 6 June that they are moving forward with an effort to dissolve the Knesset over the government’s failure to pass a law exempting members of the Haredi community from military service.

On Thursday, Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara announced that the army will issue over 50,000 conscription orders to ultra-Orthodox students next month, further fueling outrage across the Haredi community. The attorney general said the matter of drafting ultra-Orthodox into the army “is not progressing sufficiently, as the army urgently needs new recruits, which requires imposing personal sanctions on draft evaders,” according to Israel’s Broadcasting Corporation (KAN).

Ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews of military age have been able to avoid compulsory enlistment into the army for decades by enrolling in yeshivas (religious schools) and obtaining repeated one-year service deferrals until they reach the age of military exemption. Since the war in Gaza began, a manpower crisis plaguing the army has compelled the government to move forward with drafting the ultra-Orthodox into military service – to the chagrin of the far-right, religious parties in the prime minister’s ruling coalition.

It’s in Europe’s interest to put sanctions on Israel - Financial times

i found this very interesting article from yesterday from the FT, which in my opinion is a good news site for posible and future policy push by the capitalist states since unlike other media is not too overly dramatic and tries to follow a realist IR outlook which most media doesnt

in this one the talk about the posivility of sanctions by the UE if they wish to act

In the past few weeks, EU foreign ministers have triggered a review of Israel’s association agreement with the bloc, Britain has halted trade talks, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund blacklisted an Israeli company for facilitating energy deliveries to West Bank settlements, and the leaders of France, the UK and Canada threatened to put sanctions on the country. Even Germany, Israel’s most stalwart backer in Europe, is criticising the country’s conduct.

The Bank of Israel invests about a quarter of its relatively large stock of reserves in Europe, which a freeze would make unavailable for their financial stabilisation function and could in time be put towards any compensation due to Palestinians.

The hardest-hitting sanctions would probably be on trade and travel. Israel sources nearly half of its goods imports from Europe and sends more than a third of its exports to the continent, according to its statistics bureau. A significant share of the imports consists of fuels, a trade Europe has outsize influence over due to its dominance of shipping-related services. At least a quarter of Israel’s large services trade is also with European markets. Restrictions on business services and tourism would be highly disruptive.

Preparations are also needed to counter any US sabotage, which is already under way with Washington’s debilitating moves against the International Criminal Court.

By showing it is ready to act against Israel if it so chooses, the EU would show it is ready to act against grave breaches of international law by anyone. Legal consistency would make threats of sanctions more credible; incentives to respect European red lines would strengthen them and signal consequences for crossing them.

I think the issue with Israel may be used by a few of the EU capitalist class (mostly expecting macron, spain and the germans now) to try to justify a push into a more pragmatic foreign policy using the justification upholding international law.

this would let them better their image with the global south who while being mostly powerless in the issue of Gaza are an important current and future market for resourses, labour and consumers for the EU, also as we have seen last month the UE has slowly gain better relation with China with the agreement to suspent sanctions between both (in relation to the claims of Uyghurs genocide) and this could lead to a great integration into the belt and road between the EU and China.

This may anger the USA and Trump could push for retaliatory tariffs but i think some europeans see that its posible to let the relations with the US decay a bit since they expect that Trump's worst impulses (tariffs, santions, etc) would probably be stopped or minimized by the interests of the USA capitalist class who depend in the european market, so they could use this moment of negative relations to get a better standing with China and then when Trump term's is up a more moderate president could likely be elected (they probably expect like a dem) and then they could better their relations with the USA.

I there are some weaknesses and and unlikely situations in this EU plan to move to pragmatism that could hurt or stop this policy, like being able to fully-mostly fix the labour issue, what if they arent able to effectively compete in the B&R market against the chinese or maybe they chiken out and go back to fully support the US. But to me this is the Policy this article seems to push for

Also i think the UK will chicken out for sure, also if you like this silly geopolitics analisis by me maybe you would enjoy the power fantasy by kieron gillen, its really good

The Economist now considers Xi the most powerful man on earth.

How an agonising relationship with his dad shaped Xi Jinping

The most powerful man on Earth had a grim childhood

Full articleBY THE TIME Xi Zhongxun was in his 70s, his teeth were failing him. Tough, chewy foods were a challenge so, during one family meal, he extracted some half-masticated garlic ribs from his mouth and gave them to his son to finish. Xi Jinping—by then in his mid-30s and a rising star in the Chinese Communist Party—accepted the morsel without hesitation or complaint. He took the remains of the ribs and swallowed them.

Mr Xi was used to leftovers. As a boy, he would wash in his father’s bathwater. (The next morning the water would be used for a third time, to launder the family’s clothes.) He also understood the importance of deference, for Xi Zhongxun had taught him that children who did not respect their parents were doomed to fail as adults. Every lunar new year, Mr Xi would perform the traditional kowtow ritual, prostrating himself before his parent in a display of reverence. If his technique was off, his father would beat him.

These stories are recounted in “The Party’s Interests Come First”, a biography of Xi Zhongxun by Joseph Torigian, an American scholar. Mr Torigian draws on a decade of research using Chinese, English and Russian sources, including official documents, newspapers, diaries and interviews. The book is valuable not only for its portrait of its subject—who was a major figure in the party’s history in his own right—but also for its insights into his progeny, now the supreme leader.

As China’s unquestioned ruler, possibly for life, Mr Xi is arguably the most important person in the world. He will be wielding power long after Donald Trump has retired to Mar-a-Lago. Yet information about him is paltry. His every movement is choreographed by a fawning propaganda machine; in the accounts of his life, interesting details are expunged by overbearing censors. There are only a handful of ways to understand Mr Xi, which involve poring over party records or leaked speeches, learning about key moments in Chinese history that he lived through and studying the people who most influenced him. Few people have shaped Mr Xi more than his father. Xi Zhongxun’s relationship to the party and his thwarted ambitions offer clues as to what his son wants for China.

Like many of his generation, Xi Zhongxun’s life was marked by tragedy. Born in 1913 into a family of peasants, he was an ardent believer in communism from a young age. His belief strengthened in his adolescent years, he said, as he witnessed “the tragic mistreatment of the labouring people”. He took part in violent student protests in 1928 and was imprisoned by the then anti-communist authorities. Xi Zhongxun’s parents died when he was a teenager: the result, he thought, of the stress caused by his jailing. Two of his sisters died of hunger.

After the civil war, Xi Zhongxun rose fast through the party’s ranks and “entered the very top echelon of the government”, Mr Torigian writes. Then, in 1962, he was purged by Mao Zedong for supporting the publication of a novel Mao considered subversive. Four years later, China’s paranoid dictator launched the Cultural Revolution, unleashing frenzied gangs who killed between 500,000 and 2m people and displaced many more. Xi Zhongxun was kidnapped, held in solitary confinement and tortured. Around 20,000 people were targeted for having supported Xi Zhongxun, the author estimates, and at least 200 “were beaten to death, driven mad or seriously injured”.

His family suffered, too. They were forced to denounce Xi Zhongxun; one of his daughters committed suicide. A teenager at the time, Mr Xi was branded a “capitalist roader” (ie, a traitor) because of his father’s disgrace. On one occasion the young Mr Xi was forced to wear a heavy steel cap and subjected to public humiliation. A crowd ridiculed him, shouting slogans including “Down with Xi Jinping.” His mother joined in the jeering.

Mr Xi was thrown in prison, where he slept on an icy floor during the winter. “My entire body was covered in lice,” he wrote. One time, Mr Xi managed to escape and make his way home. He begged his mother for some food. Not only did she refuse, she also reported him to the authorities, fearful that she would be arrested otherwise. Crying, Mr Xi ran out into the rain.

What doesn’t kill you

The anguish did not stop there. In 1969, aged 15, Mr Xi was “sent down” to the countryside with millions of other young people exiled from the cities. He lived in a cave in a desolate part of the country, where girls were sold into marriage for a dowry calculated by their weight. “Even if you do not understand, you are forced to understand,” he later recalled of that time. “It forces you to mature earlier.”

Why did both men stay committed to a party that had caused them so much pain? Mr Torigian suggests the answer may lie in “What Is to Be Done?”, a novel of 1863 by Nikolai Chernyshevsky, a Russian journalist. In the story a young man named Rakhme sleeps on a bed of nails to strengthen his will. Mr Xi imagined that he was Rakhme as he endured those cold floors, lice, rainstorms and blizzards. Both father and son may have been influenced by a Bolshevik political culture that glamorised “forging”—the idea that suffering strengthens your willpower and dedication to the cause.

Throughout his life, Mr Xi has been loyal to two groups that demand absolute obedience: the family and the party. Both were often “unfairly” strict, Mr Xi has said, yet this did not dent his loyalty. Mr Torigian shows how Mr Xi balances dedication and realism. “If I were born in the United States, I would not join the Communist Party of the United States. I would join the Democratic Party or Republican Party,” Mr Xi once told Abe Shinzo, Japan’s prime minister at the time. Abe concluded that Mr Xi joined the party not because of ideology, but as a way to gain power.

After Xi Zhongxun was rehabilitated under Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s, he was put in charge of Guangdong province and began to liberalise the local economy. When Mr Xi became general secretary of the party in 2012—the top job in China—many expected him to be an economic reformer like his father. But the assumption that Mr Xi was any kind of liberal was wrong: he is not interested in creating an open and free country. He believes in restoring China’s greatness and thinks that, to this end, the party should use any means necessary. His experience of injustice has not taught him that arbitrary power is undesirable; only that it should be wielded less chaotically than it was under Mao, by someone wise like himself.

In a little over a decade, Mr Xi has become the most autocratic Chinese leader since Mao. His regime ruthlessly represses dissidents at home and activists abroad; it enforces a stifling political conformity, forcing many to study “Xi Jinping Thought”. Such methods are justified, he thinks, because he sees himself as a man of destiny, with a duty to generations past and future. He often speaks of himself as a protector of Chinese civilisation. “Whoever throws away those things left behind by our ancestors is a traitor,” he told Ma Ying-jeou, a former president of Taiwan.

That attitude is apparent in Mr Xi’s Taiwan policy, which bears his father’s influence. Towards the end of his career, Xi Zhongxun was put in charge of unification with Taiwan. The party had ambitious dreams of reclaiming the island, which has been self-governing since China’s civil war ended in 1949 and the losing side, the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party), retreated there. But Xi Zhongxun died in 2002 with this aspiration unfulfilled.

His son yearns to fulfil it. Mr Xi has made it plain he wants to take back Taiwan. Those who rule China must remember that “The territory left by the ancestors must not shrink,” he said in 2012. When or how he may try to seize Taiwan—through war, a blockade or other means—is unclear.

What is clear, though, is that his family’s suffering has shaped Mr Xi’s dark view of politics. “For people who rarely encounter power and who are distant from it, they always see these things as very mysterious and fresh,” Mr Xi once said. “But what I saw was more than the surface of things. I didn’t just see the power, flowers, glory and applause. I also saw the cowsheds [where people were confined during the Cultural Revolution] and the fickleness of the world.” Mr Xi’s formative years made him clear-eyed and cynical, hardened and imperious. The worldview he learned from his father will affect not only 1.4bn Chinese people, but the whole of humanity. ■

I'm particularly fond of that last line

The worldview he learned from his father will affect not only 1.4bn Chinese people, but the whole of humanity.

I want to say that he surely can't be convicted given that the cops very obviously tampered with the evidence (backpack) when they arrested him, but who am I kidding they don't care about the law.

Am I the only one who has realized the terrorist potential of ukraine style drone attacks? Now that the standard has been set, it's not too long before we see our first major drone backed terrorist attack. I'm going to guess that NATO countries don't have AA domes around their cities.
