Self Improvement

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.

I can walk down my driveway and to the mailbox and back without being winded so there's that. I've had a couple of pretty bad cravings but they were manageable. Keeping your mind occupied helps a lot, something I learned in rehab but never used.

congrats, that is great news and it's really affirming to see positive feedback from one's actions.

i'm on day 6 of a two-week thc break and i don't have a morning cough and the irritability has subsided a lot. i'm starting to have dreams again and i'm getting more sleep (cuz i'm not enjoying late night high gaming) and it's nice to not have to smell stanky weed smoke residue. we'll see if i want to resume daily use after the break; so far, i'm not craving it. it eventually just becomes routine.

It just keeps getting better the longer you go without as well! I had a hard time sticking with quitting at first because I'd stop for a week or three and my breathing didn't immediately get better, so I figured smoking wasn't the main cause (because I desperately craved them and would tell myself anything). After the second month I felt so much better it was undeniable.

Either way, congrats on the progress! And good luck on continuing to kick ass!

Yeah when I quit smoking I didn't hang around long enough to see the lung improvement because I transitioned over to vaping.

Oof yeah that'll do it. Vapes are somehow even more insidious than cigarettes, which is almost impressive on the part of big tobacco

You got this, keep it up. You've passed the hardest part and if you can make it another 9 you're scott free.

Pay attention to your sense of smell and taste as well. It starts coming back in gradually. I remember eating an orange after quitting smoking and it blowing my mind.

for me it was a two step process. first was cigs to vape. that was a hell of a difference. in 6 mos I was able to conquer the hardest high altitude hike/bouldering in my state

then the next was actually stopping the vape. it wasn't as dramatic but still noticeable (although happened alongside getting covid so that might have muddled things)

definitely keep occupied, focus on hobbies (even resurrect ones you forgot about if you can!). eventually you will just stop thinking about it, and then you won't even remember what it felt like

That being said I’m going to a music festival next week and my confidence that I can make it through without succumbing to the nic is low.
