The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I think it's the same answer as for any religion: The holy book is long enough that you can cherry-pick and reinterpret any desired ideology from it, so you really need to look at a specific sect or an individual believer for a question like that has meaningful and consistently applicable answers.

I don't think anybody NEEDS to know anything about Islam. Just as nobody NEEDS to know anything about Harry Potter.

We could cherry pick some good things, or some bad things, but none of that would be representative of the views of every individual.

We could do the same cherry picking with any religion and paint them in as positive or negative light as we choose. Again, the list would not represent the ideals of all practicing individuals.

If you want to learn more about any religion, there are resources available online. I would recommend reading as many as possible to get more perspectives, but other than wanting to learn more, I don't see any reason why people would NEED to know anything at all.

I think people need to know stuff about religions. I think a lot of politics in america are tied to american christianity and you would go bonkers trying to figure some stuff out if you didnt have that lense to view things.

I looked online about Islam and I know a little bit but sometimes its nice if someone can help understand. Like there's a lot of book reading you can do on christianity but if you wanted I could give an inside perspective on protestant sects in the south. I could also dialogue if you had any questions.

Personally, I'm a very curious person, and I like to know as much as I can about pretty much anything, so I do understand where you're coming from.

It could be the phrasing of the question. If you had asked "What are the core tenets of Islam?" or "How is Islam different from (other popular religion)?" You'd probably get the answers you're looking for. Asking what we need to know about Islam sounds like a click bait invitation for hate speech. Much like: "EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS NEW TICTOC TREND!!!"

I could change the title, do you think that would change anything?

Here I'll do it.

Ill just have to think about it more because what you said is a completely different question.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You kept the "everyone should/needs to know".

Literally the worst part of the entire title. People should know what they want to know, and those without any interest in Islam shouldn't know anything.

Not really. Like the trinity is a core tenet of Christianity but no one really needs to know about that to understand Christianity.

The whole question is about societal implications of the religion. If we were all Muslim, no one would need to know anything.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Then I guess I have no idea what you are looking for here.

The word Islam itself means something like to submit yourself, and that is one of the most difficult parts to understand (especially for a westerner), but also one of the most central parts.

Well, I'd generally point to Wikipedia and say that's as much as most people could ever need to know without a specific reason to go deeper.

Really, all it takes to understand what's being talked about in the news is there, plus details.

For even less stringent uses, you could break it down to being a monotheistic religion that shares roots with judaism and christianty and has wide ranging rules that sometimes conflict with other religions and/or philosophies/moral codes.

Hell, most people, most of the time, all they need to know to get through life is that it's a religion. Even that's only necessary for casual conversations so you don't have to interrupt and ask what that word means.

Well, im certainly not considering signing up for any religion in 2025 but what would you say are the major detractors?

[–] FeelzGoodMan420@eviltoast.org 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's a major religion and I rather not waste my life worshipping made up story Gods. Idgaf which religion it is. They're all complete made up bullshit. There is no God, and if there is some sort of God-like entity, it's certainly not the one some humans made up to feel better about the world.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Well for starters (besides every extraordinary claim is a lie), the founder was a pedophile, and clearly unsuited to teach morals.

Islamist Tenets:

Women are second class citizens

Non-Believers are second class citizens

Jews are the worst people on Earth

Gays should be stoned to death

Adulterers should be stoned to death

People who dance should be stoned to death

A bunch of other terrible shit….

But the simplest way to understand it is that Islam celebrates death, while Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hindu celebrates death life
