Explanation: In the US Civil War, the (initially tepidly, later ardently) antislavery North fought to suppress an uprising by the pro-slavery South, which pronounced itself founded on the eternal 'truth' of white supremacy and caste-based slavery. They were crushed, and the supremacy of the North in that conflict led directly to the abolition of chattel slavery and voting rights being extended to Black Americans as the former slaver states were put under military occupation to suppress racist paramilitaries.

Whatever one's opinions on the rest of America's history - and much of it is ugly - shooting slavers is something we can all get behind!

My home town celebrates August 8th because that's when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Paducah KY.

Two months.

Well howdy, neighbor. It's strange that since joining Lemmy I've seen several mentions of places close to where I live, and that's never happened to me even once on reddit despite using it for years.

Something about the pseudo mid west gives people some hard opinions about the internet for some reason, but I also met a lot of neighbors on Mastodon lol

What’s with the Greggs pies?

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Meant as apple pies - "As American as apple pie" being a saying in this country.
