I'm rewatching king of queens and there is an episode where someone said: i have 6 sick days, and i'm not afraid to use all of them. How do you plan si k days? Are you just not sick anymore?

This is applicable to shit jobs. My wife's company let a totally incompetent woman slide for a month of sick time, with an awful attendance record before that. And no, she didn't have cancer or some shit, just couldn't get it together and come to work. For a month, when she could work 3 days a week at home.

I have no idea how much PTO my last company gave as I took off almost every Friday and never put a dent in it.

America.

You have to plan your years illness in advance so as not inconvenience the company.

Yeah, I know...

Canada too. For a brief window of time, the province of Ontario had a law that allowed for a handful of mandatory minimum sick days all workers had to be provided by their work.

Then the province collectively voted for a conservative government, who promptly removed the mandatory sick days. Everyone cheered, of course. Including my mom who voted her own sick days away. Then got breast cancer and lost her job due to the sick days she had to take.

Hooray!

Yeah, more professional companies I've worked for gave between 20-30 days of paid time off a year. That includes any days you take off for being sick. After that you can take more time off but you don't get paid. Fuck around too much and take too many extra sick days and get fired.

Less professional places I've worked like local pizza joints or mall stores will fire you if you try and take the wrong day off, even if you're sick.

What the fuck. If you got a doctor's note (paid by the workplace) in Denmark you cannot be fired before 120 days have passed. This is not part of the 25-30'ish vacation days you have.

You don't need a doctor's note, but if the workplace wants one they have to pay for each one.

That's insane. My gods.

Here there's something called holiday pay, which is extra compensation you earn throughout the year and are given either during or after going on vacation for a month (all while still being paid your regular salary) because, you know, increased expenses during vacation. On top of that you would still be paid if you're sick any time throughout the year.

Some states in the US are marginally better than others. I think they're all bad, by any reasonable metric. I think Texas has no guaranteed paid time off. New York gives you one hour off for every thirty hours worked, to a maximum of 56/year.

It's stupid, cruel, and self destructive.

If someone was sick, told to come in anyway, and they held their boss down and vomited on their face, and I was on the jury, I would nullify.
