I saw a bit of them at the final season of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, but it was clear the serie run out of time, I look some clips of Star Trek Discovery but I didn't like the first episode of the series, so, were can find more information of them? I'm curious about this faction, specially because I want to know how strong they are compared to Jam Hadar or The Borg.

As far I understand, they are like Star Wars mandalorian, they are basically bounty hunters or mercenaries, right?

It changed so much in between episode one and the season featuring the Breen that I'm honestly not sure you'd recognize it.

Your mileage may vary about whether it's better, but it's absolutely different.

My impression from DS9 is not that they are bounty hunters, but that they are isolationists, and are probably zenophobic. The Breen government allies with the Dominion because they see some benefit for themselves. I don't think it's a guns-for-hire situation. It seems like the Dominion is quite good at using enticements and threats to cajole self-serving governments that otherwise wouldn't get involved in quadrant power struggles.

The masks do bear a resemblance to Star Wars bounty hunters. They remind me most of Leia's bounty hunter disguise. There's a suggestion that the reason they wear masks and full-body suits is to confuse outsiders. Weyoun says that despite rumors of being extremely cold, Breen actually has a pleasant climate, and so no one knows why they wear refrigeration suits. But since that comes via Weyoun, who knows what's true.

If you want to know about the Breen the only canon resource is DS9 and Discovery season 5.

EDIT: As others mentioned, also Lower Decks!

There has to be some tiny bit of Breen in Lower Decks somewhere.

S3, ep 9 "Trusted Sources"

The crew of the Cerritos is performing their duties during "Project Swing-by" and upon checking in on the planet of Brekka, who had a drug-dealer like relationship with the Ornarans (TNG s1e22, Symbiosis), discover the population is almost non-existent, and the only lead are the Breen, who ambush the crew and Brekkian civilians.

I saw it, they were in a remote planet for years after the Dominion War, something who make me more curious about the Breen.

There are books where Dr. Bashir is a spy behind enemy lines on a Breen planet. I have to look up the name of this series. There it‘s eplained that they are multiple races hidden behind mask for some reason.

IIRC, the reason was absolute equality by way of absolute anonymity. You can't tell what species or gender your fellows are, so it's not possible to discriminate against them. If any race, for example, required a chilling apparatus, then all suits would have one, although only activated if required.

Or something like that.

I love the fact that I'll never know if anything related to the Breeneverse is satire or serious.

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

I think it’s satire for anyone other than Neil Breen, and to him it’s all earnest magnum opus. The genius of having no idea or skill in how to do what you want to do and also having enough money that nothing can stop you from doing it.

[–] cuchi@startrek.website 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I was expecting about Dr Breen of Half-Life 2 joke.

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

That would have probably been a better joke, way less esoteric.

There is a TNG novel that features the Breen. I believe the suits are wired into their nervous systems and while they have diversity among them, I think 4 or 5 species in their confederation, they stay in suit as a way to unify without embracing diversity.

They're sort of like anti IDIC, so their suits that they are dependent on keep them homogenous enough to get along.

Listen to Discovery Season 5 and Picard season 3.

Picard season 3

Picard season 3 don't show anything about the Breen really.
