Leftist superhero name: The Adventurist

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 21 points 6 days ago

Billionaires beware, you're in for a scare, the adventurist comes, your leg's in a snare, your sins laid bare, your head comes off with the easiest of tear!

DC's been killing it with the absolute stuff, I posted about Batman the other day. This is a great take on super heroes that's actually good.

Just finished the first collected volume of Absolute Batman and loved it. Hopefully they keep up...

spoiler...Using his old rogue's gallery turned childhood friends as another tool he could use. I'd prefer that over him using gadgets, which is so far a lot of what he's been doing - at least until the very end of this volume - but it makes him too similar to normal Batman I think. Maybe it's the people-power believing commie and organizer in me talking lol. But other than that, it's been pretty awesome seeing working-class Batman kick ass.

Just wait until you get to the second and third volumes. Things take a tremendous turn.

Cool, after

spoilerOllie Queen was killed in Absolute: Evil

I wasn't sure they'd do this series, but good to know they're moving away from the billionaire vigilante(as already shown in Absolute: Batman)

Based on my understanding of comics (granted, I haven't kept up with any in over a decade), the entire time the audience will be sympathetic towards this Green Arrow and the subtext will imply that he is doing the right thing, but then at the last minute he'll do a heel face turn (https://redsails.org/the-swerve) and murder a baby or something and the "message" of the comic will be killing people for vengeance is always wrong and sends you down a dark path you can't escape from. And if you want to be good you should "bring people to justice" instead, and the character who has been working on behalf of the billionaires to catch this Green Arrow will be clumsily framed as the hero of the story in the final chapter.

Have you read Absolute Evil? It's just the one chapter and I think very helpful for understanding the likely tone of this work (it's very directly connected to the situation they set up there). Also it's just a good comic imo, though I'm brainrotted.

I have not, I'll check it out, thanks!

It'll be the Batman what gets him when Green Arrow tries to kill Bruce Wayne

[–] jack@hexbear.net 6 points 6 days ago

In the Absolute universe, Bruce Wayne is a working class dude who struggles to hold onto construction work while he does Prole Batman shit.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Its going to be speedy/roy harper i think after you know who kicked the bucket

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Hopefully he's a heroin addict like the original Speedy

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 17 points 6 days ago

Getting addicted to opioids by a Sackler analogue could be a good origin

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Based on dialogue in Absolute Evil, this could be Green Arrow murdering his way through the Epstein files.

I am going to be sad if we don't see him snipe Hawkman.

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 14 points 6 days ago

Can't wait to get told that killing Billionaires is bad actually.

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago

Haven't kept up with everything, but they've been going weird with Absolute so I'm sure it'll stay cool. Or at least different.

Found the killer: luigi-dance

[–] bigpharmasutra@hexbear.net 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Fuck yes. Hopefully this gets the Absolute series back on track. Not familiar with the author but I'm ready to pirate it on day 1.

Absolute series back on track

I think Wonder Woman and Batman have been hitting every issue of their whole run and I'm optimistic about the new Superman run after a bit of a dud ending to the first arc. I just caught up on Green Lantern (BORING) and Flash (turns into a cute queer found family thing after a boring start).

[–] bigpharmasutra@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Green Lantern has been terrible. I don't give a shit about any of these characters in any way. The writer seems to be going for alt-fan fiction rather than creating a compelling story in any way. Flash has been boring but at least the art is good. I just caught up on Superman and the addition of the new character could be interesting. They also spoiler a few other characters in the book, so who knows where it'll lead?

You forgot Martian Manhunter, which has the best art that I've seen in at least a decade. Its honestly incredible.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I gotta catch up on MM, I'm only issue 4 or 5. Flash is very much carried by the art. Flash and Green Lantern are actually super similar, imo - queer stories about people tied into the US security state using alien technology to make weapons with a bunch of metaphysical time bending nonsense that puts our hero at the center of the universe, totally America-brained and not a thought for the rest of the world. They don't really fit the ethos of the Absolute universe, imo, totally missing the class and anti-imperialist politics of the big three. Absolute GA should be a welcome return to what this line is supposed to be about.

[–] bigpharmasutra@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

The story of MM is honestly kind of meh. The art, on the other hand, is stellar.

Great, now I have to find where to 🏴‍☠️ comic books. thanks OP.

[–] Buffalobuffalo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Not typically over here in this community, but big fan of dying billionaires. Makes me curious if packing a bow and arrow concealed for vigilantism would be ballin'. Great concept.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

I would think a collapsible repeating crossbow might be workable.

Kinda want one of these

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago

one of them jeorg sprave things.

arrow should be talking to a new ally, or an enemy he has at disadvantage, and say "let me show you its features"

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

I've been getting back into comics after seeing a lot of recommendations for the Absolute line in DC recently. So far, only read Batman and Absolute but they've been pretty great. Super class-conscious superhero cape-slop lol.
