To absolutely no one's surprise, Senator Tim Sheehy is also credibly accused of a form of stolen valor: he discharged a gun in a National Park in 2015 and paid a fine for it, but then claimed in his later memoir that he got that bullet wound in Afghanistan. When challenged, he refused to release any of the medical records that would prove it.

Sheehy also claims that he was discharged from the military because of injuries he sustained on duty, but then some reporter dug up the discharge records and nope, he actually just resigned.

Oh, and he apparently plagiarized several sections of his memoir.

Just another lying GOP coward.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 131 points 6 days ago (5 children)

Huh, I was told that kneeling silently while a piece of cloth was displayed and a song was playing at a game - was "disrespecting the troops". I was told that not supporting whatever elective war the conservatives wanted to wage on brown people was "disrespecting the troops". Meanwhile, funding troops when they were back home and their service and/or the war(s) they were in were over....eh, fuhgeddaboutit.

I don't think the conservatives really understand the meanings of words. I guess breaking someone's arm/hand is respecting the troops? As long as it is being done by a conservative?

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 63 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don’t think the conservatives really understand the meanings of words

Many of them know they are using words dishonestly. They don't care. They will say whatever in the pursuit of power.

Some are just legitimately stupid and have no internal consistency beyond emotions.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 13 points 5 days ago

That seems to be the academic consensus, with regard to right wing authoritarian personalities. They don't seem to have the inner reflection that makes hypocrisy uncomfortable.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 10 points 5 days ago

I don’t think the conservatives really understand the meanings of words.

They use whatever words they think will get them what they want. Their intent is not to convey meaning or to seek truth, it's to grab more power.

Crap, you posted this in between the time I began and finished posting the same thing.

Hold please.

Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) was accused of breaking the hand of Marine veteran and anti-war activist Brian McGinnis.

During a break in a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, McGinnis put his hand through a hole in the wall to prevent Capitol Police from removing him from the room.

A video recorded by another anti-war activist showed Sheehy getting in on the melee by grabbing McGinnis and attempting to force him through the doorway.

"His hand! His hand! Oh!" one onlooker shouted.

"The senator broke his hand!" someone else exclaimed.

"A US Senator just broke the hand of a Marine," another member of the audience yelled. "A US Senator just broke the hand of a Marine; you're a coward."

Sheehy turned and walked away without successfully dislodging McGinnis.

"Yeah, go f--- yourself," someone muttered.

The video linked from the article:

https://x.com/alanhe/status/2029301477341061613/mediaViewer?currentTweet=2029301477341061613&currentTweetUser=alanhe

Genuine [WARNING] if you are squeamish, as best I can tell, at least one bone in the Marine's forearm snapped, and this can be heard, and seen.

... Right before his arm snaps, (which did not seem to affect his ability to grip the door he was clinging to) he shouted "No one wants to die for Israel!"

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 42 points 6 days ago (2 children)

The video is already removed here.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 47 points 6 days ago (2 children)

... Wow.

You're right.

... It literally worked minutes ago, I was able to watch it on X, before I posted it, I checked that it worked.

Fuck.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 22 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I downloaded it from the top comment on this post.

As best I can tell they are different videos, from different cameras, or at least cut to different lengths, different annotation, etc.

Or... well... they 'were' different videos?

Man, getting memory-holed in real time is really fucking something.

EDIT:

Yeah, yep, in the vxinstagram video, you can see the camera (wo)man who took the video that I watched, the X url video.

At around the one minute mark in the vxinstagram url vudeo, she can be seen on the right, with a phone, dressed in a gray jacket, tan... I'm unsure of the correct name for the headwrap.

Different smartphone videos, from different people.

EDIT 2:

The... the X video ~~has~~ had a ... signficantly clearer video and audio of the moment the Marine's forearm snaps.

The onlookers were generally all further away than that camera was, and ... they were close to being accurate, saying it was his hand.

They likely heard the snap, but probably didn't clearly see the uh, forearm deform, along with that snap.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 6 points 6 days ago

Oh I didnt get to see the one posted in this chain unfortunately so thank you for letting me know.

Oh my fucking god.

The woman audibly losing her shit was the only one with a visible conscience; the whole thing is like a demonstration of the banality of evil.

At least there was one sentient human left in the room after they removed the (also sentient) marine.

I'd far rather be the guy with the broken arm and intact honor than one of the ones who couldn't even be bothered to turn around and who just sat there silently listening, even to his arm snap, as they waited for it to be over.

"Respect the troops" - Republicans

"Don't send us to die for Israel's good for nothing war" - the troops

Breaks hand of the troops - Republicans

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 35 points 5 days ago

Imagine telling congress that no one wants to fight for Israel when it's all anyone in congress fights for.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 42 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Watch those generals. Thats what they will keep doing.

[–] sik0fewl@piefed.ca 13 points 5 days ago

That was the actual disturbing part of the video.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 32 points 5 days ago (2 children)

We have to overthrow this Iranian regime because they brutalize protesters. Or at least that's what I've been told...

[–] Stupidmanager@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If you saw some of the unfiltered news, you would agree. I have quite a few Iranian friends that are watching their fellow citizens be murdered. but we know that’s not why the USA is doing this.

Also, change Iranian to American and I’m on board. Fuck ICE.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 6 points 5 days ago

Finally a sane take. I'm so tired of people acting like I support US/Israeli aggression just because I pointed out the brutality of the IRGC and professed support for the New Iran movement/protesters. That was before the invasion even started, on an article about a student protest.

Like, there's no need to pigeonhole everyone into camps where we all have to choose an evil dictator to support and if you don't support my evil dictator then you must be supporting the evil dictators who oppose my evil dictator. There's no need for that mentality.

Humans were supposed to be rational beings capable of complex contextual reasoning. It was what separated us from the animals. But now we're allergic to nuance, and saying things like "All evil dictators are bad and must go" gets you skewered and accused of supporting the wrong evil dictators.

Fuck trump. Fuck netanyahu. Fuck khamenei. Fuck putin. Fuck lukashenko and all the other B-rated evil dictator proxies who seem to be springing up like weeds. Fuck the fallen dictators like assad and bolsonaro. Fuck all the evil dictators. And not the good kind of fucking.

What's so fucking hard to get about that?

Maybe fuck the capitol police too

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 14 points 5 days ago

Well duh, all cops

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 5 days ago

They must have fired and replaced all the ones who were attacked on Jan 6, 2021...

Also, look how unrepentant that senator is.

[–] fizzle@quokk.au 30 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Fuck thats horrifying.

What are the chances this guy can sue?

Edit: also what was he trying to say before they grabbed him? He said no one wants to die for israel at the end right?

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 12 points 5 days ago

Sue successfully? Probably slim, but there's a chance, seeing as it could be brought in the district of columbia.

Personal opinion? Fuck the entire body of sitting senators and representatives right now. If we had elected representatives who would hold their fellows accountable when they propose insane, or regressive, or asshole spewed, or corporate fucked legislation (and you can imagine whatever you'd like for how they could hold them accountable), then we would have long ago run out of or stopped sending pieces of shit in. They can all sit there and take the interruption that this marine and people like him bring to their 'business' or 'work' as congressmen. Removing him is uncalled for and they deserve every bit of their power and influence (money) being removed from them!

Legalish (I'm no lawyer, obviously) opinion? The marine was interrupting a government meeting, which means he was not welcome any longer in the building/space where the meeting was taking place, and when you are not welcome in a space the people who are allowed to be in that space can use force to remove you from said space if you do not leave (roughly... there's obviously a lot more to it than that, especially in government settings). The individuals involved in the melee here weren't using anything besides pushing/pulling, so it's unlikely you'd see much success with an 'excessive force' lawsuit. I think if they had used a taser, or a baton, or even pepper spray there would be a good, strong case to be made, because he wasn't doing anything but trying to not be moved and it would be pretty apparent to a jury that there was no call for any of those. Even punches or strikes of some kind would be more likely to win... but you'd have to make your case in front of a very sympathetic jury for what we saw to go very far in an excessive force case.

[–] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 31 points 6 days ago

You will die for zionism and you will be happy

[–] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 24 points 6 days ago

I don't CARE if we have to Eliminate your Benefits Send you to War or BREAK YOUR ARM HERE we're GOING to FUCK our Troops!

-LITERALLY Republicans!

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Between Sheehy and Gianforte you start to wonder if Montana has any elected officials that aren't violent pieces of shit.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 16 points 5 days ago (2 children)

the brown-nosing senator joined in the fight to try to get PR.

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Yeah that's the best part. If you watch the vid, it's clear that the police did most of the damage, but the senator was right in the way "helping" trying to get the "good PR" and he caught all the blame. Absolutely beautiful turn of events!

Except for the marine.... Having your hands broken for telling the truth is brutal. No one wants to die for Israel's wars of aggression.

ACAB

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 5 days ago

Except for the marine.... Having your hands broken for telling the truth is brutal.

It was the fulfillment of his oath. Believe it or not, it's what he signed up for. To put himself in harm's way to defend the constitution against enemies foreign and domestic.

He didn't deserve to have it happen, and this doesn't excuse the senator or the police thugs. But he was willing to make that sacrifice and more.

At least, that's what our military should be. Not frothing at the mouth about some armageddon at the behest of a national sellout, grifter, and polyfelon.

Welcome to the Fascist States of America

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 11 points 5 days ago

I hope Brian McGinnis wins the North Carolina senate seat he is running for. Seems like the type of person who intends to do good.

His opposite number, Tim Sheehy, deserves a prison cell.

Average day in the Fascist States

Someone's getting sued...

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 5 days ago

That video is wild. Hr just keeps repeating his opposition
