The Pentagon and National Security Council significantly underestimated Iran’s willingness to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to US military strikes while planning the ongoing operation, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Donald Trump’s national security team failed to fully account for the potential consequences of what some officials have described as a worst-case scenario now facing the administration, the sources said.

While key officials from the Departments of Energy and Treasury were present for some of the official planning meetings about the operation before it started, sources said, the agency analysis and forecasts that would be integral elements of the decision-making process in past administrations were secondary considerations.

You are absolutely right! I failed to take into account the impact on the Strait of Hormuz, but I will be sure to do better in the future.

In the meantime, let's consider some options for tracking minorities and putting trans people in camps:

It amazes me how profoundly stupid these people are. This is almost too dumb to believe. The Strait of Hormuz risk has been talked about for decades, no one at the Pentagon or NSC should be surprised right now.

[–] xerxes@piefed.social 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Exactly. It's like they can't read. Everyone knew this shit was gonna happen.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

When we started seeing bullshit about aliens files maybe coming out, my first thought was the moon bears wkuk sketch. I was like okay, this isn't just a distraction from Epstein, we're about to invade Iran. I got an electrician to run a 60A 240V circuit to my garage and install a charger for me, and then I sold my Rav4 and bought an EV on 2/26. Bombs hit Iran on 2/28. I couldn't have timed that better with a fucking time machine lol.

They don’t read!! We read more than they do.

[–] ryrybang@lemmy.world 57 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Underestimated is a weird way to say didn't consider.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 2 days ago

They did consider. They considered, and saw it would be a net benefit for all major donors (oil companies get crazy oil profits again, rich billionaires get to buy up assets when the economy takes a fat shit here in about a month).

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The headline is technically correct. The ~~best~~ worst kind of correct.

Have you met my friend, Heffalump? He talks me down during these times of inconsistency...

[–] MajinBlayze@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

The instability is the point

[–] SarcasticMan@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago

They didn't underestimate shit, they straight up ignored it. Look, these white men are apex brains built on a warrior ethos, protein powder, and Rip Fuel.

How were they supposed to know these DEI generals who have been saying for 40 years that invading Iran is a shit idea weren't just making it up? They make shit up all the time, why wouldn't these DEI pussies do the same?

Also, who could have known these little brown fuckers could strategize on a white level of intelligence? I mean Venezuelans are brown, they rolled over them!

“Underestimated” means they spent any time estimating the outcome at all before trump decided to attack.

I sincerely doubt they did.

[–] TwilitSky@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I know elementary school kids who could tell you the Strait of Hormuz was going to be the first domino. Not a huge number but a bunch.

[–] Man_kind@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Because trump is an idiot, and only wants sycophants around him, and these people are all greedy people that are only there because they kiss trumps ass and don't care about democracy.

So, all he is getting is unqualified morons running everything.

Of course he doesnt realize fucking anything is going to happen. He's just high on his own supply of over-confidence.

If he had any advisors telling him attacking Iran was a bad idea, he'd just sack them for someone that will attack whoever he orders them to.

So, they're all incompetent.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There should be a name for a government run by Dunning-Kruger. Maybe dunningkrugertocracy?

Kakistocracy certainly covers it, but doesn't seem to really capture the essence of the problem: these people are so stupid and inept that they lack the capability to even realize that they are so terrible at it. It's Dunning-Kruger from the very top, and given the way they keep purging people, it's going to be Dunning-Kruger all the way to the very bottom if they have their way.

[–] Man_kind@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They are not being unsuccessful. Their measure is not how good your life is. Its how good theirs is. And they are robbing you blind. They can run the country and the world into the ground, doesnt matter.

These people would prefer to be a king in medieval times, than a middle class person today.

They have succeeded in acquiring power, and they spend all your tax dollars on whatever shit they want for themselves. They're having a blast.

The people getting fucked are those in the countries they are attacking, and those in the country they control, and the rest of the world too, due to oil prices etc...

But they dont care. They have so much money and can just steal more of your taxes, and accept more bribes from companies that want to take more of your worker rights away.

The people are suffering of dunning Kruger.

They think that believing and showing others in their echo chamber how stupid these people are is doing something. They think using the social media they control to make memes and jokes about them to themselves is doing something.

They think being morally correct, or knowing better policies for their country matters. They think its someone else's fault, and why wont someone else do something about it?

And they just watch all their rights and freedoms evaporate.

They wont even stop using the social media maga controls, or boycott amazon, or McDonald's or paramount, or any maga friendly company.

And they think their hands are clean because they voted for kamala and then sat back and watched as everything turned to shit, while all they do is blame others like boomers, who btw, protested the fuck out of everything and earned many rights you're supposed to have today.

Things are going to get a lot worse for everyone. And they think those in charge are stupid for it. They dont give a shot about you. They'll send you to die, or make you their slave. They dont care.

They are succeeding, the people are failing. They are losing to fucking idiots. Because they cant be bothered to fight back. All they can do is blame others and laugh at how inept their rulers are, as their rulers force them to live shittier and shittier lives. As they take from them, and do whatever the fuck they want.

It is immensely frustrating.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

while all they do is blame others like boomers, who btw, protested the fuck out of everything and earned many rights you’re supposed to have today.

That is something I've noticed gets completely lost in the "Boomers vs. Gen Y" narrative that is so very tiresome and myopic.

They keep acting like boomers were somehow the most regressive generation to ever come along and I am not sure I really see the evidence for it. What is true is that marketing ended up catering very much to boomers, given their size, but the very same thing happened with Gen Y (Gen X was skipped largely because we are a smaller group), not because of any inherent quality in either, but instead, because of their numbers.

I think this has led to some of their members in both groups being a bit more narcissistic (when it comes to demands that often involve sentences that contain the phrase "my generation") than generations that were not overly catered to.

But I see lots of footage and evidence that boomers really stuck their neck out to fight for things. Gen Y is now well into middle age and I don't see much evidence that they did so, as a group. Not that Gen X did, either, but I also don't see much intergenerational warfare coming from Gen X aimed at boomers, either.

[–] Man_kind@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Its social media that made them complacent and fed them a bunch of bullshit. The students and young people are usually the ones that stand up and fight. But they're all on social media doing social media things, and complaining that they cant biy homes, or that their rights are being g taken away and they're ruled by a tyrant, but they aren't doing anything. They're just on social media.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This circle jerk couldn't find their own assholes with two hands and a flashlight.

They are ridiculously ill-equipped for the job and suffer Dunning-Kruger besides, so they have no idea how bad they are at it....

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago

no, they are incredibly successful, they have all the power, spend tax payer dollars on themselves and making lots of money.

this speaks volumes of democracy itself and how easily voters are manipulated against their own interests to help psychopaths.

all they had to do is convince a bunch of fools by telling them easily verifiable lies.

My failure lies in continually underestimating the stupidity of voters, see 3,4 and 5 below.

These are Cipolla's five fundamental laws of stupidity:

  1. Always and inevitably, everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.

  2. The probability that a certain person (will) be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

  3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.

  4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places, and under any circumstances, to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

  5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

[–] Dotcom@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The fact that they did any estimation at all is astounding.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Hey man! They had the concepts of an estimation. What more do you want before sending kids into the meat grinder?

[–] Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trump will have been given 3 folders marked "Plan A", "Plan B" and "Plan C" and instead of reading them just pointed at one of them.

I can 100% guarantee that any part of a plan suggesting Iran would be a significant adversary who could halt the global economy would have been suppressed

(nope, I didn't find a smaller one)

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Not a lot else they can do to respond. Seemed likely to me.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

The dumbshits didn't estimate at all.
