news
Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Or vote for political parties that will take away your rights.
“Muh gender ideology” MFs when they realize a lot of trans people are their fellow Republicans in the south.
How TF is being trans a political opinion when that “opinion” is held by Republicans too?!
This is going to be one of the few things to move the needle forward, point out lgbt chuds, isn’t it?
That idpol for you. If one party is against it, the other party can choose to be fore it and make it a fight. Or not. Since in the US only one party has convictions, the fights are mostly fake and that's why it all feels hollow, one side has genuine hate and the other has hollow, brittle support.
Im not saying it is, cause it shouldnt be. Its not an issue exclusive to one country, either.
I'm not religious but there's plenty of trans inclusive denominations in Christianity (Quakers, Uniting, Lutheran).
There are trans inclusive Rabbis and Synagogues, Imams and mosques etc.
Yes, you are correct. I am sorry that my one line of snark lacked context.
She should not go to a church that treats her like that then.
Was Jesus, or any of the people he baptized, wearing trousers? Checkmate English Christians.
‘When I asked them why, they told me I was sinning as a trans woman and because I was living in sin with my partner.’
Acts 2:38 says baptism is specifically for sinners. "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Even under their own bigoted terf island rules it's nonsense. I really fucking hate how lgtbq people existing is somehow the violation that completely overruled all other stuff from the Bible. There are like two verses saying don't be gay but hundreds of verses saying rich people are all going to hell. I fucking hate it. It's always the one thing that bigoted Christians will triangulate on. You can be an alcoholic, a racist, a con artist, a cheater, doesn't matter. These churches will say you can work through it. But if you're queer? Just a complete fuck you. Immediate hatred.
To the average Christian, the Bible is just “gay bad, woman bad, non-believer bad!” and absolutely nothing else.
Like is it really so much to ask for some consistency? I've literally never seen or heard of a Christian group protesting outside of a tattoo parlor, Leviticus 19:28 “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord."
And I've never seen Christians protest outside of a red lobster, Leviticus 11:10 "and all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you" And yet despite those things being very clear in their book they'd rather focus on queer people simply existing.
Oh but what a coincidence, reactionary Christians always wanna use their book to enforce the same white supremacist patriarchal stuff they were going to do anyway but ignoring all the inconvient stuff?
The lack of consistency between christians actions and the book they claim to believe in is rly the best demonstration of how ideas dont control the world. Exodus 20:25-26 is also fun
25And if you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones; for if you wield your tool upon it you profane it.
26And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.'
No one:
What is a man?
Chuds:
A man wears trousers and has a beard
Dracula:
A miserable little pile of secrets
"transwoman" is not a good term. please just say trans woman
The evil bigot death cult won't let me participate in their death cult rituals because they're too bigoted
CHUDs: “Those wokes refuse to learn our objectively superior point of view! What’s wrong with them!”
One of us: “Ok fine, I’ll join and learn more about your way of life…”
CHUDs: “Fuck you! I won’t even meet you halfway!”
Ok guys, I think the CHUDs have abandoned the skeptic community. Time to bring back the late 2000s.
I misread this as the trans woman refusing to take part in the baptism unless they met her demands.
Instead it was her being discriminated against. Unfortunate.
I could say you shouldn't need some ritual or another person who has no bearing on your life for approval as a child of the universe. Have your partner baptize you if you feel you need ritualistic acceptance to story book characters.
would approve.
you realize you're telling someone who was discriminated against that they shouldn't have tried to be part of the group in the first place? true or false, the issue is the discrimination. have you lost the plot or you just being pedantic for fun?
Thank you for the feedback.
Should she have tried in the first place? Yes she thought it was welcoming. She was told assumed otherwise, which can be devastating in itself. Should churches discriminate? No absolutely not. It is against Christian beliefs and the teachings of Christ. Organized religion sucks. Especially when it comes to it's dogma which is the opposite of
I am not dismissive of the discrimination, but the institution of the church in the practice of one's religion or spirituality.
She was discriminated against in an institution whose central belief system is rooted in patriarchal discrimination, dominance, and control. She gives, but does not recieve. Told she is loved, but starved of the affection, belonging and seen as lesser and an afront to god lest she portray herself as something she is not (aka lie to conform - very Christian /s) An abusive, hypocritical relationship. That takes some strength to walk away from.
If she wants to stay, knowing what they think of her, and baptism is significant to her, then she doesn't need a discimatory cloth to do this ritual. She and her partner can do it at home, or go to one that isn't discrimatory.
In the book of the death cult:
Zombie Jesus said in Matthew 6:4-6
4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
5 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
6 But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.…
She doesn't need this jerk's approval to be accepted by her God. She doesn't need that church. No one needs it. I get there is a sense of community and support in them. Being rejected the ritual of baptism is like being denied full inclusion.
My intention was to say screw that jerk, that organization, and God doesn't mind if you do rituals in pivate and she has a nice partner to baptize and witness her. There are other more welcoming places too.
The church is part of the Evangelical Alliance UK. I would say her faith needs are different than Evangelical Christianity, which discriminates against transgender people.
CW transphobia - They have a presser urging their members to make public comments allowing for discrimination and to frustrate people changing their gender with beauracacy in reguards to changes in the gender it's coached in deceptive concern language.
Perhaps I am old and tired of [Discimation Based Book club Discriminates]. Just so not shocked anymore.
There are some orgs to connect to that might be able to help match her up with an affirming church.
So mote it be.
