With boredom comes dedication and commitment. I recommend The Count of Monte Cristo. Long but very captivating.

Yesss this is so good.
One of my top 5s for sure - maybe even #1. But it’s a long read not suitable for first time/new readers (not saying OP is or isn’t - just don’t know anything about them, and I wouldn’t recommend the count to, say, my teenage daughter who doesn’t read much).
But ya - if you’re up for it OP, this is a masterpiece of a book.
If you want something fast paced, recent, and ok with scifi, I suggest Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It’s a quick and fun read, I highly enjoyed it. The movie just came out, so you can watch that then compare the two. So far, folks have said it’s a good adaptation, I am seeing it tomorrow.
That would take a fair bit of time out of your boredom.
Agreed. Great for literally anybody of any tastes. Easy read that’s fun. Bonus is the audiobook is very good as well.
Also going tomorrow! Just finished reading it a few weeks ago. It wasn't a 5/5 for me but I think it will make a good movie, I'm excited.
That is one I was going recommend. Also The Martain is also good.
Another book recommendation is Children of Time by Andrew Tchaikovskuly. The whole series is pretty good. Currently reading the 4th book in that series that just came out.
If you want something a bit more humourous:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Guards! Guards! - Terry Pratchett
Dune by Frank Herbert
The Illuminatus Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion by the recently departed Dan Simmons
Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
Kind of like Ocean’s 11 in a fantasy setting with some of the best snarky dialogue I have ever read.
This is both wonderful and terrible advice. I just want the next book. I don't think it's ever going to happen.
Same. Been waiting for years. I have faith it will happen!
I want to believe.
I'm actually not even mad on this one. The books are standalone enough that I won't feel slighted if the next one never comes out.
The Blade Itself. Joe Abercrombie has ruined the entire fantasy genre for me… nothing can compare.
The entire First Law trilogy and the additional books.
I’ll throw some of my favorites on the pile in addition to two others I’ve already seen and replied to (Hail Mary and count of monte cristo). Warning - all over the spectrum here
- lord of the rings
- Frankenstein - much better than I thought it would be
- the picture of Dorian Grey - Lord Henry might be the best villain in any book. He’s so scandalous you can’t help but love his ridiculousness.
- the road to tender hearts
- a man called ove
- red rising series
- titan (biography on rockerfeller, fascinating but long)
- the intelligent investor
I have plenty more if you want me to keep going. If any one of those interests you at all, I’m positive you’ll enjoy reading from that list.
Frankenstein seconded, more than you might expect from the film versions.
Unless you watch the recent Del Torro adaptation which is great.
Old Man's War - by John Scalzi.
It's such a fun and good written sci-fi space story.
Nation by Terry Pratchett. Make sure you have tissues.
Horace McCoy - They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
It's a quick read, and it hits like a bullet.
11/22/63
In my top 5 books ive read.
Grapes of wrath
1984
The martian
Brave new world
Discworld.
Try follow the reading order suggested. I would start with the city watch or witches series.
These are my favorites from each category:
Classic: The Odyssey, Homer
Fantasy: Here There be Dragons, James Owen
Horror: The Fall of House Usher, E.A. Poe (short story)
SciFi: Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
Science: Cosmic Querries, Neil deGrasse Tyson
Politics: A Second Treatise of Government, John Locke
Philosophy: Phaedo, Plato
Poetry: Songs of Innocence and Experience, William Blake
Play: A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare
Historical Fiction: Little House on the Prarie, Laura Ingals Wilder
Cooking: The Classic of Tea, Lu Yu
Religion: The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis
Romance: idk havent read one I like yet
The Remaining by DJ Molles. It's the first book in one of my favorite series. The first series has 6 books, there is a follow on series with 6 books, and there are 4 stand alone novels and a prequel following that. Awesome concept with realistic, flawed characters and lots of gruesome post-apocalyptic action. chef kiss
I mean if you have not read it do the first wheel of time.
or any book by Christopher Moore really.. https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/16218.Christopher_Moore
To Kill a Mockingbird. Very entertaining, easy and quick read.
Or Brave New World or 1984 or Fahrenheit 451. Very topical.
The Victorian Internet by Tom Standage.
Great book. It’s about the story of the invention and proliferation of the telegraph.
Cloud Atlas (don't watch the movie it's a train wreck)
“Zombie Fairy Tales” by Kevin Richey
ISBN-13: 9781494298043
Moonbound by Robin Sloan, My favorite book of 2025, maybe my favorite SciFi of all time
Authenticity by Deirdre Madden
High Fidelity
After being dumped, the owner of a record store details his top 5 breakups of all-time.
Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man
All Systems Red by Martha Wells. A novella at only 160 pages though.
One of the most-important books for anyone to read, if they want their life to be managed into being better than what "fate" would make it:
Logan, King, & Dr. Fischer-Wright's "Tribal Leadership" on the 5 social-process levels, & how to get people to climb up into a healthier one, if they're ready to do that..
the oversimplified TED Talk about the meanings they discovered in their years of research - https://www.ted.com/talks/david_logan_tribal_leadership
The actual book: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/tribal-leadership-revised-edition
I'd require this of all highschool graduates, for them to be eligible for their diploma: it'd fundamentally improve society profoundly, to make these understandings normal.

Curious why the downvotes.
Probably because the "5 social-process levels" sounds like some culty pseudoscience mumbo jumbo. There are a ton of snake oil books claiming "if you do what I say you'll solve all your problems and the world's too." There is no simple hidden trick to solving all the world's problems.
